Maldives: diving paradise (part 1)
The Maldives Islands are synonymous of diving. Its capricious geography consists of over 1,200 small coral islands. Not all are counted and some emerge or disappear, with earthquakes of the sea. The Maldives offer an changing paradise for the professional diver and the tourists for the first time
Grouped into 25 atolls, only 200 islands are habited, 65 are devoted only to tourism. Most of the territory of Maldives is water. The soil is so scarce, that the capital, Mali, occupies an island, and another international airport. Some of the islands are so small that only houses a hotel. Without land to farm, Maldivians have been delivered to the sea.
The Maldives is the lowest country on the planet. Its maximum height is five feet, and the average is one. The low height of the islands and coral reefs, the cornerstone of the Maldives economy played a role in the tragedy of December 26, 2004, during the tsunami.
The absence of continental shelf, allowed waves were not pushed upward, and passed just above the ground. Meanwhile, corals acted as a filter, like a giant strainer stripped of energy waves. Although the Maldives were very close to the epicenter of the tsunami, the death toll was much lower than in countries further afield.

The Maldives is a tropical nation in the Indian Ocean composed of 26 coral atolls, which are made up of hundreds of islands. It’s known for its beaches, blue lagoons and extensive reefs. The capital, Malé, has a busy fish market, restaurants and shops on Majeedhee Magu and 17th-century Hukuru Miskiy (also known as Old Friday Mosque) made of coral stone. More info:

TOP 10 Best Maldives Resorts ~ Majestic Islands ~ HD Video
Music: Svadisthana (Dance Mix) by Dhruva Aliman - ...The most romantic hotels in the Maldives including the best for over water villas, private plunge pools, open-air cinemas, Michelin-starred restaurants, beachfront dining and spectacular diving facilities. ------Soneva Fushi hotel, Maldives ------The motto here is “no news, no shoes” and, true to their word, guests’ footwear is confiscated on the traditional dhoni boat transfer from Malé. The 65 villas made from natural materials are sandwiched between jungle and beach. Fun extras include an open-air cinema on the beach, planetarium, treetop yoga, a Mr or Mrs Friday (aka personal butler) assigned to each villa. There's an excellent choice of dining options, including Mihiree Mitha, which serves wonderfully fresh sushi, and By The Beach, for Korean-inspired cuisine by candlelight, both supplied by the island’s vegetable and herb gardens.
Cocoa Island by COMO
Maafushi, Maldives
This little slice of tropical heaven offers a total escape from everyday life. One of the smallest, most stylish resorts in the Indian Ocean has just 33 thatched villas inspired by dhonis with large, secluded decks for lounging on or slipping into the lagoon. Holistic, Asian-inspired treatments are offered in the COMO Shambhala Retreat, which has an open-air yoga pavilion and four treatments rooms, including one for couples. There’s a main restaurant, Ufaa, but guests tend to hide away in their villa or opt for private dining on the beach.
Cheval Blanc Randheli hotel,
Noonu, Maldives
Cheval Blanc Randheli is a 40-minute ride from Malé on the resort’s private seaplane and has a touch of old-school glamour about it. There are 45 villas, some on a private man-made island, some overwater with a private jetty and infinity pool and lots of sumptuous extras including complimentary massages to relieve jet-lag, toiletries created exclusively for the resort by Dior, and four restaurants overseen by Yannick Alléno, three-Michelin-starred chef. A Guerlain spa on its own island got the Royal seal of approval – the resort is where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge chose to check in on their first holiday sans George.
The Four Seasons Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru
Maldives
The more remote of the Four Seasons’ two Maldives properties lies in the Baa Atoll and has 102 thatched sunrise or sunset beach and water villas edging the large lagoon. Known for its fantastic service, treats here include castaway picnics on deserted islands, tantric massages for two to awaken “kundalini energy” and dining on a private platform in the middle of a lagoon. There’s also the chance to visit virgin dive sites and uninhabited islands aboard luxury liveaboard The Four Seasons Explorer, a sleek three-deck catamaran. The land-based villas feel the most authentic and private.
Mirihi Island Resort
Mandhoo, Maldives
An island retreat without the bravado associated with many of the extravagant new Maldivian resorts, Mirihi maintains a focus on its beautiful surroundings and prides itself on having one of the most fascinating house reefs in the Maldives – expect to see reef sharks, manta rays and green turtles. Opt for a water villa and the positioning is impressive. The shower room has full slide-away doors, opening up views to a vast expanse of Indian Ocean, and a private outdoor deck with direct access to the sea. here are four restaurants; each embodies a different ambience, yet taste and presentation prevail thanks to zealous head-chef, Felix.
Conrad Maldives Rangali Island
Maldives
Despite being situated 30 minute sea plane ride from Male, the resort feels wonderfully remote. There are long stretches of sandy beach where, even in high season, you might not glimpse anybody else. For diving and snorkeling enthusiasts, large coral reefs full of glittering fish are just a short boat ride away. Each villa has been carefully designed for maximum privacy, with thoughtful touches such as candles in the bathroom. There is a wide range of activities on offer, from pedalo excursions to honeymooners’ favorite 'The Sandbar Picnic' – a day-trip on a yacht, with a drop-off on a deserted island where you can enjoy a romantic meal on the beach.
Jumeirah Vittaveli, Maldives
Vittaveli is a 20-minute motorized catamaran ride from Male’s airport island. There is an eclectic mix of architectural styles throughout the resort - most striking is the modernist Samsara restaurant with its dramatically angled roof and glass walls. The standard beach villas are spacious, with a generous bathroom area that extends to an open-air shower, l-shaped swimming pool and a small private garden with day bed and swing. Romantics can retreat to one of the seven humongous ocean suites that are accessible only by boat. Facilities on the island include an Asian-inspired spa, yoga classes, a gym, and an excellent water-sports center that makes good use of a thriving house reef.
Trip to Male City - shopping and sightseeing - Maldives- North Male Atoll - Kaafu Atoll
#justBeautifulMaldives I have been in Male in March.
The capital of the Maldives connects skyscrapers with narrow streets that are surrounded by river banks. Shoppers will be drawn to the local markets in Male with their fresh produce, as well as to the Chaandanee Magu shopping street with a variety of souvenirs such as hand-carved wooden dhoni or small replicas of boats on the water. The Friday mosque with its golden dome sits enthroned above the landscape and the rich underwater world of the atolls captivates snorkelers and divers from all over the world.

Magic in the Maldives | Scuba Diving with Blue O Two | Best of the Maldives
When you book yourself onto a dive holiday with an itinerary named ‘Pelagic Encounters’, you start dreaming of the numerous sightings of sharks and manta you will see - that’s what we did anyway.
However, you always have that little niggle in the back of your mind of “will they turn up”? “Will we get lucky”? After all, you’d hate to spend a load of cash on a trip to be disappointed!
We had those very questions ringing around in our heads before we departed for our most recent trip to the Maldives to spend on a week on the Blue Voyager - part of the Blue O Two fleet, as there is just no way of determining what the wonderful marine life of the Indian Ocean will do?!
Thankfully, as you can see from the video we had no need to be concerned at all, as we were spoilt absolutely rotten day after day!
Despite the continued reminder to ‘keep our expectations low’ that our Cruise Director resonated at the end of every dive brief, we were blown away with the sightings of large pelagics almost every time we jumped in the water.
Even day one - generally the day where you expect the least amount of action to take place, no? I mean, surely it would make sense to save all the best stuff till the end of the week so you go out on a high? No?
Absolutely not - day one was the day that everyone on that dive safari boat were left utterly speechless with a 60 min show worthy of a place on a Blue Planet documentary! Over 30 sharks circling in the current with us as the very grateful audience - to say we were stunned is one thing, but for the dive guides to profess that they had never seen anything like it before made it all the more special.
The main ingredients of the week were manta rays, sharks of all different variety, with the cherry on the top being two glorious whale sharks while were in the waters of Ari Atoll.
The fish amongst the reefs were in plentiful supply, and we were even treated to a few leaf fish, and ghost-pipe fish.
Without a doubt, we experienced some of the best diving we have ever done. The Magical Maldives delivered a first class ‘Pelagic Encounter’, and one that is going to be very hard to beat!
Keep an eye out for our next video from our second week in the Maldives, where we enter the enchanting world of the Maldives from a ‘Macro’ perspective!
