Salford Quays
Following the dockyard closures, Salford Quays has been regenerated on a colossal scale. Today, the area thrives from a world-class media-hub, luxury waterfront developments and landmark arts venues.
In contrast to the City Centre, The Quays enjoy ample space, with dockland panoramas lined by leisurely, traffic-free promenades.
Home to The Lowry and Imperial War Museum North, Salford Quay's forms a cultural epicentre: providing art, film, history and the latest theatre shows - whilst discerning shoppers can indulge at the Lowry Outlet mall, offering high-street brands and restaurant chains, as well as gym facilities and a multi-screen cinema.
The Metrolink provides transport throughout the Quays and connects you to the entire city. At the end of the line is Media City UK, a vast multiplex of studios and offices that house an array of television, radio, production and communication enterprises, including the BBC, ITV and the famous cobbles of Coronation Street.
Across the docks wields the world famous global sports brand, Manchester United, on home turf at Old Trafford. From the hub of the Helly Hanson Watersports centre; sailing, rowing, wind surfing and wakeboarding are commonplace at the Quays, with various basins dedicated for outdoor activities including organised triathlons and regular outdoor swimming events. Exquisite restaurants and bars are tucked amongst Media City's thoroughfares, and the high-end supermarket, Booths, lavishes grocery essentials. Stylish apartments and wharf-side properties populate the area, whilst future developments continue to rise with the ever increasing demand.

Father-of-three who reels in bag full of guns after fishing with magnets
A family who went magnet fishing reeles in a bag full of guns and ammunition. Father Douglas Simcock, 39, found the weapons when he was fishing with his family on August 26 at around 2.15pm. The arsenal was discovered wrapped in yellow hi-vis jacket with bricks in it. Douglas, who has been fishing for two months now - was out with his wife Sarah Simcock 29, daughter Hayley, 9, and son Josh, 10, near the river Irwell, Salford. A two-sides magnet which can lift 300kg was used to when the guns were found.
The Village Manchester
The Village is located in the heart of the city centre and forms one of Manchester’s most well-known areas. It is minutes away from Piccadilly train station, has nearby access to the Metrolink from St Peter's Square, neighbours the UK's second largest Chinatown, and lies within walking distance to Manchester's university campuses.
Originally, the area was home to the booming Cotton industry. The iconic industrial buildings were saved and converted into highly desirable dwellings for anybody wanting to live in the city centre. Many of these developments retain sought-after original features and industrial character. Over time, bars opened on the now famous Canal Street, and the 90's brought a glass fronted Revolution to modernize the area. This was emblematic of an out and-proud LGBT community that we see today, and is further commemorated by the Alan Turing memorial in Sackville Gardens.
From a vibrant nightlife, to the everday goings-on across our great city,
The Village brings all that Manchester has to offer to your doorstep. If you'd like more information, please contact Julie Twist Properties on 0161 834 8486

BBC MANCHESTER MEDIA CITY VISIT
BBC Manchester Media City Visit
On 19th April myself & Andy Hilbert went to visit the BBC in Manchester and have a look around the Radio and TV. This the result.
There is never a dull day at MediaCityUK. Atmosphere is central to the MediaCityUK ethos and with a host of cultural and sporting attractions, cinemas, world class events, shopping, an abundance of bars and restaurants and a diversity of people living and working here – atmosphere is certainly something that is never lacking.
MediaCityUK is Manchester’s newest destination and we love working with our neighbours and business brands to bring innovative events and activities to our community.
MediaCityUK is a 200-acre (81 ha) mixed-use property development site on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal in Salford and Trafford, Greater Manchester, England. The project is being developed by Peel Media, and its principal tenants are media organisations and the University of Salford. The land occupied by the development was part of the Port of Manchester and Manchester Docks.
The BBC signalled its intention to move jobs to Manchester in 2004, and the Salford Quays site was chosen in 2006. The Peel Group was granted planning permission to develop the site in 2007, and construction of the development, with its own energy generation plant and communications network, began the same year. Based in Quay House, the principal tenant is the BBC, whose move marks a large-scale decentralisation from London. ITV Granada completed the first phase of its move to MediaCityUK on 25 March 2013, followed in two stages by the northern arm of ITV Studios: the second stage involved Coronation Street being moved to a new production facility on Trafford Wharf (next to the Imperial War Museum North) at the end of 2013. The Studios on Broadway houses seven high-definition studios, claimed to be the largest such facility in Europe.
MediaCityUK is to be developed in two phases. The 36-acre (15 ha) first phase was completed in 2011, and the second is dependent on its success. Metrolink, Greater Manchester's light-rail system, was extended to MediaCityUK with the opening of the MediaCityUK tram stop on 20 September 2010 and further extensions are planned. Road access was improved by the construction of Broadway Link Road.

Stannah lifts with 'Ding-Dong' arrival door bells at Premier Inn
Admittedly, musical door bells would have been more interesting, but it's still unusual to have these mechanical solenoid door bells connected to a lift.
These must be on the car top, and are easily heard on any floor regardless of where the lift is.
I found the lift machine room fairly easily, and it was unlocked. I did open the door, but to be honest, risking getting caught in there wasn't worth it considering all a hyraulic lift motor room is, is just a tank of oil with a pump and a control box - nothing really worth looking it. This was right next to reception and in a busy corridor, so it was a bit risky to venture in anyhow! If it had been a traction lift then i'd been in there filming!
DESCRIPTION OF A SOLENOID DOOR BELL
It's a bit like a xylophone with a solenoid as a hammer (look up 'xylophone' on the net if you don't know what it is).
The door bell, in it's basic form, is two plates of metal which when hit, vibrate. There are two lengths of plate: a small plate that makes a higher tone (when hit) and a larger plate which makes a deeper tone (when hit).
These plates are mounted in a box, one of the left, one on the right. Between these plates is a 'hammer' that hits the small plate first (which gives a ding), then hits the larger plate second (which gives the 'dong').
A solenoid moves the hammer (which is really just a bar of metal that moves left and right). This hammer only gives the metal plates a quick touch in both directions, otherwise it would stop the dampen the tone by stopping the vibrations.
Here is the sequence...
Solenoid gets power - it shoots across and strikes the small plate (DING), when de-powered, the solenoid is spring loaded and returns to it's original position, but hits the DONG plate on it's return.
Ok, hope you understand my description! It's an old fashioned door bell essentially!
(I love explaining things by the way!)

Northern Quarter Manchester
The trendy, Bohemian area known as the Northern Quarter is popular both with young professionals and students who want to be in the thick of all that is happening now in Manchester. With a wealth of independent bars and restaurants woven within the many streets all of which have their very own individual identity.
The Northern Quarter has some of the most amazing apartments in Manchester; Smithfield Buildings raised the bar selling the first £300,000 apartment in Manchester in 1996 and people even slept outside for days to be the first to buy these unique apartments! A similar approach happened at 25 Church Street, the Conran designed apartments, The Burton Buildings is one of the smaller developments in the area and had a very successful marketing campaign in conjunction with the Manchester Giants who showed off how impressive the tall doors were as they could fit through them! There are many apartments hidden away on Tib Street as well as some of the very few town houses in Manchester. There’s something for everyone in the Northern Quarter from gyms to convenience stores on your doorstep and the well-known “Afflecks Palace;” the Northern Quarter offers the quirk and charm not found in other parts of the city.
Located close to the main shopping area, there is a constant supply of buses and easy access to the tram. Both Piccadilly Train station and Bus Station are only a short walk away. By car the ring road is easily accessible linking to the M56 and Manchester International Airport.
