If you have decided to travel around Latvia, do not forget to visit Priekule and Priekule Region in the very southwest of Latvia where the borderline with the Republic of Lithuania goes. In Priekules Region you will meet many warm-hearted and creative people, who still honor Ikars of Priekule, a manor blacksmith, who by landing from the church tower with his self-made wings proved to the world that a man can fly like birds. The legend about Ikars of Priekule is still alive today, it is reflected in the emblem of the region, and in honor of this legend each year on the second Saturday of August we are celebrating the biggest festival in the region. We suggest you to begin your journey across the Priekule Region from Priekule, the Swedish gate Zviedru vārti a very symbolic place where seven roads have crossed since ancient times. In the renovated Lutheran church you can get to know the history of Priekule, listen to the sounds of the organ and see Priekule's surroundings through the windows of the church tower. In Priekule Parish, we encourage you to commemorate World War II by visiting the Memorial of Warrior's Cemetery and reading the death-rolls of killed soldiers. But from the viewpoints of the nature reserve park in Ruņupe valley you can find similarities with the most beautiful places in Latvia.

Aizpute (German: Hasenpoth) is a town in western Latvia's Aizpute Municipality in the valley of Tebra River, 50 km northeast of Liepāja. The territory of modern Aizpute was inhabited by ancient Curonians since the 9th century. St. John Lutheran church was built on the Curonian hillfort. In the 13th century during the Livonian crusade, the territory of Aizpute was conquered by German crusaders. In 1248 the master of the Livonian Order Dietrich von Grüningen ordered the building of a stone castle in Aizpute. The castle and the whole settlement became known as Hasenpoth. After the partition of Courland in 1253 Aizpute became part of the Bishopric of Courland. In 1260 Aizpute church was built.
Bishop of Courland Otto granted Magdeburg rights to Aizpute in 1378.
In the second half of the 16th century Aizpute experienced rapid development because the Tebra river was used as the main trade route for the merchants of Aizpute who shipped their cargo down to the sea. After the Polish-Swedish war all trade and shipping infrastructure was destroyed and Aizpute started to experience decline. During the period 1611-1795 it was under the power of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth as a capital of the semi-autonomous Powiat Piltynski (District of Piltene).
In 1795 Aizpute and the whole of Courland was incorporated into the Russian Empire and became part of the Courland Governorate. During the Russian revolution of 1905 Aizpute was one of the places where local revolutionists showed armed resistance to Cossack punitive units. It led to the so-called Aizpute War.

Dikli palace. Latvia
Dikļi palace was built in the Neo-Baroque style in 1896 and restored in 2003. The second most important component of the Dikļi palace ensemble is the barn, which pre-dates the palace and was built in the late eighteenth century using elements of late Classicism and featuring a majestic portico, untypical for barns in Vidzeme. Dikļu pils PreviousNext The buildings of the Dikļi palace are organically complemented by a park spanning 20 hectares. Adjacent to the palace lies a duck pond, which is said to have had a floor made of oak. Mazbriede River begins just beyond the pond, whose ravines contain a landscape garden, also known as the Forest Park. In the 1960s, after surveying Dikļi palace park, it was found that approximately 20 exotic trees grow on its grounds. Dikļi palace is one of the few palaces and landed estates in Vidzemes where much of the original interior décor has been relatively well-preserved. The palace contains a collection of luxurious old stoves and fireplaces. Dikļi palace was restored in 2003. At the moment, the palace houses a hotel, a restaurant, a spa and it provides a venue for various functions.latvia.travel

Saldus - a Drop of Honey in Courland.wmv
Join TheCeļotājs excursions of Latvian Cities, Towns and Villages as we visit the Town of Saldus Latvia and explore Saldus sights with my host and guide Laura Liepina of Saldus Tourism Information Centre.
As we explore the town of Saldus, we can see its early and present day history with its many wooden structures as well as modern day structures. With its old cobblestone as well as more modern paved streets. While I was visiting Saldus, they even had a new street repaving ceremony, even with speeches and ribbon cutting. Bridge reconstruction and new construction of a new music school being built with an opening schedule of 2013. One has to visit Saldus yourself to see its many historical sights as well as feel its historical heritage.
Legend about Saldus
In the spot where Saldus resides today, there once was a large hill. At the top of this hill, a small boy tended his pigs. One day this boy discovered a large hole in the hill and crawled into it. Inside he found a town with friendly inhabitants. They served him sweet food and drinks. In the evening, the pigs returned home without the boy. All wandered what had happened to the boy. He returned home only the next day. The locals inquired, Where were you all night long? The boy replied, I ate sweetly, I drank sweetly, on top of Saldus hill. As the boy spoke these words, the hill exploded and from underneath, a town rose.
So it had happened as ordained -- when the name of the town is spoken, the town w ill rise up.
Saldus is a Drop of Honey in Courland
Saldus is a small town in Courland nestled in a cozy valley next to the River Ciecere and Lake Saldus, so that sharp winds rush over it, but all the good things trickle into the heart of the town.
Drop by drop, history, art, culture, and activity flow into Saldus creating a sweet and extraordinary fusion. Like a drop of honey has to be tasted when melting on the tongue, also Saldus has to be discovered step by step enjoying the atmosphere of the town and finding new and unexpected delights.
Saldus can be discovered as the Sweet Town watching the brisk activities of the local sweets manufacturers and tasting their products; as the town of Janis Rozentāls taking a tour to the great Latvian artist's favorite painting locations and seeing the church he depicted on his diploma painting. One can also listen to popular songs and sing along until the dawn at the rock festival Saldus Saule The Sun of Saldus, which is the oldest and richest in tradition rock festival in Latvia.
In the surrounding area there is a wide choice of recreational possibilities for extreme adventure lovers, nature friends and creative people who like to get acquainted with the local culture and history.
