DOFFCOCKER - Winter 2010
The winter of 2010–2011 was a weather event that brought heavy snowfalls, record low temperatures, travel chaos and school disruption to the islands of Britain and Ireland. It included the UK's coldest December since Met Office records began in 1910, with a mean temperature of -1 °C, breaking the previous record of 0.1 °C in December 1981.
The winter of 2010 in England saw the earliest widespread winter snowfall since 1993. On 9 December temperatures recovered across much of the UK, causing a partial thaw.
Later, on Thursday 16 December a cold front reintroduced a cold, arctic airstream. This cold spell brought further snow and ice chaos back to the British Isles. This led to severe disruption to the road and rail network with several airports being closed including London Heathrow. By the New Year a thaw had begun, and there was no recurrence of the extreme conditions for the remainder of the winter. There was some snowfall in early January, and there was an anticyclonic spell at the end of the month that brought some cold, frosty days. February was above average in temperature and ended on a mild note.

Chorley Old Road - Bolton to Doffcocker
This video shows me cycling up the main road that the Beeline proposed for the route shown in this video is said to avoid:
It's the return journey to that video. It''s also a bit of a hill (about 300 feet in 2.2 miles), which makes cycling in traffic more difficult. Not too bad with the big arsed flag deployed, though.

Jake wanted to try a new park for Pokémon so we headed out to Queens Park in Bolton. I've probably driven past here over one thousand times and never actually been in. Nice park, shame it was freezing cold out!

Rivington Pike Bolton Drone Video
Rivington Pike Bolton is a hill summit on Winter Hill, part of the West Pennine Moors, overlooking the village of Rivington in Lancashire, England. The nearest towns are Adlington and Horwich. The Rivington Pike Bolton is a prominent local landmark which derives its name from the Old English hreof plus ing meaning the rough or rugged hill and pic, a pointed eminence. The Rivington Pike Bolton was recorded as Rovyng in 1325 and Rivenpike in about 1540. Saxton records the name as Rivenpike Hill on his 1577 map.The Rivington Pike Bolton at 1,191 feet (363 metres) high is the most westerly high point of Winter Hill in the West Pennine Moors. The Rivington Pike Bolton moorland is underlain with Carboniferous rocks, the Millstone Grit, sandstones and shales of the Lower Coal Measures which rise high above the Lancashire Plain to the west and Greater Manchester conurbation to the south. The humped shape of theRivington Pike Bolton coincides with a coal seam of the Lower Coal Measures at around 1,148 feet (350 metres) that outcropped and was mined around 1800. There is evidence of bell pits close to the summit.
The natural vegetation is characterised by areas of blanket bog, impoverished upland heath and acid grassland.
An extensive network of footpaths leads to the summit. The highest part of the route to the summit is a footpath and steps built in the 1990s to combat erosion and prevent further deterioration. From the Rivington Pike Bolton it is possible to see Blackpool Tower, the Lake District mountains, the Welsh mountains and as far as the Isle of Man on the clearest days. Rivington Pike Bolton.Rivington Pike Drone.Lever Park was officially opened to the public on the 10th October, 1911, but construction of Liverpool Castle Rivington at Coblowe on the eastern side of the Lower Rivington Reservoir overlooking Cross’ Creek wasn’t begun until 1912
