WALES Montgomery - Town, Castle and Town Hill
Formerly the county town of Montgomeryshire, Montgomery is now part of Powys. The 2011 census listed the population at just 1295 people - nonetheless there are a few shops in the square (Broad Street). As well as a convenience store there is a Post Office, chip shop and one or two others. Just one mile inside the border with England it is a quiet and rather sleepy little town, mainly due to being off the beaten track
Those feeling fit can take a shortish if slightly stiff climb to the Castle, or alternatively just use the car (NB: the car park gets locked at around 6pm, so best check before you leave it there!)
From the Castle there is another rather pleasant ramble to the top of Town Hill where the monument is to be found - I think its official name is something like 'County War Memorial'. There are superb views to be found from here. You will however notice that the monument seems designed for some adornment atop of it, and puzzlingly there isn't anything

Dolforwyn Castle
Dolforwyn Castle was the last great Welsh castle built by Llywelyn ap Gruffudd between 1273 and 1277. Llywelyn had been recognised by King Henry III as Prince of Wales under the terms of the Treaty of Montgomery on 19th September 1267, and Llywelyn began the building of the castle in order to affirm his control over lands he had invaded and captured between 1257 and 1263 in the Severn Valley.
Shortly after the castle had been completed, it was besieged by Roger Mortimer and Henry de Lacy, Earl of Lincoln. The castle had not been built with a well and so the occupants ran out of fresh water, and as a result, it fell on 8th April 1277. The castle was given to Roger Mortimer (who, like Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, was a grandson of Llywelyn Fawr), and was modified to include a well along with several new buildings in the courtyard. Following Mortimer's death in 1282, the castle passed first to his son, Edmund Mortimer, then onto his son, Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March, who lost the family estates in 1322 after an act of treason.
Dolforwyn was occupied during the reign of Richard II, but by 1381 it was described as being in a poor state, and by 1398 was in ruins.
tretower castle
Tretower (Welsh: Gastell Tretŵr[1]) was founded as a motte and bailey castle. In the 12th century, a shell-keep was added to the motte. By c.1230 a tall cylindrical keep was added to the inside of the shell-keep and the space between was roofed over. At this time the earlier bailey was walled in stone and provided with cylindrical corner towers. In the early 14th century residential buildings were constructed away from the original fortifications forming today's Tretower Court. Over time the lords of Tretower favoured the more luxurious Court and the castle fell into disuse.
Description of the castle[edit]
Tretower Castle - From a survey in the beginning of the 6th century
The castle is roughly triangular in plan, with the motte and keep assemblage occupying the western corner. The 12th century shell-keep is an irregular enclosure with a gate-tower on the line of approach from the bailey. In the centre of the shell stands the tall cylindrical 13th century keep. The keep is of three stories, with an original entrance at first floor level, above a strong, slanted batter or talus. The top of the talus is marked by a decorative string-course of stone. The keep is a rare example of a cylindrical keep in the British Isles. Interestingly the surrounding region has a number of examples of this type, for example at Skenfrith, Bronllys and Pembroke. The Tretower keep and the others share similarities with contemporary French models such as Dourdan.

James Corfield had been camping with friends at the Royal Welsh Agricultural Show and had last been seen leaving the pub at midnight on Monday.

A huge search was launched for the 19-year-old after his family raised the alarm when he failed to meet them at the show in Builth Wells.
James' body was tragically found last Saturday and has been formally identified by police .
Montgomery Cricket Club made the brave decision to play the first match without James after his family said they wanted the game to go on.
A minute’s applause echoed across the sports field in tribute to James.
With emotions running high before the match, members of Montgomery Cricket Club hugged each other for support wearing blue armbands decorated with a blue heart and James’ nickname ‘Jimmy’.
The special tribute was paid on Saturday as Montgomery Cricket Club, who James had played for since the age of nine, played against Alberbury and Wellington.
Flowers and pictures of the player were also on display in the team’s clubhouse.
