Moorea Dolphin and whales expedition – Moorea island activities
Location
Moorea Dolphin Expedition are located on the Coco Beach jetty, right next to the Intercontinental Hotel, in the district of Haapiti, on the northwestern tip of the island. It is advisable to contact them by phone or email.
Dolphins
Did you know that Spinner Dolphins are the only species to perform spiraled twists? Luckily, these amazing creatures are permanent residents of the island of Moorea. They are to be found in the lagoon and the passes in the morning, and in the open ocean in the afternoon. They are easy to approach and observe, and they just love to show off their acrobatic skills.
Other species can sometimes be observed in the ocean around Moorea, such as the graceful Steno dolphins, and the impressive pilot whales.
Whales
From mid-July to early November, humpback whales spend the austral winter in the warm waters surrounding Polynesian islands, safe from predators. These gentle giants are easy to observe, and if the conditions are right, it is even possible to swim near them and watch them real close.
Females are usually with their young. Males obviously do their utmost to seduce them... by singing. The whale's song is one of the wonders of nature, and Moorea Dolphin Expedition's boat is equipped with a hydrophone, so you can enjoy the full experience. An experience you are unlikely to forget.
The lagoon
At the end of the tour, the boat stops inside the lagoon, on a beautiful sandbank where you can swim and observe the rich underwater wildlife. A group of stingrays are permanent residents, there are plenty of colorful tropical fish, and even friendly and shy blacktip sharks.
Throughout the tour, you will be absolutely safe under the competent supervision of Moorea Dolphin Expedition's experienced captain and crew. Relax, and enjoy your day.
Private tours with a la carte services are available upon request.

Moorea Dolphin Expedition – Moorea
Situation

Swimming with Humpback whales in Moorea, French Polynesia
As an underwater photographer, I was excited to head to the warm waters of Moorea, in French Polynesia. I spent 6 days in the water on a tour in late September to the start of October. The water was warm, the days sunny, and the encounters unforgettable.
Moorea is a dreamy island of paradise. Beautiful lagoons surrounding the island, majestic mountains, and stunning views in every direction. Why Moorea? To swim and photograph humpback whales underwater!
This was my second time swimming with humpback whales, after my 2016 trip to Tonga had me hooked. Meeting a whale in the water is a really special and humbling experience. It's something that I personally can't really put into words.
In fact, our first day on the water had us meet a 'singer'. We floated in the water near a male humpback whale, who was suspended in the water below us, singing his song. The unique song vibrated through the water and our bodies.
That's what it's like meeting a humpback underwater. Their presence is like a song that fills you up - that vibrates through your veins.
When I booked this trip to French Polynesia, one of my main goals was to produce some behind-the-scenes content for my business and website. I was super lucky to be able to use extra drone and underwater footage by Louise Nance and Kate Wakeman in this video too (many thanks!!).
I journeyed to French Polynesia for this trip, to experience a different place, a new experience, and to see another part of the world. Both Moorea and Tonga are beautiful places in their own way, and have both offered unique experiences.
So please, enjoy a quick look at what it is like to swim with whales, and if you're ever lucky enough to do it yourself, be careful - it might just change your life.

A big thanks to additional Drone and Underwater footage provided by Louise Nance and Kate Wakeman.
Swimming with Humpbacks in Moorea
Best. Family. Trip. Ever! The Chu family (Bryan, Lisa, Jenny, Alex, Mary and Derek) booked a full boat with Bluewater Dive Travel for one week of snorkeling with humpbacks, and it was insanely good. Four out of five days on the water we were in the water multiple times, with phenomenal encounters with a curious juvenile, friendly babies, tranquil moms, and groups of adults. We even got to see a baby nursing, as well as pilot whales, rough-toothed dolphins, and oceanic white-tip sharks. It was truly the trip of a lifetime. We will never forget this, and already are starting to think about going back!

Snorkelling with the whale in Moorea
French Polynesia, October 2019 - Moorea and Tahiti
We spent 12 days on the water, searching for whales, dolphins, sharks and whatever we could find. We were quite successful and we had the opportunity to dive and snorkel with all types of fantastic creatures, both large and small. Special thanks to our friends, Gerry and Nancy, our trusted travel buddies, who made this trip even more incredible.
A big shout out to Nico and Patrick of Tahiti Shark Expeditions, who made all this possible. Thanks for your diligence and professionalism.

Sequences of footage from Mr. Patea Alexandre. Living in Moorea, he has now experience, several time, what most of us dream of doing. Touching and swimming with whales and playing with dolphins in the ocean near the island of Moorea in French Polynesia. His knowledge of whale migration made him a renown figure around the island.
