Since being founded by Thailand's Princess Mother (mother of the current king) in 1969, the Mae Fah Luang project has aimed to rehabilitate the people and the environment around the golden triangle. The golden triangle is the shared border area between Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos. The area was previously most well known for it's production of opium, the illicit cash crop which ravaged communities who cleared the forest to grow the plant at high altitudes.
To rehabilitate the area the foundation has created several initiatives including it's cottage industry of social enterprises which include Doi Tung coffee, textiles, mulberry paper (aka sa paper), and pottery. These businesses provide jobs to the community and build off of the skills the villager's knowledge, while hiring educated young people to perform more advanced tasks.
In addition to the cottage industry businesses, there is also the Mae Fah Luang Gardens, Arboretum, Krua Thamnak Restaurant, and the macadamia/coffee cultivation projects.
