Whale watching Puerto Lopez - Isla de la Plata - Ecuador
Ballenas Jorobadas, Whale Watching, Puerto López, Manabí, Ecuador
Puerto López is located in the Province of Manabí, just North of Olón, Province of Santa Elena. It is a fishermen coastal town from where you can book a whale-watching tour or a tour to Isla de La Plata with whale-watching along the way. The prices range from $25 to $40 in boats equipped with radio, life vests and a licensed captain and tour guide. There are many tour agencies to choose from.
The Humpback Whales Watching season run from June through September. They are 40 – 50 feet long weighing 30-50 tons. They are black or grey with a white underside, and they have huge, mottled white flippers with rough edges that are up to one-third of its body length; these are the largest flippers of any whale long flippers. There are distinctive patches of white on underside of the tail. These markings are unique to each individual whale, like a fingerprint, they are also known as flukes.
Humpbacks are very acrobatic, often breaching high out of the water and then slapping the water as they come back down. Humpbacks also stick their tail out of the water into the air, swing it around, and then slap it on the water's surface; this is called lobtailing. It makes a very loud sound. The meaning or purpose of lobtailing is unknown, but may be done as a warning to the rest of the pod.
Humpback whales live at the surface of the ocean, both in the open ocean and shallow coastline waters. When not migrating, they prefer shallow waters. They migrate from warm tropical waters where they breed and calve to arctic waters where they eat.
HUMPBACK WHALE MIGRATION
Winter: warm, low latitude tropical waters (breed and give birth)
Spring/Summer/Autumn: cooler, high latitude polar waters (feed)
Most humpback whales make mammoth journeys every year between their feeding and breeding sites. Because seasons are reversed either side of the equator, Northern and Southern Hemisphere populations of humpbacks probably never meet; those in the north travel towards their breeding grounds in tropical waters as those in the south are travelling towards the pole to feed, and vice versa.
The Humpback Whales Watching season off the coast of Ecuador run from June through September, which means that they belong to the Southern Hemisphere population as during these months is winter in the Southern Hemisphere. They migrate back to the cold polar waters in the South, to their feeding grounds in Antarctica, to feed during the months of December through February, the summer season in the Southern Hemisphere.
Humpbacks migrate at 3-9 mph (4.8-14 kph). They have incredible powers of endurance, traveling over 3,100 miles (5000 km) during each seasonal migration with almost no rest along the way. During migrations, they cover over 1,000 miles per month, which means that the migration takes around 3 months. During such a long journey, they rest and socialize along the way. However, not all members of the population will travel together. The first to arrive are groups of older juveniles, followed by mature males and then by mothers and calves.

The main industries include fishing and ecotourism. The street closest to the beach has many restaurants, cabanas that provide drinks, and some nightclubs.

Whale watching is popular from mid-June to October and tours can be booked in town. At this time of year the huge humpback whales mate and the odds of spotting whales are very good. Humpback whales mate behind Salango Island, this island is in the community Salango.
40 kilometres offshore is Isla de la Plata (named from its history as a pirate hideout, the Island of the Silver), also referred to as The Poor Man's Galapagos.[There some species that also inhabit the Galapagos like the blue and red-footed booby, nazca booby, frigatebirds, albatross, pelican and other seabirds that are nesting in colonies can be found. The island is surrounded by coral reef and snorkeling is a popular activity. On the boat ride from Puerto Lopez to the island pods of dolphins can often be seen.
