Abandoned Village - Doel, Beveren - Visit Belgium #21/589
A Belgian Challenge, I would like to visit all 589 Belgian Municipalities. In this video I visit Beveren, East Flanders.
The first stop of the day was the abandoned village of Doel. This village is part of the municipality of Beveren in the province of East Flanders. Doel is a 400 year old village situated next to the port of Antwerpen. The village is supposed to disappear because they want to built a second container dock. It's not clear if this will be the case.
In the 70's the village had a population of 1300, today there are less than 25 inhabitants left, fighting for their village.
Most houses are abandoned and destroyed. There is a lot of graffiti and street art. The place was a bit surreal for me.
The second stop was the fortress Liefkenshoek (Liefkenshoekfort). This fortress contains an interactive museum that tells you all about the history of the fortress and it's completely free!

GHOST TOWN | DOEL, BELGIUM
Editing & filming by Wouter Verbraak
January 28, 2017
For 700 years, Doel stood near Antwerp along the Scheldt River in Belgium, and includes a home that once belonged to the family of painter Peter Paul Reubens. As Antwerp expanded in the 20th century, its port needed more space, and Doel quickly became a target for demolition. Trying to force residents out, the government scheduled demolitions multiple times, but were beaten by popular protests from the 1970s through the 1990s.
But despite the will of the people, Doel could not be saved and in 1999, the town was officially scheduled for complete demolition. In 2007, a campaign group called Doel 2020 set into motion a plan to ensure Doel’s survival by turning it into a haven for street artists. Since that time, residents have trickled out as artists have made their way in. The increasingly abandoned town became the perfect playground for street artists from across Europe to debut their works around Doel.
Today, there are only about 25 inhabitants left, all of whom are bravely flaunting mandates that they vacate their homes immediately. Meanwhile the town has been transformed into a post-apocalyptic artistic paradise thanks to the murals covering each and every building. Despite these people’s stubborn refusal to leave, the government plans to continue with demolition, at which point all traces of Doel, from residents’ homes to the the living street art, will be lost forever.

Doel The Ghost Town in Belgium
In Belgium there is a place called Doel. Doel lies near Antwerp and has only 26 residents. In this village there were several Graviti artists who put their works on the houses and gave Doel his typical looks.

DOEL: Het grotendeels verlaten spookdorp in België!

The almost abandoned town of Doel - Belgium
Our trip in 2015 to Doel, Belgium. Almost abandoned; a few inhabitants are left. Beautiful town! Not too fond of foreigners like us, comprehensible...
Doel 2017
- This is an explorers paradise. An entire abandoned town, deserted and derelict. Doel is a small town close the Belgian coast. It is threatened with complete demolition due to the future enlargement of the Port of Antwerp. This has seen many people having to sell their homes to the development corporation of that enlargement. Many historical buildings will be destroyed.
