Dolgarrog dam disaster memorial walk, North Wales
The night of 2 November 1925 was dark and stormy in North Wales. The dam at Llyn Eigiau, up in the mountains west of Dolgarrog, fractured under stress and released a large volume of water down the valley to Coedty reservoir. At 9pm Coedty dam burst with an almighty roar, cascading millions of gallons of water and thousands of tons of Ice Age boulders down a narrow gorge onto the unsuspecting villagers of Dolgarrog.
By the following day the death toll was 10 adults and six children. The nearby Aluminium Corporation factory was seriously flooded but the 200 or so workers there were all successfully rescued. The death toll might have been higher had not most of the villagers been attending a cinema show in the community hall on higher ground.
Stanley Taylor was at a Scouts meeting when the flood hit his family home. He died trying in vain to rescue his wife and infant daughter from the wreckage. Their grave is in the Great Orme cemetery.
The disaster prompted Parliament to legislate for better safety standards at reservoirs. The Reservoirs (Safety Provisions) Act of 1930 included regulations about maintenance of old dams, as well as construction of new ones. This was a belated to response to many dam failures in Britain, including one which killed 12 people in South Wales in 1875.
A memorial walk was created in the boulder field in 2004. Some of the boulders brought down by the torrent are estimated to weigh over 500 tons.

Dolgarrog Dam Disaster, Memorial Walk
On 2nd November 1925, the failure of two dams caused a flood that swamped the village of Dolgarrog, killing 16 people, including 6 children. The disaster was started by the failure of the Eigiau Dam, a gravity dam owned by the Aluminium Corporation. The water released from the reservoir flooded downstream, and overtopped the Coedty Dam, an embankment dam. This dam also subsequently failed releasing millions of gallons of water and thousands of tons of Ice Age boulders down a narrow gorge onto the village.
Many more villagers could have been killed had they not been in the local assembly rooms watching a film that night.
The disaster at Dolgarrog led the British parliament to pass the Reservoirs (Safety Provisions) Act in 1930 that introduced laws on the safety of reservoirs. This has since been updated, and the current one is the Reservoirs Act, 1975.
In 2004 a £60,000 memorial trail was created, explaining the tragic story to walkers. The trail takes visitors to where the boulders from the damaged dam reside. The project was opened by the last survivor of the dam disaster, Fred Brown, who on that night lost his mother and his younger sister.
Major refurbishment works were carried out to the memorial walk in 2017 - The site is located next to the B5106 Conway Road close to Surf Snowdonia.
