Doling monastery in West Sikkim's Ravangla
Doling Monastery is located on a small hillock, about 6 kms southward from Rabongla bazaar. Lama Rigdzin Longyang founded this monastery in the earth-dog year of 12th Rabjung cycle year corresponding to 1718. A.D.
The Mongol ruler Junggar’s invasion of Tibet in 1717 - 1718. A.D. led to the persecution of Nyingmapa Sect and in this terror- stricken situation, some Nyingmapa Saints left Tibet and took asylum in the southern hidden lands.

In the same year, Lama Dorjelingpa and his son Rigdzin Longyang also left Tibet and entered Sikkim. It is said that many years before, the son Rigdzin Longyang had obtained a prediction from Chhogyal Terdag Lingpa (1646-1714) about his future and he realized that the time had come for him to proceed to this hidden land. Thereafter, they entered Demojong with the help of the clues prescribed in the prediction letter and reached the present site, where they had built a small Hermitage and practiced ritual for some months.
Shortly after, Dorjelingpa went back to Tibet, his son Lama Rigdzin Longyang started building a small monastery. At the time of its completion, his father arrived back from Tibet, consecrated the monastery, and thereby composed a prayer manual to worship local Guardian Spirits while instructing to his son to foster his lineage. However, Dorjelingpa stayed in Sikkim for a short period and proceeded to Bumthang (Bhutan) where, he had sent one of his younger son for a spiritual mission.
As per written record of the Lama Jigme Pawo (1682-1729), Dorjelingpa and his son came to Sangag Choling Monastery in west Sikkim and met with Lama Jigme Pawo, who at the time became regent to the minor Gyurmed Namgyal (1707-1734) the Fourth Consecrated Ruler. There are many sacred objects of worship in its premises; such as a footprint of Khangchhen Dzonga’s Horse, which was laid on the rock during confrontation with Lama Dorje Lingpa and Deity Khangchhen Dzonga. It is said that Lama Dorje Lingpa called an assembly of all the local Guardian Deities after consecration of the Gonpa but Deity Khangchen Dzonga took it lightly as he is highly dignified Deity came one day late to Dorje lingpa’s command. By the time Khangchen Dzonga reached Doling the registration ceremony was over.
The deity was infuriated when his name was not registered in the list of Doling Guardian Deities and demonstrated his power by leaving a footprint of his horse on a small rock located outside the gate. At the same time, Dorjelingpa also laid his footprint on the rock in counter to Khangchhen Dzonga’s feat. Seeing this the Khangchen Dzonga apologized for his late coming and pleaded him to include his name in the list to keep his dignity. The lamas preserve them until to this day and the stone bearing the footprint of Dorje lingpa has permanantly installed on the inner wall of the Manilhakhang along with the images of the Manjushri, Vajra pani and Dorjelingpa carved on stone slabs by Dorjelingpa himself.
Due to frequent earthquake damages to the structure the monastery had been rebuilt in 1840, 1920 and finally in 1984. The monastery functions all the major festivals. Today the descendants of Lama Rigdzin Longyang are still exist and taking care of this sacred monastery. The monastery follows Nyingmapa of Kadue Chokyi Gyatso of eastern Treasure.

New Ralang Monastery in West Sikkim's Ravangla / Maenam region
Astonishing Ralang Monastery in Ravangla Town, Sikkim, northeastern India. The Buddhist monks are cleaning the Ralang Monastery, the monks carries water from pond to wash the floor of monastery.
Ralang Monastery portrays the true spiritual side of Sikkimese people. Ralang Monastery is a Buddhist monastery of the Kagyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism in southern Sikkim, northeastern India. According to legend, Ralang was built after the fourth Chogyal came back from his pilgrimage when the 12th Karmapa performed the Rabney (blessing). He threw grains from his residence in Tsurphu Monastery in Tibet and where the grains fell, eventually, became the site for the Ralang Monastery.
A new monastery of Palchen Choeling Monastic Institute” came up in the year 1995. It was constructed by the XIIth Gyaltsab Rimpoche who is regarded amongst the four regents of the Kagyu sect. Despite its recent construction, the monastery structure proves that meticulous care has been undertaken to maintain the authentic Tibetan architecture.

Bon Monastery in Sikkim - the Bonpo people came from Tibet
The Bon monastery at Kewzing, the only one of its kind in Sikkim was established in the latter half of 1980s and is a symbol of the determination of a community of people at Kewzing to preserve their religious traditions. Until Buddhism found its way from India in the 7th century, the Bon religion was the religion of Tibet. The belief in an Almighty God and in gods, spirits and demons living in nature belongs to the ancient elements of it.
An interesting fact is that there are only two Bon monasteries in India; one in Himachal Pradesh and the other in the state of Sikkim. The monastery in Sikkim accommodates 20 monks to offer prayer in the main hall. The interior of the monastery is well decorated with fascinating paintings of Bon deities, Bon Demonical Buddha. The chanting of mantras, the drum beat and the blowing of conch in the morning and evening promises to revive the spiritualism within you.
The ancient roots of Bon religion derive from a profound respect for nature and emphasize the healing of physical and environmental as well as spiritual afflictions. The Bon tradition can be experienced in this sole bon lineage monastery of Sikkim.

Stakna monastery lies on the left bank of the river Indus
View of Stakna Monastery from the opposite bank of river Indus in Ladakh.
Stakna Monastery or Stakna Gompa is a Buddhist monastery of the Drugpa sect in Leh district, Ladakh, northern India, 21 or 25 kilometres from Leh on the left bank of the Indus River.
It was founded in the late 16th century by a Bhutanese scholar and saint, Chosje Jamyang Palkar. The name, literally meaning 'tiger's nose' was given because it was built on a hill shaped like a tiger's nose. Of note is a sacred Arya Avalokitesvara statue from Kamrup, Assam. Stakna has a residence of approximately 30 monks.
The Indus River, also called the Sindhū River in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, is one of the longest rivers in Asia. It flows through Pakistan, the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir and western Tibet. Originating in the Tibetan Plateau in the vicinity of Lake Mansarovar, the river runs a course through the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir, towards Gilgit-Baltistan and then flows in a southerly direction along the entire length of Pakistan to merge into the Arabian Sea near the port city of Karachi in Sindh. The total length of the river is 3,180 km (1,980 mi). It is Pakistan's longest river.
The river has a total drainage area exceeding 1,165,000 km2 (450,000 sq mi). Its estimated annual flow stands at around 207 km3 (50 cu mi), making it the twenty-first largest river in the world in terms of annual flow. The Zanskar is its left bank tributary in Ladakh. In the plains, its left bank tributary is the Chenab which itself has four major tributaries, namely, the Jhelum, the Ravi, the Beas and the Sutlej. Its principal right bank tributaries are the Shyok, the Gilgit, the Kabul, the Gomal and the Kurram. Beginning in a mountain spring and fed with glaciers and rivers in the Himalayas, the river supports ecosystems of temperate forests, plains and arid countryside.

The Sacred Chants of Tibet !
This is a small clip about Lama Norboo Chosphel, the head abbot at the Jarong Monastery in South Western Tibet, reciting his prayers to the accompaniment of his ornate prayer wheel. The detached serenity on the face of the monk is almost palpable.
This monastery is believed to have been built at the site where the great Buddhist Siddha 'Padmasambhava,' also known locally as 'Guru Rimpochey'- the great incarnated teacher, vanquished a local demon king.
This is also the site of the Hindu 'Tirthapuri,' where the mighty fire demon of yore 'Bhasmasura' met his nemesis and was reduced to ashes, when he tried to attack Lord Shiva. The supreme deity in the Hindu pantheon.
Behind the Lama, one can also see the sacred Mahayanic scriptures of the Kangyur stacked against the wall.
(Video shot by Raahul Ogra, Founder Mystic Himalayan Trails, in August 2012)
The background score is borrowed from the movie 'Himalaya' by Eric Valli.
