swimming with dolphins 2 - Isla Mujeres Mexico
I grew up watching Flipper on TV so having a dolphin encounter was high on my bucket list, I guess by the number of people doing dolphin encounters from around the I am not the only one.
There are dolphin swim programs through out Mexico and the Caribbean, we swam with dolphins in Jamaica at Dolphin Cove, been there done that, next I would love to encounter a large pod of dolphins in the wild.
ISLA MUJERES is BEAUTIFUL!!
Today we ate ceviche at Isla Mujeres in gorgeous turquoise waters & got within INCHES of huge Whale Sharks!

What a day this was! Lately, we've been wanting to do more tours in the Cancun area, so we got together with My Trish Advisor to set up a bucket list tour - Swimming with Whale Sharks!! To book your tour with Trish, head on over to
The tour starts in Cancun where you board a boat that takes you for a short boat ride over to Isla Mujeres. The relatively-calm ride is breathtaking with water consisting of shades of blue, green, and turquoise. AMAZING!!
If you're wondering what to do in Cancun, Mexico, this is definitely a tour that's worth considering. But before you book it, you should be aware that it does come with some drawbacks... Depending on where they're feeding at the time, it can be a very long boat ride out to see the whale sharks. For us, it was an hour and 20 minutes each way. Additionally, don't expect to be the only boat out there - this is a very popular tour and many people are trying to have the same experience. Unfortunately, that also means that you won't have a lot of time to swim with the whale sharks since everybody has to take turns.
With that said and expectations tempered, this is one once-in-a-lifetime experience! Being in the water with the worlds biggest sharks is incredible!
If you're visiting Mexico, you also MUST check out the beautiful Isla Mujeres! It's crystal clear water and soft sand beaches (free of seaweed, I might add) are a dream! This tour killed two birds with one stone...and it almost killed Maddie too. Not actually, but she did get very seasick. A good reminder to take Dramamine!
After the whale shark experience, we stopped by Isla Mujeres for a little while - our first time at the beautiful island. Our guides whipped up some tasty ceviche and we enjoyed the motion-free water and soft sand - Maddie was especially relieved!
We're going to have to come back to Isla Mujeres very soon. Since it's so close to Cancun and our home in Puerto Morelos, it's a really easy day trip for us.

G I A N T S - Whale sharks of Isla Mujeres
The Yucatan peninsula is one of the busiest tourist destinations in the world and every year just offshore from Cancun, the largest fish in the ocean aggregates in vast numbers to feed.
This very special aggregation is one of only a handful of such known sites where whale sharks aggregate and it has turned into a valuable ecotourism contribution to the local economy.

Swim with dolphins in Cancun (Isla mujeres)
Swim with dolphins in Cancun (Isla mujeres)
Spend a day on the nearby island of Isla Mujeres with Dolphin Discovery and enjoy the Experience of a Lifetime, of swimming with dolphins in the ocean in one of the most beautiful parks in the world.
Located a short boat ride from Cancun, Isla Mujeres is the perfect day trip. The island is famous for its transparent water, swimming with dolphins, Playa Norte (voted one of the best 10 beaches in the world) and for Garrafon National Park.
Of all of Dolphin Discovery's Discoveries interactive programs the Royal Swim is the premier program. During the Royal Swim Program you will enjoy swimming with the dolphins and being able to perform amazing behaviors with these dolphins that are both fun and dynamic such as the dorsal town, foot push, free time, games, bar jump, hand target, kiss, hug, and dancing.
Each of these behaviors has been designed to bring you closer to dolphins than you ever dreamed possible. During the dorsal tow the dolphins will tow you through the water at high speeds. With freetime you will be able to play freely with them. The more active you are the more the dolphins will respond to you. The footpush is a behavior like no other in the world. In this behavior a dolphin pushes your feet and sends you flying across the water at twenty miles per hour. Lets think about that statement again. You have a dolphin that swims over to you, places his nose on the base of your feet and before you know it you are gliding across the water. It literally looks and feels like you are running on water.
Other behaviors that make for unforgettable foto opportunities include the dolphin kiss or the hug. Holding the dolphin in your arms for the hug, and looking into a dolphins eyes is surreal because it is a moment that you will not forget.
Dolphin Discovery also prides itself on taking great care of its dolphins and the trainers are dedicated experts who take the time to teach and educate you about these amazing mammals.
This stellar program and day is The Experience of Lifetime.

Whale Shark Dive - Isla Mujeres, Mexico
Being dumped into the ocean with these big guys was quite an experience and worth the two hour boat ride in choppy waters. They are truly amazing, gentle, giants.
Whale Sharks - Isla Mujeres, Mexico
Lots of whale sharks at Isla Mujeres on July 6, 2012. There were too many to count, easily 100+ sharks!! Swimming alongside these creatures was truly magnificent, you're completely dwarfed by their enormous size and they move with a stunning grace! Words cannot describe how incredible this encounter was! Whale sharks are the largest fish on the planet and eat microscopic plankton -- which is why (it's believed) they come to Isla Mujeres in such large numbers this time of year, there's a huge plankton bloom. I stayed in Cozumel and scuba dived at least 3 dives a day for 2 weeks, including some Cenote dives on the mainland, and this was easily the highlight of my trip. If you're in the area when these sharks are around, you seriously owe it to yourself to go see them!! They are absolutely unbelievable!
