The Dokumentation Obersalzberg and bunker tour, Obersalzberg, Berchtesgaden, Germany.
The Dokumentation Obersalzberg (Documentaion Centre) explains the history of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party in the Obersalzburg area of Bavaria, Germany.
It was in Obersalzberg, close to the location of the centre, that Adolf Hitler had the small summer cottage/hut where he wrote the second part of Mein Kampf.
With the proceeds of this successful book, Hitler began to buy up parts of this beautiful area which as he rose to power became his (and the Nazi partys) southern base. There is a particular focus on the Berghof, his OTT mansion, which was destroyed soon after the war but whos foundations are still accessible not far from the centre.
The centre explains how the area went from one of beauty to one of 'fame' and now of infamy. Like other documentation centres in Germany the current museum explains the history of the Obersalzberg but about 90% of the displays are in German only. There is a new, much larger centre under construction (July 2019) which may hopefully address this and expand the understanding of this important area.
One surprising feature is the bunker access beneath the hillside close by (underneath the new museum). This was an unexpected addition to the experience and although it contained minimal information, it was certainly worth visiting.

A small town in southeastern Bavaria lends its name to the only national park in the German Alps. Berchtesgaden is delightfully picturesque but has a dark past, which is explained in a documentation center.

Adolf Hitler's Berghof in Berchtesgaden (in color and HD)

On 25 April 1945, five days before Hitler's suicide, four-engine bombers of the British Royal Air Force attacked the Berghof and its surroundings. However, the Berghof itself was only slightly damaged. On 4 May 1945, allied troops occupied Berchtesgaden without a fight. The occupation of the Obersalzberg was so prestigious that American and French units competed for it. Before the arrival of the victorious powers, SS men had set fire to the damaged Berghof, and the population also looted the building. According to Guido Knopp, in May 1945 a team of the former U. S. military secret service CIC inter alia also detained Hitler's sister Paula Hitler, who had hid near the mountain station.

BERCHTESGADEN GERMANY POST-WWII TRAVELOGUE 70352
Made after WWII, this charming silent travelogue shows Berchtesgaden. Berchtesgaden is a municipality in the German Bavarian Alps. It is located in the south district of Berchtesgadener Land in Bavaria, near the border with Austria, some 30 km south of Salzburg and 180 km southeast of Munich. To the south of the city the Berchtesgaden National Park stretches along three parallel valleys.
Berchtesgaden is often associated with the Watzmann, at 2,713 m the third-highest mountain in Germany (after Zugspitze and Hochwanner), which is renowned in the rock climbing community for its Ostwand (East Face), and a deep glacial lake by the name of Königssee (5.2 km²). Another notable peak is the Kehlstein mountain (1,835 m) with its Kehlsteinhaus (Eagle's Nest), which offers spectacular views to its visitors.
The area of Obersalzberg was purchased by the Nazis in the 1920s for their senior leaders to enjoy. Hitler's mountain residence, the Berghof, was located here. Berchtesgaden and its environs (Stanggass) were fitted to serve as an outpost of the German Reichskanzlei office (Imperial Chancellery), which sealed the area's fate as a strategic objective for Allied forces in World War II. Some typical Third Reich buildings in Berchtesgaden include the railway station, that had a reception area for Hitler and his guests, and the post office next to the railway station. The Berchtesgadener Hof Hotel was a hotel where famous visitors stayed, such as Eva Braun, Erwin Rommel, Joseph Goebbels and Heinrich Himmler, as well as Neville Chamberlain and David Lloyd George. The hotel was demolished in 2006. There is a museum on the spot now, called Haus der Berge.
A number of other relics of the Nazi era can still be found in the area, although only a few of them are still well preserved. There is the Kehlsteinhaus (nicknamed Eagle's Nest by a French diplomat), which was built as a present for Hitler's 50th birthday in 1939. The remnants of homes of former Nazi leaders—such as Adolf Hitler, Hermann Göring and Martin Bormann—were all demolished in the early postwar years.
The Platterhof was retained and served as a holiday and recreation retreat (Armed Forces Recreation Centers) for the American military. It was known as the General Walker Hotel. It was demolished in 2000. The only remaining fully intact buildings are the former SS HQ at Hotel Zum Türken, Albert Speer's house and the Kehlsteinhaus. A small part of the Platterhof is also still there. The information centre on the mountain is the former guesthouse Höher Göll. It has an entrance to the Obersalzberg bunker system.

1936 Former British PM Lloyd George Visits Berchtesgaden
Summer 1936. British former prime minister David Lloyd George visiting Adolf Hitler in Berchtesgaden. Lloyd George offered some public comments that were surprisingly favourable to the German dictator, expressing warm enthusiasm both for Hitler personally and for Germany's public works schemes (upon returning, he wrote of Hitler in the Daily Express as the greatest living German, the George Washington of Germany).

Road up to Obersalzberg : Hitler's home
Adolf Hitler first came to the Obersalzberg above Berchtesgaden before his attempted coup d'etat in November 1923. After his release from prison, he was a frequent visitor and in 1933 he bought a house he had frequently stayed at which in turn was greatly enlarged in the 1930s when the village of Obersalzberg became the de facto second capital of Nazi Germany - if not the capital when Hitler was in residence. The Berghof, his house, became what its name in German suggests - the mountain court. The building was damaged in an air raid in April 1945 and was burned down by retreating SS troops just before the arrival of the Americans. In 1952 the US handed it backed to the Bavarian authorities but on condition that it was destroyed. Today one sees the remains that could not be destroyed such as the support wall but there are plenty of stones and bricks that once formed part of Hitler's house. Today one can stand in the place, now overgrown, where Eva Braun made her home movies or where photographers captured the Nazi elite on film.

A walk around Berchtesgaden, Germany
Berchtesgaden is about as far south as one can get in Germany, it is the Germany of fairy stories and nineteenth century literature, the Germany that one imagines from countless stories. It is therefore no surpirse that it is a popular tourist destination and it has very much to offer not only from the great outdoors of the Alps, the Berchtesgaden national park with the outstanding glacial lake Konigsee but also for the fairy tale town itself with its royal palace, 500 year old salt mine and outstanding Bavarian charm. In this film, we can see a walk around the town.

Winter sports enthusiasts will love Berchtesgaden, a village in the German Alps with several ski slopes and a top-notch bobsled track. Visit the Berchtesgaden Salt Mines (TripAdvisor travelers rave about their slides!). Nearby Lake Königsee makes a great day trip.

The town is located in a valley at 500 to 1100 m altitude in the south-eastern part of the German Alps and is surrounded by high mountains called Untersberg in the North, Obersalzberg in the east and further south by the Watzmann. Berchtesgaden and neighbouring Bad Reichenhall are famous for their salt mines. The production of table salt guaranteed in the medieval ages a safe source of revenue and it still does today. Therefore, a visit to the salt mine of Berchtesgaden is definitely on the to do list.
In more recent history, the name of Berchtesgaden became well known to the general public for more unfortunate reasons: the Nazi dictator of Germany, Adolf Hitler, had his summer getaway on the peak in a complex of buildings known as the Berghof at Obersalzberg. A house was built for him at the peak of the mountain above Obersalzberg, but he only visited it a couple of times. It is known in German as the Kehlsteinhaus, and was dubbed “The Eagles Nest” by the occupying American forces after the war. All the buildings and bunkers of the Berghof were destroyed at the end of the World War II and nowadays a documentation centre can be found close to the place on the Obersalzberg. The Kehlsteinhaus is accessible via bus from Obersalzberg, and has now been converted to a restaurant.
Berchtesgaden has its fair share of tourism all around the year, and has retained its original charming character. House fronts around the market place, palace and elsewhere in Berchtesgaden are decorated with murals.
Kehlsteinhaus (the Eagle's Nest) is located at 1,834 m altitude on top of Berchtesgaden and provides a marvellous and unforgettable view over the eastern alps. You can reach it by foot, public transport, but it is not accessible by car. The Kehlsteinhaus was constructed as a present for Hitler on his 50th birthday, although he visited relatively few times. However, the house is interesting as a historical site because it remains with only minor alterations from its original state. At the end of the war, the famed American 101st Airborne Division took control of the house, and it was spared from the destruction suffered by other Nazi leadership buildings in Berchtesgaden, although most of the Nazi era artifacts were looted. Tickets for this attraction can be purchased at the tour center above Berchtesgaden in the village of Obersalzberg.
Königsee is located 3 miles south of Berchtesgaden and is famous for the lake Königsee, which is the deepest lake in the alps and is surrounded by very steep mountain that raise up 2000 m above the lake level. You can make a boat trip to the other side of the lake to visit the world famous “Kloster St. Bartolomä”, the smaller lake “Obersee” and enjoy the wildlife of the national park. Hiking is very popular in summer and tours around the lake are sign posted. Routes are prepared by the “Deutsche Alpenverein” and they indicate usually how long it takes to get to your destination and they indicate how difficult they are.
Jenner Mountain is on the east side of the Königssee and due to the cable car an easy possibility to have an excellent view over the Berchtesgaden valley.
Berchtesgaden Salt Mine is one of the two saltmines in the Salzberg. The other one is on the Austrian side.
Rossfeld is 3 miles from Berchtesgaden and 1600 m high a very beautiful spot for walks in the sunshine and above the clouds or skiing. There are several restaurants that offer local food at reasonable pricing and you can rest there and take a bath in the sun on chairs that are provided on a rental bases. The Rossfeld can be reached on a toll road or by bus. The toll road is very well maintained and free of snow and ice all around the year.
Obersalzbergbahn is the second, smaller cable car in Berchtesgaden and will bring you onto the Obersalzberg but not upon its top. The the upper station you can enjoy a summer bob sledding run.
