Athens Riviera, Greece | top attractions - paradise coast of the greek Capital
The southern suburbs of Athens invite you to travel to the big blue – here the summer never ends
A few kilometres outside Athens, the urban landscape gives way to a unique seaside resort. This gorgeous stretch of coastline with its green-blue water, organised beaches and rocky coves is teeming with five-star resorts, spas, esplanades, marinas, windsurfing and sailing. Combined with the ideal climate, the Athens Riviera makes you feel as if you’re on an endless summer holiday.
Your excursion to the southern suburbs begins from Faliro and reaches Sounion. The tram connects Athens – from Syntagma Square – with the southern suburbs, and is a leisurely way to get to the coast. Route T3, which reaches from Faliro until Voula, is the most enjoyable way for you to get to know the coastline. Along the way, you’ll encounter seaside neighbourhoods and destinations full of temptations for you to stop and check out: Alimos, Glyfada, Voula, Vouliagmeni, Varkiza, Lagonissi, Saronida, Anavyssos are all perfect for swimming or a stroll, with shopping, dining and more.
In this corner of Athens you’ll find organised, emerald water beaches, and rocky coves perfect for a swim. There is certainly no shortage of inviting sand or Blue Flag awards on stretches of coast like Eden Beach at Mavro Lithari, the beaches at Anavyssos, Varkiza, Asteras Vouliagmenis and many more. Five-star resorts with spas, esplanades, palm trees, sea sports, sailing and even golf at the modern Glyfada Golf Club await you. The beat goes on at numerous beach bars and exclusive nightclubs where you will dance until dawn, barefoot on the sand. Here the sun shines bright and the laughter rings out loud all year round.
If you are a sailing enthusiast, the Athens Riviera has many marinas from which you can set sail for beaches and villages in the Peloponnese (Loutra Oraias Elenis, Korfo, Epidaurus), Sounion – cruising by Athens’ cosmopolitan beaches – as well as the islands near Athens, in the Saronic Gulf. Fully-organised marinas in the area can be found in Flisvos, at Faliro-SEF, in Alimos, Glyfada and Vouliagmeni.
On the tip of this unique coastline, you’ll find Cape Sounion, where you’ll admire the Temple of Poseidon – one of the most significant monuments of Ancient Greece, and one of the most important attractions in Athens.
And finally, when night falls, you’ll enjoy the coast’s nightlife: in Alimos, Glyfada, Vouliagmeni and Varkiza the beach bars are filled with people enjoying their cocktails, dancing until dawn and making summer memories. Welcome to the Athens Riviera, where summer never ends.
The Most Popular Attractions in the Athens Riviera
1. Temple of Poseidon
A visit to Sounion is more than just an excursion, it is an ethereal journey, especially when there is the full moon. When you get to the Temple of Poseidon, situated at the top of the cliff at Cape Sounion, you leave the crowds behind and become one with the gods. Feel the energy of this landscape, drenched in the same light as in ancient times. A place of myths and legends: this is where Aegeus, king of Athens, jumped to his death, mistakenly thinking that he’d lost Theseus, his only son, to the Minotaur in the labyrinth. And here, at Attica’s southernmost tip, the Doric Temple of Poseidon was built, standing proudly. Sounion is the first and last sight for mariners and it is without doubt a vision that will stay with you forever.
2. Lavrio
This port is unlike any other. Lavrio has a 4,000-year-old mining history. Discover the 19th-century mining works and the ancient silver-mining tunnels. Admire the industrial complex of the former Compagnie Française des Mines. On the way to Sounion, near the village of Kamariza, you’ll encounter ‘chaos’, an impressive geological phenomenon of vertical cliffs in shades of grey and orange, with a depth of 55m.
3. Limanakia Vouliagmenis
Find your own private limanaki (cove) and dive off the rocks into the crystal-clear water.
4. Lake Vouliagmeni
A miracle of nature: emerald waters that remain at a temperature between 20 and 29 degrees Celsius, embraced by red rocks. These natural hot springs with labyrinthine underwater caves were formed by the precipitation in what was once, in prehistoric times, a huge cave. It has been declared a natural monument and belongs to the pan-European network of protected Natura 2000 areas.
5. Suburban beaches
The star beach of the Athens Riviera is the sophisticated Asteras Vouliagmenis, with its luxury sun beds, volleyball courts and myriad dining options. Since 1959, it has been considered the beach to see and be seen on. Other great beaches spanning the coast are Loubarda, Agia Marina, Iliopoulos, Mavro Lithari, Eden and Saronida.

Agios Nikolaos, Chalkidiki
Agios Nikolaos, Sithonia
Agios Nikolaos is a large municipality with 3,000 residents and 12 settlements.
The more famous of these villages are: Agios Nikolaos, Ormos Panagias and Vourvourou
There are about 30 km of adjoining coast and a small archipelago consisting of four islands, most famous of which is Diaporos.
The village of Agios Nikolaos is located about 100 km from Thessaloniki in the beginning of the Sithonia peninsula and 4 km from the sea. The old farmhouses with gray tiles of years are in harmony with the new modern buildings. The village has many permanent residents and is full of life. It was developed as an administrative and economic center for the surrounding area. Tourism isn’t developed due to its remoteness from the coast, but seasonal workers can find cheap accommodation here.
The village of OrmosPanagias is very small, but very popular, with charm and atmosphere.
It is the port of Agios Nikolaos. Here you can anchor your boat or yacht. Cruise ships for day trips to Mount Athos as well as boats for sea trips and touring of the island Diaporos depart and return to OrmosPanagias. At the port can be seen fishing boats and on the shore are kiosks selling fresh fish. The bay is small but has a sandy beach. The tables of the taverns are on the sand next to the gentle lapping of the waves with the boat filled harbor in front of you. In the distance the big yacht harbor can be seen. It is a 5 minute walk east to the large beach. In the other direction is the Lagonissi bay, a fantastic place for sunbathing. The warm sand and emerald waters are expecting you. Do not miss them! The memory remains forever.
The village of Vourvorou is a place to rest. It is supposedly a village, but is not quite like one. There is no actual center, shops and entertainment venues. There is a street parallel to the sea, from which start asphalt paths leading to yet more places of accommodation - hotels or guest houses. Large plots of beachfront share fences and do not allow easy access to the sea. At the end of the villagehowever is located the Karidi beach where nature has painted a picture difficult to describe with words. Go and see this beach!
The bay of Vourvourouhas a narrow sandy beach and during the season there are too many anchored boats. There's a reason for this. Vourvourou is a place where lovers of sea adventures rest after their sea tours. The small Vurvurouarchipelago with center islandDiaporos is special and the reason for people to come here for vacation, to rent an apartment, house or house for the whole season or buy property for investment purposes.
Diaporos island has an area of about three square kilometers and coastline where nature has shaped many blue lagoons with warm fine sand. It is located towards the coast as a breakwater for Vourvourou. Distance to the island is about 250 meters and it is easy to overcome, even with swimming. The island has a road network connecting the hotels and other places of accommodation, but many lagoons are accessible only from the sea or on foot from the island. Even if you don’t stay in Vourvourou, make a daily excursion there by boat and make nice memories for a lifetime. If you do you are a fan of motor boats or have one, go to Vourvourouand Diaporos and - adventures await you!

Scuba Diving St. Maarten - Wreck Dive Porpoise
Scuba Diving in Sint Maarten / Saint Martin with Ocean Explorers Dive Center ( Explorer's Daily Log - Saturday, November 07, 2015 - Week 45 ) divesxm.com
The PORPOISE is an 100' almost completely intact steel tug boat wreck that was sunk on purpose in October of 2003. This hard structure lays with a starboard list in about 90 feet and rises up to about 60 feet of water. Porpoise is a great wreck dive site that drawn marine life like a magnet... in the sand you can often see huge Southern Stingrays, Garden Eels, Peacock Flounder and more..... Below deck divers can see the machinery, Spine Lobsters, Spotted Morays and Squirrelfish... The pilot house is in good conditions great for underwater pictures... Look out for the Big Barracuda if she is not on the pilot house look around she must be chasing some school of fish around the wreck :) :) :)

Scuba diving inside the Spiegel Grove shipwreck
This was my first dive on the SG but my buddy Jason has been diving this wreck for years so he gave me a great tour. It was December of '13 and back home there was ice on all the lakes so it was really nice diving without a drysuit. I must admit though, having done hundreds of dives in my drysuit, it wasn't easy getting used to diving without one :)
