Killer whales attack Heaviside's dolphin in Walvis Bay, Namibia
Sea Search Africa would like to share this fantastic sighting from our Namibian Dolphin Project field team made on 10 March 2018.
In over 600 surveys in Walvis bay over 10 years, we have had only one other sighting of killer whales. Seeing a predation event like this was particularly special.

The Namibian Dolphin Project was started in 2008 and has grown from strength to strength since then.
Little is known about Namibia’s cetaceans and much of the data that exist of decades old. research focusses on gathering baseline population level data, including abundance, behavior and distribution of marine mammals and turtles to assess their conservation status.

Seal climbs on our boat during a dolphin cruise in Walvis Bay, Namibia
In March 2013, we went on a dolphin cruise through an agent called Mola Mola, operating from Walvis Bay harbour in Namibia. This seal is a regular during these cruises and we got a nice personal experience with him. It was truly amazing...
This little seal swam next to our boat for quite some time afterwards (

I went to Wisconsin Bay today. I go out into the sea with a cool sea breeze. Suddenly a pelican descends from the sky and sits down. Someone is afraid, and someone is engaged in commemorative photo shoots. What is that far-flung group? Seals all around. Nowadays it is a period of mating and the fighting is fierce. On the other hand, seals in the sea are in the midst of sari. One of the seals is chasing quickly. I just got on the boat. I told you before, but now we are on the ship with very lovely animals. I can come one or two more later. The seal looks pretty to give me something to eat. People do not know how to leave a cute side. In the middle of the sea, the captain looks for something. Can I see the dolphins? Let's hope for that. Yesterday I saw a dolphin. Yesterday? Yes, it's natural. I can not see it every day. This is not an aquarium. Not only the captain, but everyone's gaze goes to the sea. At that time, the appearance of the dolphins was slightly over the surface of the water. It was a short moment, but the first encounter with wild dolphins was a wonderful experience.

Beached Whale Carcass Torn Apart By Locals
Beached Whale Torn Apart By Locals
SUBSCRIBE: We upload a new incredible video every weekday. Subscribe to our YouTube channel so you don't miss out:
Locals struggle to dispose of a rotting whale carcass as it bakes in the hot African sun. The enormous mammal, which weighs 10 tonnes, was washed up on the beach of Amanzimtoti, a small coastal town south of the city of Durban, South Africa in early August. Waste management services arrived at the blood-stained beach to discover dozens of locals hacking into the humpback whale’s putrid body with machetes. The whale was left to rot on the beach, instead of towing it into the water or burying it in the sand.

Dolphin Research Project, Namibia
Q: So what are you up to with this project?
Barry McGovern, PHD Candidate and Intern Co-ordinator: We’re out here, we’re doing research on the two resident dolphin species here. The Heaviside's dolphins which we saw earlier and the much larger bottlenose dolphins. And we come out here collecting photo I.D data and behavioural data on the animals.
Q: What does a morning look like out on the bay?
B: It’s an early start! We have to beat the winds so we get up early and we launch about 6.30 or 7. Then we head out, we do a loop around the bay looking for the animals and once we find them we then switch to photo I.D and to data collection basically.
Q: What does a typical day look like for you as an intern?
Denise Martinkovich Intern: We usually spend a day looking for dolphins or other species like penguins, maybe seals or humpback whales. They’re kind of, if we’re lucky we will see them. On the other days we have typical office days where we work on our own tasks, like for example on photo ID where we look at the photos and compare the photos of dorsal fins of dolphins to find out whether the same dolphins are here from last year or whether they’re new dolphins, calves or anything. And, we usually have bird surveys where we look around the lagoon and look for birds, what kind of species of birds. We write down the numbers of them just to have an eye on the population usually the lesser and greater flamingos because they’re very common in the Walvis Bay Lagoon.
Q: Interns are involved in this project, volunteers are involved in this project; how do they benefit the program?
Barry: Yeah, well I mean they’re really essential to us because throughout the year we’re a basic small team and we can’t carry out too many surveys. We do, maybe, four a month and that’s about it. But, during the June, July, August intern season we have people who are working with us all the time so we’re out on the water maybe, you know if the weather permits, five or six times a week. We can’t do that without the interns so they’re actually an integral part of the project.
Whales dies at Namibian coast
Many whale are found In Namibian sea because of eco friendly environment of that country. But sometimes a whales mysterious dearth can be encountered sporadically along the coastal areas of Namibia. In 2018 alone three dearth were recorded. Whether it's natural or not, that remain mysterious.
