Dixie Divers Scuba Diving Channel Presents : Diving Rapa Nui and Deerfield Mountain
The Rapa Nui Reef Project started as an idea to create a man-made that would be a one-of-a-kind public art spectacle. Benefactor Margaret Blume wanted to put large internationally recognizable objects off the coast of Deerfield Beach.
Her son, a diver who had known of the sinking of the Miracle of Life, pointed her in the direction of Pavan. They got a team together that included Jim Chiefy Mathie, the Deerfield Beach Womans Club, and Dennis MacDonald the artist commissioned to bring the reef to life. A model was created with the Rapa Nui (Polynesian term for Easter Island) theme. A 150 long and 45 wide by 9 high barge was to be used as a vessel to hold the sculptures. With the barge as a stage, 15 concrete Moai statues were built alongside piles of rubble and one ceremonial platform with 3 statues sitting on top. The largest Moai reached an impressive 22 feet tall. With approval from the City of Deerfield Beach, the barge was scheduled to be scuttled on June 7th, 2015. It was towed from Stuart down to 2 Georges at the Cove Restaurant where it served as a backdrop for benefits for the Public Art initiative.
Deerfield Mountain was placed close to Rapa Nui as part of Broward Artificial reef program.

Deerfield Beach Pier Clean-Up 2015 by Dixie Divers
Our annual Pier Clean-Up 2015. This year over 400 volunteers show up for the event. Dixie Divers with help of City of Deerfield Beach has arranged to have Deerfield Beach Pier closed on June 6th 2015 from 9:00am until 12:00pm so that divers can maneuver among the pilings with safety. Volunteers are needed to dive the pier and for the land duties such as pulling up the buckets the divers will fill with mono-filament line and lead sinkers and to co-ordinate the surface onlookers. All volunteers can keep as many lead sinkers as they like or you can help by cleaning the beach or by just talking about diving and our local environment. Mono-filament line is a hazard to many sea creatures especially sea turtles and birds who get wrapped up and cannot free themselves. These poor creatures eventually starve so please join us and help clean our local area of this danger to our underwater friends. This is the 6th annual Reef Sweep presented by Dixie Divers. City of Deerfield Beach will keep records of the trash weights and different composition. Dixie Divers will be video taping the divers and volunteers who participate for a DVD that will be given to City of Deerfield Beach and Broward County for their environmental education programs. Dixie Divers has received a recognition for excellence from 2010 PADI Americas for Project Aware Marine
Environmental Award. The Pier dive is one of the most fun for local divers because of the variety of creatures and the abundance of life there. Normally closed to divers because of fishing this once a year treat lets us help the environment and dive a forbidden spot all at the same time. Keep us in mind for next year event. Let's do it again. Thanks all the volunteers and special thanks to the Womans'Club of Deerfield Beach.

Barefoot Mailman Underwater Memorial off Deerfield Beach
The original Barefoot Mailman statue (seen here) has been prepped to be placed on the ocean floor as an artificial reef and dive destination. The statue was created in 1973 and placed in front of the Barefoot Mailman Hotel on Hillsboro Beach.
Later it was placed on the hotel roof.
When the hotel closed in the 80s, the statue was acquired by the city of Hillsboro and placed in front of the town hall.
Eventually a new, bigger version was created and this original statue was moved to the U.S. Coast Guard grounds next to the Hillsboro Lighthouse at the Hillsboro Inlet.
Over time, the salt spray and corrosive environment damaged the statue considerably and in 2012 it was again replaced, this time by a new, larger version made of bronze.
Finally, the old, worn statue was acquired by a local dive shop, Dixie Divers. They had it restored and prepared to be deposited under the sea. Now he is resting just off Angels Reef in 38 Feet of water half mile off south of pier of Deerfield Beach.

The Deerfield Beach Ledges Beach Dive:
The Deerfield Beach Ledges run in line with the green hut on the Deerfield Beach pier. The reefs runs from the pier to past The Cove building. This South Florida Beach dive location is great for snorkeling, free diving and beginner scuba divers.
The Deerfield Beach Ledges are a busy boating area and you MUST use a dive flag when scuba diving or snorkeling.
A dumbass on a jet ski came within 20ft of my flag last time I was snorkeling here!
