Dolmen des Fades - ancient megaliths in France
Dolmen des Fades is a the largest series of megaliths in France. This dolmen is located in southern France, near Beziers in the department of Aude, near the village of Pépieux. I was looking for some other dolmens in the area and when that didn’t work, I drove to this one, seeing that it was even on Google Maps! This ancient site is from 5,000 years ago! (site from 3000 BC - Before Christ, our Saviour)
We can read this about the Dolmen des Fades, which in the local old language of Occitan means, Morrel de las Fadas” or Slope of the Fairies.” Isn’t that curious:
“To describe the memorial, we quote Jean Guilaine, a professor at the College of France. This large rectangular building, 24m in size, built in blocks of different rocks (limestone, gray sandstone, red sandstone), has a long corridor of alternating pillars and drystone, anteroom with capstone and finally a more eroded terminal cella. Two doors realized by sculpted stone slabs that had to separate the interior space. Built at the end of the Neolithic period (around 3000 BC), the dolmen was still in use at the time of the copper era (à campaniforme) and at the beginning of the Bronze age. The Dolmen des Fades is the biggest dolmen in the south of France”. Source:
In French, some call this site, “Le dolmen Lo Morrel dos Fados” The wiki in French also claims that this is the largest dolmenic tomb in the south of France ands this fact as well, “It is also called Palet de Roland because Roland , the nephew of Charlemagne , would have left the imprint of his hand. Another Minervois dolmen is also called Palet de Roland: it is the dolmen of the Old Man or the Jargantière in the town of Villeneuve-Minervois.”

If you’re down on holiday near Beziers, Narbonne or Agde in France, I would highly recommend stopping by this historical site and take a trip back in time. On my things to do list, for sure. Dolmen des Fades
Gothic Church of PEPIEUX, France - 14th Century
Stopped off at the gothic church in PEPIEUX on the way back from the faires dolmen just down the way out in the vineyards. This church, like the dolmen, has an interesting legend. Not about fires, but a demon that was turned into a stone frog as punishment. The French name of the church in PEPIEUX is Église Saint-Étienne de Pépieux.
In PEPIEUX you will find a 14th century southern gothic church with a stoup in Caunes marble where a frog sits in state: legend has it that the devil, having disrupted the sermon of some holy priest, was turned into a stone frog and condemned to finish his days in the stoup (open year round from 9am to 6pm). In a pine wood a few kilometres from the heart of the village, there is the famous “Dolmen des Fades” (the Fairies’ Dolmen) which is the largest dolmen grave in the south of France (24 m long)!
