Ancient Bangarada Doddi Dam and Gajendramoksha Kalyani in Srirangapatana Tourism Karnataka Tourism
Bangarada Doddi Dam and Gajendramoksha Kalyani in Srirangapatana Tourism Karnataka Tourism. Ancient Bangara Doddi (canal) in Srirangapatna is a very tangible artifact holding the key to rich tales about the Mysuru Wadiyars. More than three centuries’ old, this canal is believed to be the first aqueduct ever built in Asia, and the first check dam constructed by a Kannada ruler across the Cauvery. Built during the reign of Ranadheera Kantirava Narasaraja Wadiyar between 1638 and ’59, the canal was meant to serve the irrigation requirements of Srirangapatna, besides meeting the drinking water needs of the island town.
When daily wagers discovered two tunnels near Sri Ranganatha Swamy temple in Srirangapatna on January 29, 2013, experts at government agencies had instructed the revenue officials not to “touch” them as they had archaeological value.
An assurance to excavate the area to explore the historical significance of the tunnels was also issued. However, nothing has been done to protect the tunnels.
Wadiyar dynasty
The district administration had taken up restoration of the Gajendra Moksha ‘kalyani’ [temple pond] in 2013 and the two tunnels, with a single entrance, were found at the time.
According to experts, the tunnels are believed to be constructed during the reign of Dodda Krishnaraja Wadiyar of Mysore Wadiyar dynasty. However, some believe that they were constructed during the Tipu-British era.The tunnels were constructed with bricks and other materials.
Many theories
Several theories revolve around their origin. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) sources said that the tunnels were constructed to supply rainwater to the pond or to discharge waste water from it. Local residents believe that the tunnels will lead to the ‘gharba gudi’ of temple.
“Our ancestors would say that a huge quantity of treasures was hidden beneath a place near the temple and it has several secret ways in the form of tunnels,” a shopkeeper near the entrance of the temple told The Hindu . This might be one of those secret ways, he said.
Revenue officials opined that the tunnels were constructed to draw water from the Bangara Doddi canal to fill the temple pond.
