This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Earth is an oceanic planet, and its seabeds remain largely unexplored. Andrew Wheeler and his team use ROVs to collect core samples from the deep ocean, their layers revealing Earth's geological history. Andrew tells the story a grain of sand taken from the deep ocean, and how it has changed our understanding of how Ireland's landscape was shaped two million years ago.
Andrew Wheeler is a marine geologist and ocean explorer. He has led many deep-water surveys mapping and sampling the seabed. Andrew's studies have taken him from the Arctic to sub-tropical Pacific, from mid-ocean ridges to shallow shelf, and he is fascinated by the geology of cold-water coral reefs.

The story of Tilikum, a captive killer whale that has taken the lives of several people, underscores problems within the sea-park industry, man's relationship to nature, and how little has been learned about these highly intelligent mammals.
The documentary concerns the captivity of Tilikum, an orca involved in the deaths of three people, and the consequences of keeping orcas in captivity. The coverage of Tilikum includes his capture in 1983 off the coast of Iceland and his purported harassment by fellow captive orcas at Sealand of the Pacific. Cowperthwaite argues these incidents contributed to the orca's aggression.
The film includes a testimonial from Lori Marino, director of science with the Nonhuman Rights Project. Cowperthwaite also focuses on SeaWorld's claims that lifespans of orcas in captivity are comparable to those in the wild, typically 30 years for males and 50 years for females, a claim the film argues is false.[8] Other people interviewed include former SeaWorld trainers, such as John Hargrove, who describe their experiences with Tilikum and other captive whales.
The documentary reports that the whales have experienced extreme stress when their offspring were captured in the wild or when separated after breeding at water parks. The film features footage of attacks on trainers by Tilikum and other captive whales as well as interviews with witnesses.

ans World Airlines Flight 800 (TWA 800) was a Boeing 747-100 that exploded and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near East Moriches, New York, on July 17, 1996, at about 8:31 p.m. EDT, 12 minutes after takeoff from John F. Kennedy International Airport on a scheduled international passenger flight to Rome, with a stopover in Paris. All 230 people on board died in the crash; it is the third-deadliest aviation accident in U.S. history. Accident investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) traveled to the scene, arriving the following morning.313 amid speculation that a terrorist attack was the cause of the crash.Consequently, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and New York Police Department (FBI-NYPD) Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) initiated a parallel criminal investigation.Sixteen months later, the JTTF announced that no evidence of a criminal act had been found and closed its active investigation.
The four-year NTSB investigation concluded with the approval of the Aircraft Accident Report on August 23, 2000, ending the most extensive, complex, and costly air disaster investigation in U.S. history to that time.The report's conclusion was that the probable cause of the accident was explosion of flammable fuel vapors in the center fuel tank. Although it could not be determined with certainty, the likely ignition source was a short circuit.xvi Problems with the aircraft's wiring were found, including evidence of arcing in the Fuel Quantity Indication System (FQIS) wiring that enters the tank. The FQIS on Flight 800 is known to have been malfunctioning; the captain remarked on what he called crazy readings from the system approximately two minutes and thirty seconds before the aircraft exploded. As a result of the investigation, new requirements were developed for aircraft to prevent future fuel tank explosions.

The NTSB was notified about 8:50 p.m. the day of the accident; a full go team was assembled in Washington, D.C. and arrived on scene early the next morning.313 Meanwhile, initial witness descriptions led many to believe the cause of the crash was a bomb or surface-to-air missile attack.The NTSB does not investigate criminal activity. The Attorney General is empowered to declare an investigation to be linked to a criminal act, and require the NTSB to relinquish control of the investigation to the FBI. In the case of TWA 800, the FBI initiated a parallel criminal investigation alongside the NTSB's accident investigation

Captain Karl von Schenk of the Kaiser's Navy is a stereotypical German nobleman - supremely self-confident, touchy about the divisions of class and any infringement on his place. He thinks he is handsome, has a suitably manly physique, an excellent singing voice, and a facility with writing. His wartime service related in his diary is a series of triumphs over harrowing circumstances, bringing his boat back in spite of the best efforts of the Royal Navy to stop him.
His one vulnerability is a young lady he meets on leave in Bruges, Belgium. Although she is the trophy girlfriend of a German colonel who could cause him much harm if he were to find out, von Schenk pursues his Zoe with Teutonic straightforwardness. And both he and the reader are entirely blind-sided by the unexpected thunderclap that puts an end to the sweet affair.
Stephen King-Hall, a Royal Navy officer during the war and writing as Etienne, penned this book as if he had simply discovered it on a surrendered submarine. In fact, some editions of the book list the author as anonymous. King-Hall's knowlege of naval affairs lend authority to this yarn of men that go to the sea in ships that sink... on purpose. This recording contains the occasional sound of the passing of automobiles. I like to imagine that they are a bustling city, just outside Borges' apartment window, on a temperate afternoon, while he narrates his most recently completed work to a group of a like-minded bibliophiles in some mid 20th century Buenos Aires, caught in amber.
It appears, or at least according to my limited research it appears, that this is the first narration of Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius in English. I did find versions in French and Spanish.
I must confess, due to the author's scrupulous preservation of detail, that in the ante-penultimate (third to las†) paragraph of the story, I pronounced the homonym 'minute' as if it were in reference to time, when in fact in was meant to be pronounced in relation to size. A simple yet ghastly oversight.
Lastly, I might add, somewhat poetically, in the spirit of the last paragraph before the postscript (which was intended to be anachronistic, set seven years into the then future), which went: Things become duplicated in Tlön; they also tend to become effaced and lose their details when they are forgotten. A classic example is the doorway which survived so long as it was visited by a beggar and disappeared at his death. At times some birds, a horse, have saved the ruins of an amphitheater. Is that by remembering and narrating this story, I hope, in some small way, to preserve the architecture of one of the greatest literary metagrobologists to ever grace a pen.

Plus, a story like this, that goes this long, takes a certain contemplative demeanor. It's a moment to pause and reflect in life, maybe while doing something tedious, like paying bills or organizing a file cabinet.

Tras el declive de Tiahuanaco y Huari o Wari volvieron los Estados Regionales al Antiguo Perú. Algunos de estos pequeños reinos fueron la Cultura Sicán o Lambayeque, la Cultura Ichma, la Cultura Chincha, o la amazónica Cultura Chachapollas, famosa por su magnífica ciudad de Kuélap o el Gran Pajatén. Pero sin duda el gran reino de la época fue Chimor, o Reino Chimú. Su fundador fue Tacaynamo y su capital fue Chan Chan, la mayor ciudad de adobe del mundo.
Para el año 1200 nació el curacazgo de Cuzco con Manco Cápac, que fue el primer estadio de la Civilización Inca. Estos se tuvieron que enfrentar a muchas poblaciones locales hasta que Viracocha, líder inca, decidió huir ante la invasión de los chancas. Fue su hijo Pachacútec quien les venció y logró el puesto de sapa inca, convirtiendo a los incas cuzqueños en un imperio llamado Tahuantinsuyo.
Este Imperio apenas tuvo un siglo para crecer. Con Túpac Yupanqui se expandieron una barbaridad territorialmente, y mientras fueron sometiendo al resto de reinos vecinos fueron asimilando muchas de sus costumbres además de imponer las suyas: lengua, religión y organización politico-económica. Quizás su mayor obra fue la ciudad de Machu Picchu, situada en el valle sagrado del Urubamba.
El crecimiento del imperio se vio interrumpido cuando llegó a la zona el conquistador Francisco Pizarro, quienes lograron capturar al inca Atahualpa después de la guerra civil contra su hermano Huáscar. Todo acabó con la conquista de Cuzco y tiempo después con la destrucción del Neo-Imperio Inca de Vilcabamba.

ANTIGUO EGIPTO 2: El Reino Antiguo y las pirámides de Guiza
El Reino Antiguo egipcio abarca las dinastías tercera, cuarta, quinta y sexta. En ellas, los faraones comienzan a construir grandes obras arquitectónicas conocidas como pirámides, montañas de piedra que servirían como sus tumbas. Las más famosas, las de la meseta de Guiza, cerca de el actual El Cairo, tienen unos 5000 años de antigüedad, y fueron construidas por los faraones Keops, Kefrén y Micerino.
La sociedad fue evolucionando, se estratificó y los trabajos se especializaron. Había escribas, jueces, arquitectos, obreros, comerciantes, nomarcas y hasta médicos. Uno de estos últimos que alcanzó gran popularidad fue Imhotep, que llegó a ser el chaty, o Gran Visir, del faraón Zoser. Juntos construyeron la Pirámide Escalonada que daría lugar al concepto de pirámide que llevarían a cabo faraones posteriores.

Con Octavio Augusto nació el Imperio Romano. Con él, la dinastía Julio-Claudia se hace con el poder absoluto de Roma, y comienza una expansión por diversos territorios, como Hispania, Retia, Nórica, Dalmacia, Panonia... Sus sucesores Tiberio, Calígula, Claudio y Nerón agrandarían el territorio romano por Galia, Germania y hasta Britania, combatiendo en un sin fin de guerras.
El reinado del último emperador de esta dinastía, Nerón, estaba bastante de la olla, y tras supuestamente incendiar Roma mientras tocaba la lira acabó generando tal caos que comenzó una guerra civil en el año 68, el año de los cuatro emperadores. Este conflicto acabó con la dinastía Flavia tomando el poder.
Sus tres emperadores, Vespasiano, Tito y Domiciano, se enfrentaron a problemas como la 1ª Guerra Judeo-Romana, la erupción del monte Vesubio en el 79 d.C. y algunos incendios de la capital romana. La dinastía al final cayó debido a Domiciano, que al igual que Nerón también estaba un poco loco.
