Best Whale Watching in Western Australia
The best whale watching in Western Australia was in perfect demonstration today as Flinders Bay and her visiting Humpbacks showed us the sensational Language of the Whales™! The morning was busy as we began our first interaction within moments of departing the Augusta Boat Harbour with a very relaxed juvenile. Leaving him to continue his Sunday morning sleep in we approached a pod of three young adults who were being rather proactive in their chasing across the bay. A young male had approached the two and it didn't appear that they really wanted his company so tried to allow for some speed to make their new tail disappear. Approaching the abalone farm it seemed to work as a good distraction and it wasn't long before three became two once again and they all settled back into the migration movement. Large adults surged past and we smiled to see the alliance pod of male Bottlenose Dolphins back in the bay again and causing havoc with the Humpbacks.
Racing around them at full speed the six or so Humpbacks seemed slightly confused as to which way was best to go, should they follow the other Humpbacks or hang out with the dolphins? Some went left and a few went right as the Bottlenose Dolphins spent a bit of time with us zooming around the bow and stern. Some of the best whale watching in Western Australia can be found in Augusta during this time of year as the enormous male Humpbacks display in incredible fashion their strength and today we witnessed the perfect example. Two mature males launched into a full surface active display of breaching, head lunging and unified pec slapping with perfect timing. Continuing to breach towards our vessel we could sight a very unique marking on the pectoral fin of one individual that looked exactly like a lighting strike. Very cool indeed and it wasn't long before they had attracted the attention of another large individual and began to socialise together. Forming a bachelor pod they were now ready to find a lovely lady to impress.
Whale Watching Busselton
Some of our favourite moments from today's encounter... storm clouds loomed but our gentle giants brought the sunshine to Geographe Bay⛅
We had so many Humpbacks surrounding us it was like being in a Humpback aquarium! These gorgeous calves were communicating to each other with one calf in particular putting on an incredible performance of repeated head lunging, breaching, peduncle slaps and tail slaps???? With 3 calves and 8 adult Humpbacks surrounding us and coming over to say hello within one foot of the boat, it was an incredible experience and one of our best encounters of the season.

Should you go whale watching in Perth?
You are pondering over this giant question – should you go whale watching in Perth? After all, watching this giant gorgeous animal up close is such a cool and YOLO thing to do. But I know your fear. “What if I can’t get to see the whales? What if the yacht stays 2km away from the whale, and all I can catch is just a glimpse of the whale tail? Will I end up wasting my time and money?”
I had the exact same doubts before. In the past, when I went for this kind of animal watching boat tour in other countries like Japan, I was so disappointed as I never got to see the animals from a near distance. That was why I was quite skeptical about catching a good view when my family decided to go for whale watching in Perth. Nevertheless, we went ahead booking our trip with All Sea Charters as it has a lot of good reviews online. Still, I wasn’t convinced.
Whale Watching In Perth – the Candid Experience
We opted for the morning tour which started at 945am. The first 45 minutes was spent traveling out to the deep water and searching for whales. Occasionally, some people spotted sights of dolphins and got everyone excited. You need to be really quick catching the sights of these agile creatures. But the rest of the time, all you could see was just the bright sun and glittering sea.
Just as the search seemed endlessly long, the yacht suddenly came to a halt. Two kids suddenly shouted: “The whales are there!”
The next second, I saw the giant tail flapping the water before creating some big splashes. I then saw two big patches of giant green florescent beneath the sea water. “We got two Humpback whales with us. The green florescent patches are the reflections of their white bellies.”
Wow! I didn’t expect meeting one, but now we got 2 whales swimming and playing around us. How lucky! The amazing part was, they were really close to us, sometimes just within 5 meters away.
Apparently, whale watching is popular south of Perth waters because it is an important rest area for southward migrating humpback whales between September to late November, when they can be seen in the area with great regularity.
Our tour guide Deanna shared with us that the Humpback whales were migrating back to Antarctica. During the migration process, they will not eat anything as they have fed themselves with enough food before the departure. During the journey, they will surface to the water to breath some fresh air because they are mammals after all. But they can hold their breath for 40 minutes under water. How amazing!
If you want to get a clear view of the whales, come to the front of the yacht, where you can enjoy unobstructed views of the gorgeous creatures. Hold on tight when you are in front and enjoy the view!
For the next 30 minutes, I caught the two whales playing with each other numerous times, revealing their gorgeous bodies right in front of my eyes. I also learnt so much from my guide Deanna. She is so passionate about educating the people about these creatures and how we can better protect them.
Whale Watching In Perth – Extra Tips for a Greater Experience
Bring extra layers of clothes
Because we went there during the middle of the winter, the wind became really cold and strong when the yacht started sailing. So do bring extra layer of clothes to keep yourself warm.
Get outside for fresh air if you experience sea sick
Of course, you can choose to keep warm by staying inside the yacht cabin. But if you are not very used to the sea, you can get motion sickness very easily. That’s why I suggest you to stay outside for some fresh air and wear extra layers to keep warm.
All in all, I had such a wonderful time during the tour. I didn’t have a high expectation at first, but the whole experience totally surpassed my expectation. So don’t need to hesitate about whether you should go whale watching in Perth. Go for it and you will love it!

Humpbacks Arrive in Busselton
A magic spring morning with perfect conditions today and our first encounter was with a mother and calf Bottlenose Dolphin and shortly after we found the rest of the family pod. They were in a very focused mode working fast and efficiently, herding the fish they had found closer together for a Saturday morning brunch! A bit further out we met a very curious juvenile Humpback whale who was all on his own and very interested in having a bit of a chat and social time with us????
Juvenile Humpbacks are some of the very first arrivals that we see in Geographe Bay as the southern Humpback migration begins. These younger whales are very curious often travelling on their own or with another whale of similar size and age. Our new found friend today was very interested in checking the whole boat from bow to stern and also had fun introducing himself to our guests on the back duckboards... incredibly special to be water level with the Dinosaurs of The Deep©

Juvenile Humpbacks Busselton
After a very quiet start to the morning we met two juvenile Humpback whales who had teamed up as pod of two for better protection and company until a few more Humpbacks arrive in Geographe Bay. They were both very curious and popped up right on our bow to say hello to everyone and check things out. They will be waiting on the arrival of more Humpbacks before continuing their journey south to the Antarctic feeding grounds????????
Destination WA - Swan River Dolphin Watch
If there were one thing that defines Perth as one of the world's most beautiful city's it has to be the mighty swan and canning river systems that divide the city north and south. The Swan River which admittedly has suffered at times as our population has boomed remains healthy and rich in life from tiny prawns on the bottom to majestic dolphins moving up and down the system.

Whale Watch Western Australia Season 2016
Summer is here and our wonderful whales are now enjoying a long awaited meal in the cool and nutrient rich waters of Antarctica. They will spend the next few months feeding and regaining their strength before they return once again along the West Australian coastline to complete another incredible migration. This season we have had the privilege of meeting hundreds of whales and each interaction created long lasting memories that will be treasured for a lifetime. It is hard to put into words the incredible affect these magnificent creatures have on everyone that meets them and the joy they bring to so many lives.
Although we will miss our friends until they return again, we feel very pleased in knowing that there are currently around 2-3,000 new Humpbacks calves experiencing their very first time in Antarctica and all whales who have returned are relishing a very well earned feed and replenishing those hungry tummies! The migration they undertake every year is an estimated 13,000 kilometre long journey that was made all the more challenging this season with a very long lasting winter and spring. Once again they made a successful journey back to the kitchen fridge and development grounds of their new calves and just as one journey ends the preparation for the next one begins.
This season was filled with many once in a lifetime moments, such as meeting Pearl the White Southern Right Whale Calf and little Leeuwi the Humpback calf born in Flinders Bay in late June who found a way to survive when all odds were against him. Curious Minke whales in Geographe Bay and even a family pod of Pygmy Blue Whales including her young calf were sightings we will treasure. We have compiled just a few of our favourite images and moments from this season that we hope you enjoy.
We would like to thank all of our guests and local communities for your support and also your love and admiration for your whales! Almost having lost our West Australian Whales many years ago it was the desire to protect these Dinosaurs of The Deep™ that has allowed them to regain strength in their populations and continue to bring joy to the lives of thousands of people each year. We are the fortunate ones who have the privilege of taking you to meet them and have the responsibility to teach every person who steps aboard Whale Watch Western Australia everything they have ever wanted to know about The Language of The Whales and for that we are forever grateful...see you next year!❤️????
