Hiking around Khun Tan National Park in Thailand
Khun Tan National Park is about 1 hrs by train from Chiang Mai and offers everything you need for a day of disconnecting and relaxing in the nature.
The trail isn’t too demanding and has various viewpoints along the way. We did the ‘small’ tour and hiked about 5km to the first viewpoint and back (there are two further summits, the longest tour would be 16km up and down). It takes 1.5km from the train station to the entrance (100 THB per person), the trails are marked.
Take mosquito repellent with you and enough water and snacks as the only options for food are at the train station and right at the park entrance (which seemed to close occasionally).
There aren’t many visitors around (most are locals) so you may find yourself hiking pretty much alone.
There are only two trains in the morning leaving from Chiang Mai, one at 06:30, the other around 08:30 (15 THB, 3rd class / 50 THB, 2nd class, passport is required, reconfirm the departure timings before you go).

Northern Line Pt 2: Lamphun - Tha Chomphu: leave the city, for rural plains - Thai Railways
In the Northern Line Pt. 2 we continue our journey south, which started at the northern terminal station of Chiang Mai, Thailand. In this section we depart Lamphun station, 729.21 km from Bangkok, leaving the urbanisation of the cities behind, travelling through the rural landscape and crossing the fertile plains to Tha Chomphu station, 691.89 km from Bangkok, a total distance of 37.32 km, which takes just over 30 minutes to complete. Tha Chomphu is the 2nd highest railway station on the whole network, at 425 m above sea level.

Northern Line Pt 4: Khun Tan - Pang Muang: scenic mountains, tunnel & viaducts - Thai Railways
In the Northern Line Pt. 4, we continue our journey south, which started at the northern terminal station of Chiang Mai. In this section of the journey we leave Khun Tan station, which is 683.14 km from Bangkok, high up in the forested mountains of northern Thailand, in Doi Khun Tan National Park, at an altitude of 577 m. The station at Khun Tan is the highest on the Thai rail network. On leaving the station we go through the network’s longest tunnel, which is 1352.2 m and took 11 years to build, being completed in 2461 (1918). We travel down through the forest, with its breathtaking beauty, en route crossing three huge viaducts, spanning forested gorges and arriving at the beautifully well kept station of Pang Muang, 660.98 km from Bangkok, a journey of 20.16 km, which takes around 25 minutes to complete.

Longest train tunnel in Thailand and rural railways (Khuntan)
Khuntan rail tunnel is the longest of the 7 rail tunnels in Thailand. At one end lies a beautiful well-kept station and a few kilometres down the mountain lies the Chomphu White Bridge.

SRT Northern Line Local Train 407 Hang Chat to Khun Tan รฟท ทางรถไฟสายเหนือ ห้างฉัตร ~ ขุนตาน
The journey continued aboard Local Train 407 on the State Railway of Thailand's Northern Line from Hang Chat to Khun Tan. The end of this program just before Khun Tan features Thailand's longest railway tunnel, the Khun Tan Tunnel which has a length of 1.35 Kms. The station of Khun Tan is also the highest above sea level on the SRT system and is one of the most scenic and popular stations in the country being in the middle of dense jungle.
Twin locos, semaphores & returning helper loco: a steep approach to Khun Tan station - Thai Railways
Watch the No.52 Express train, hauled by twin locomotives assend the steep northern approach to Khun Tan station, in the Doi Khun Tan National Park, along with the return of the helper loco back down the hill afterwards and see the semaphore signals in action!
The twin Alsthom locomotives, Nos. 4308 & 4227, were built in 1983 and 1980, respectively, each produce 2,400hp with a top speed of 100 km/hr. This No. 52 Express service left Chiang Mai at 15:40 and is due to arrive in Bangkok at 05.25 the following morning.

Northern Line Pt 1: Chiang Mai - Lamphun: leave the city behind - Thai Railways
This video is the first in a series, which will take us several 100 km south, on the Northern Line, through the slow and winding forested mountains, through tunnels and across bridges, and viaducts in northern Thailand, and out onto the fertile central planes, were abundant rice is cultivated.
In the Northern Line Pt. 1 we start our journey south by leaving the terminal station of Chiang Mai, 751.42 km from Bangkok, travelling to Lamphun station, which is 22.21 km from Chiang Mai, a distance of 729.21 km from Bangkok, a journey of around 20 minutes.

Doi Suthep-Pui National Park
Instead of doing a guided tour, I rented a moped and decided to head up the 1004 and see where I end up. Viewpoints are free, but everything comes with an entrance fee. Mon Tha Than Waterfall being the most expensive and Hmong Waterfall being the cheapest. The Bhubing Palace does not allow entry into the palace - only the grounds.
Climbing Doi Langka Luang with Summit Wild Camp
Climbing up and wild camping on Doi Langka Luang (ดอยลังกาหลวง), also known as Doi Mae Tho (ดอยแม่โถ) in north Thailand. This is the highest peak of the Khun Tan range, and lies near the junction of the Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Lampang provinces, at the southern tip of the Khun Chae national park. At 2031m above sea level, it is about the 8th highest mountain in Thailand.

We did this hike independently in 2 days. It is not a well-known route and we did not see anyone for the whole route. The night before at the Baan Kon Meuang Doi homestay in the village of Baan Mae Dtoon Luang (some info here: ). The village chief drove us to the start of the hike at Doi Radar, near the Khun Chae national park headquarters. Our first day route took us over Doi Pha Ngom before camping right on the summit of Doi Langka Luang. Our second day route took us over Doi Langka Noi and back down to Baan Mae Dtoon Luang.
This trek could probably also be arranged through the Khun Chae national park headquarters or commercial trekking companies with a guide/porter, possibly taking longer and using the main campsite featured in the video.
Some of this video was shot with a DJI OSMO camera. It's internal microphone was responsible for the terrible audio which I have done my best to salvage. The other parts were shot with a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 phone.
