Doi Tung (ดอยตุง) is a mountain in the Thai highlands of Chiang Rai Province, Thailand.
Doi Tung Royal Villa
The Doi Tung royal villa, former residence of the princess mother Srinagarindra is also high up on the hill.
Thanks to the princess mother's interest and encouragement, the hills were reforested.She was also instrumental in fighting against the opium trade, as a result the local hilltribes stopped growing poppies and began to grow other crops.
The royal villa was originally built as a summer residence for the princess mother and now houses a museum and displaying her work to improve the life quality of local tribal people.
The Mae Fah Luang Gardens are a botanical park on the slopes below the royal villa. Flowers and plants grow among rock formations.
The royal residence of HRH the late Princess Mother formerly served as her base of operations to monitor the work progress at the Doi Tung Development Project. It has since been transformed into a symbol of the Princess Mother's commitment to improving the local people's quality of life.

Chiang Rai Attractions - Doi Tung Royal Palace
The Doi Tung Royal Palace was built as a Winter Retreat for the King's Mother who passed away in 1995. The palace was built so that the hill tribes of the region would be honored by Royal presence so that they could be coaxed into stopping their Opium production.
The palace boasts of a magnificent garden which has a large variety of Orchids and is a must see for anyone headed to Chiang Rai.

There are some truly stunning views in Thailand and none more so in my opinion than the views on the Doi Tung Mountains.
Today Pie and I will take you to the top of the Doi Tung Mountains to the temple, shrine and then onto the military viewpoint where you get to see some incredible views across Myanmar.

Mae Fah Luang Garden & Doi Tung Royal Villa @ Chiang Rai, Thailand
Doi Tung Royal Villa and Mae Fah Luang Garden is a place where true serenity meets captivating views. Truly a Twofer, two amazing places in one spot. They are located on the slopes of Doi Tung Mountain.
All the flowers and plants are grown and nurtured by the local villagers. Mae Fah Luang Garden had also won the Pacific Asia Tourism Association (PATA) Award for Tourist Site Development in 1993.
Going up to the Royal Villa, which was the residence of the Princess Mother Srinakarindra. This beautiful villa is constructed in lanna swiss design architecture with a mixture of concrete and different wood slabs. The interior design exudes graceful, elegance, minimalist and functionality.

Video taken after the rain storm. Great view of neighboring Myanmar (Burma). There is still occasional drug running along this border since there is no natural landmark to mark the border with Burma, e.g. a river, simply the mountain ridge itself and Thai farmers literally rub shoulders with their Burmese counterparts, hence this fortified viewpoint and the numerous army checkpoints you may pass along the way. Climb the stairs and find gun emplacements, trenches, pillboxes, a small memorial and a small army camp where soldiers of the Thai army keep an eye on the Burmese whose soldiers are in camp of their own just few hundred meters down the road.
