Visit Bhutan with Little Bhutan ::
Dochula pass is 3,050 meters abobe sea-level and the first high pass in the western region which is 23 kilometers from Thimphu on the way to Punakha. It is marked by large array of prayer flags.
On a clear day a panoramic view of the Bhutanese Himalayas can be seen from here. The 108 chortens built by Queen Mother Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck to honor His Majesty the Fourth King in 2003 is one of the main attractions there.

On the way to Punakha from Thimphu, We stopped at the amazing Dochula pass which is just 25 Kms from Thimphu.
At an altitude of 3100 metres the temperature is freezing cold.
On a clear sunny day the views are amazing and you would never want to leave this place.
Special thanks to Namgay our driver in Thimphu who was very nice and showed us amazing places in Thimphu and Punakha which most drivers would skip. He also charged reasonably without much bargaining whereas most of the other drivers that we met used to bargain a lot.
You can contact him to book his taxi for a day sight seeing in Thimphu or Punakha etc.

To visit Dochula and Punakha you have to get Route permit for Punakha from Immigration office in Thimphu.

Dochu La (3050m) from where one can have a spectacular view of the Himalayas to the north when the sky is clear. The pass is marked by 108 chortens (Stupa) which are Buddhist reliquaries, memorials to the teachings of the Buddha. Sometimes actual relics of the Buddha or revered monks are inserted into the dome of the stupa, but whether or not there are relics inside, the stupas mark the landscape with reminders of the Buddhas teachings...

Dochula pass is located on the way to Punakha from Thimphu. The pass is a popular location among tourists as it offers a stunning 360 degree panoramic view of Himalayan mountain range. The view is especially scenic on clear, winter days with snowcapped mountains forming a majestic backdrop to the tranquility of the 108 chortens gracing the mountain pass.
Known as the Druk Wangyal Chortens- the construction of these108 chortens was commissioned by the eldest Queen Mother, Her Majesty Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuk. The pass is also popular spiritual destination for both locals and tourists because an important temple is located on the crest of Dochula pass.
The Druk Wangyal Lhakhang (temple) was built in honor of His Majesty the fourth Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Singye Wangchuck. The past and future appears to merge in the details of the lhakhang (temple) and its structure tells the story of a supreme warrior figure, whose vision pierces the distant future in a fine blend of history and mythology.
Bhutanese families enjoy visiting the pass during holidays and weekends to picnic and simply enjoy the scenery. It is common to see families and groups of friends seated amongst the chortens, enjoying a packed lunch and hot tea. For tourists this is ideal location to capture beautiful pictures of Himalayan mountain range during clear, warm days.

Dechencholing Palace (Dzongkha: བདེ་ཆེན་ཆོས་གླིང་, dechencholing) is located in Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) to the north of the Tashichho Dzong and 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) north of the city centre. It was built in 1953 by the third king of Bhutan Druk Gyalpo Jigme Dorji Wangchuck.

Dochula pass is not the highest mountain pass in Bhutan but also one of the most beautiful mountain pass, which is near about 20 km from Thimphu. It is built in honor of 108 Bhutanese soldiers who died in a 2003 military operation. Dochula pass is concentrated of 108 memorial stupas known as Druk Wangyal Chortens.
The best time time to visit Dochula Pass is: September to December.

Bhutan, a Buddhist kingdom on the Himalayas’ eastern edge, is known for its monasteries, fortresses (or dzongs) and dramatic landscapes that range from subtropical plains to steep mountains and valleys. In the High Himalayas, peaks such as 7,326m Jomolhari are popular trekking destinations. Paro Taktsang monastery (also known as Tiger’s Nest) clings to cliffs above the forested Paro Valley.

DOCHULA PASS IN BHUTAN....
Driving from Dochula pass, into Thimphu, capital of Bhutan
Road trip in Bhutan, into Thimphu : the capital of Bhutan. Driving in from the outskirts, having descended from Dochula pass, one can see Thimphu town on the true right bank of the Thimphu Chhu river, as one descends on the true left bank, passing through the new part of town. we wonder why such a long stretch of the road has been fenced in - is it to prevent garbage being thrown into the river? As one crosses the Thimphu Chhu, one gets into the center of town on the true right bank.
Drive through the heart of Bhutan, through the town and finally land up outside Hotel Druk in the center square. Parked cars have their blinkers on, as it's getting to be dark.
The towns in Bhutan are nowhere near as crowded and messy as the towns we have in Delhi among the other shopping centers and 'bazaars'.
Drive around Thimphu city with us in this virtual drive-through video of Bhutan's capital city which is more of a town, really. Passing smaller Indian cars admixed with Toyota Land Cruisers and other Japanese SUV's, one gets an idea of the general traffic and car brand mix of Bhutan's capital city.
Drive through the main roads of the town of Thimphu and see the sparse traffic in the evening light. The sky is a deep azure blue colour in the dim evening light.
Some of the newer buildings are multi-storeyed and made of concrete cement designs unlike the exquisite traditional architecture of Bhutan.
With the day coming to an end the street lights in the towns slowly start coming on.
