Whales Close up Cork Coast Ireland. Irish Whale and Dolphin Group Research Trip. karl grabe
Irish Whale and Dolphin Group Fin Whale Research trip in July of 2011 of the Cork Coast, Ireland.
Colin Barnes's Holly Jo was allowed to get much closer to the whales than normal as this was a research trip.
Conor (GMIT/IWDG) is seen shooting special darts with a cross-bow at surfacing 60+ ton Fin whales to get skin samples for analysis. Colin, the skipper, had to carefully bring the boat close enough. The operation was supervised by a park ranger from the NPWS.ie.

Filming humpback whales off Ireland's south coast with Cork Whale Watch
Colin Barnes of Cork Whale Watch is regularly asked to collaborate on both Irish and UK natural history productions. This extract is from Living the Wildlife, Series II, episode 3, presented by Colin Stafford Johnson, and aired on RTE in 2009.
To book your trip out with Colin Barnes off Ireland's South Coast visit the Cork Whale Watch Website on corkwhalewatch.com or join us on Facebook at www,facebook.com/corkwhalewatch.
Filming was carried out using the MV Holly Jo along the Cork coast, extending into Co. Waterford. It was a long way from our home port in West Cork, but these are the lengths we have to be prepared to go to in order to capture the best film footage.
This programme showcased the conservation research of the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group iwdg.ie which includes both Photo- Identification studies and acoustic monitoring of the humpback and fin whales along the Irish South coast.

Humpback Whale Breaching, Dec 1st 2013, Sherkin Island, West Cork, Ireland.
On Sunday 1st December 2013 I was out with on a whale watching trip with Sherkin Sea Ventures, which was skippered by Charlie Green.
At 3.15pm we arrived at an area where we spotted one Humpback Whale and some Fin Whales, about 2 miles south of Sherkin Island, West Cork in Ireland, which isn't far from the village of Baltimore.
To the great surprise and delight of those on board our boat the whale performed two breaches. The first breach occurred at 3.28pm and the second occurred one minute later at 3.29pm. I was lucky to be able to capture the second breach on camera.
Behind the breaching whale is Sherkin Island.
I made this video from the sequence of photos I took of this rare event in Irish waters.
The breach itself only lasted 2 to 3 seconds but I've slowed the video down and repeated the breach for a better visual effect.
The Humpback Whale has been recorded as visiting Irish waters in the past, according to the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group's Database, and has been catalogued as HBIRL 6.

Whale Watching Afternoon in Westcork
A beautiful afternoon in Baltimore, Ireland and a wonderful Whale Watching Trip.
We were lucky to be first accompanied by a Dolphin, whom also was waiting for us when we came back to the harbour. While being out on the sea, we were lucky to see a Basking Shark coming by really close and there was a small family of Minke whales, unfortunately they wouldn't come very close. To finish the tour off, we had a couple of seals expressing interest in what the strange humans are doing there.
This was the first full Video from shot to cut and edit that I have done - any Feedback is much appreciated.
Camera: GoPro Hero 3 Black
Cut and Edit: Sony Movie Studio Platinum

The lens got smeared with sunscreen so I am afraid the quality is poor.
