Duck Key in the Florida Keys: A Lively Family and Fishing Vacation
Surprise, surprise, there is a hot vacation destination midway between Miami and Key West. One and a half hours from the heart of Miami, there's a sign for Duck Key on Route 1, the Overseas Highway, before it hits the world-famous Seven Mile Bridge. Take the left turn. The road leads to a quiet but developed archipelago anchored by the family-friendly Hawks Cay Resort.
A Stellar Resort's Humble Beginnings
In the 1820s and 1830s, Duck Key was the site of a salt manufacturing operation. In 1951, Bryan W. Newkirk, who had developed Coral Gables, purchased the island for about $47,000 and turned it into a 400-acre island community. With an airport 12 miles away in the city of Marathon, and Miami International Airport just 90 miles away, the possibilities became even more endless in 1952 when a wooden bridge connected Duck Key to highway U.S. 1. Newkirk made all the canals waterways that could flush with the tidal changes. He carved out five islands, Indies, Centre, Harbour, Plantation and Yacht Club islands, with 10 miles of paved roads and four decorative stone bridges. Newkirk's Indies Inn opened in 1960. In 1983, it was bought and became the Hawks Cay Resort.
A Fun Resort
From Miami, after the scenic drive on picturesque Route 1 that takes you through the Everglades, across historic fishing bridges and along the tranquil blue and green waters of the Atlantic Ocean and Florida Bay, you turn left at the 61-mile marker on to Duck Key and into the AAA Four-Diamond Award-winning Hawks Cay. You're greeted with an instant serenity by a resort that looks like a well-groomed country club. No traffic. A few people walk around the grounds, sauntering in and out of the 225 two- and three-bedroom tropical-styled, cream-colored villas and hotel rooms. When you check in at the main desk, you get a better sense of the property as families with kids seem to be the dominant presence. Across the lobby, out back, is a big pool. A clearer picture of what this self-contained haven offers vacationers, particularly families, comes into view: high-quality accommodations, loads of activities on an isle where you really can't get lost.
The heart of the property is the main pool where everyone gathers for swimming, scuba lessons, sun worshipping and the scene. Next to it is a well-conceived Saltwater Lagoon, with a man-made, circular beach. When the tide comes in, the lagoon is higher, when it leaves it is lower. This beach scene is an anomaly in the Keys; if you haven't been here, you might think the Keys' islands are laden with dazzling shorelines, but in fact there are precious few. Lots of vacationers arrive at Key West, anticipating a world-class beach, only to find there is none. Hawks Cay has that covered. Calmness on its beach. Shrieks and laughter at its main pool. Dead silence at his adults-only Tranquility Pool, where it's so quiet you could hear a mojito straw drop.
Stay Active. Or Not!
Dolphin Connection: Guests train, feed and swim with four Atlantic bottlenose dolphins that reside at Hawks Cay. It's a unique facility, the only one of its kind in the continental United States to offer free daily dolphin viewing. The viewings start at 10 a.m. and run every 90 minutes throughout the day. With a small teacher/vacationer ratio, kids can ask all the questions they want and not wait three minutes for an answer. There are only a few participants. No crowds in a gigantic theme park. This is an intimate experience.

????SHE FELL OUT OF THE HAMMOCK!???? | GEOCACHING IN THE FLORIDA KEYS | SEVEN MILE BRIDGE
Hunter fell out of the hammock!
We just went exploring in the Florida Keys, today. Dad and the kids went geocaching, we drove to the Seven Mile Bridge and walked on the old Seven Mile Bridge, drove a bit further down to Big Pine Key to look for Key Deer, and did a hike around an old rock quarry!
Seven Mile Bridge:
The Seven Mile Bridge is a famous bridge in the Florida Keys, in Monroe County, Florida, United States. It connects Knight's Key (part of the city of Marathon, Florida) in the Middle Keys to Little Duck Key in the Lower Keys. Among the longest bridges in existence when it was built, it is one of the bridges on Overseas Highway in the Keys, part of the 2,369 mile long US 1.
There are two bridges in this location. The modern bridge is open to vehicular traffic, whereas the older bridge is only open to pedestrians and cyclists. The older bridge, originally known as the Knights Key-Pigeon Key-Moser Channel-Pacet Channel Bridge, was constructed from 1909 to 1912 under the direction of Henry Flagler and Clarence S. Coe as part of the Florida East Coast Railway's Key West Extension, also known as the Overseas Railroad.
Bahia Honda State Park
Bahia Honda (meaning deep bay, in Spanish, locally pronounced: BAY-ah HON-da [ˈbeɪə 'hɒndə], also pronounced (Spanish): Bah-EE-ah OWN-dah [ba'ia 'onda]) is an island in the lower Florida Keys.
U.S. 1 (the Overseas Highway) crosses the key at approximately mile markers 36-38.5, between Ohio Key and Spanish Harbor Key 12 miles (19 km) west of Marathon, close to the west end of the Seven Mile Bridge.
The island is virtually uninhabited, being home to the 524-acre (2.12 km2) Bahia Honda State Park. Founded in 1961, the park occupies most of the island. The channel at the island's west end is one of the deepest natural channels in the Florida Keys.
Key Deer
The Key deer (Odocoileus virginianus clavium) is an endangered deer that lives only in the Florida Keys. It is a subspecies of the white-tailed deer (O. virginianus). It is the smallest North American deer.
This deer can be recognized by its characteristic size, smaller than all other white-tailed deer. Adult males (known as bucks) usually weigh 25–34 kg (55–75 lb) and stand about 76 cm (30 in) tall at the shoulder. Adult females (does) usually weigh between 20 and 29 kg (44 and 64 lb) and have an average height of 66 cm (26 in) at the shoulders. The deer is a reddish-brown to grey-brown in color. Antlers are grown by males and shed between February and March and regrown by June. When the antlers are growing, they have a white velvet coating. The species otherwise generally resembles other white-tailed deer in appearance.

Description: Robbie’s Marina in Islamorada, in the Florida Keys, is unchanged for as long as I can remember. It sits on a tiny bit of land right under the overseas highway bridge from the Atlantic and in a cove on the Gulf of Mexico. The feel of Robbie’s is true Keys flavor. There are cute hand-scribed signs everywhere telling you how to live the good life in the Keys. And, as always, you see lots of bight colors. There is nothing, I mean nothing, fancy about Robbie’s. Boats come and go, mostly smaller boats.
You can rent a flat boat, jet ski, kayak, wave runner or charter boat with a captain – but the main draw is the tarpons, large fish that look somewhat prehistoric to me. You pay $3.00 for a bucket of small fish, walk out on the pier and feed the tarpons. And the tarpons are huge, easily 4 feet long or longer. Don’t hang on to the fish though, tarpons are serious eaters. You can also pay $1 to walk on the pier and watch this fun spectacle. I have never been there when someone wasn’t feeding the tarpon.

Coe as part of the Florida East Coast Railway's Key West Extension, also known as the Overseas Railroad.
Florida Keys Overseas Highway is named All-American Road
The Florida Keys Overseas Highway, from just north of Key Largo to Key West, is now an All-American Road.
The designation was announced Friday by Federal transportation officials, during a ceremony in Washington, D.C.
The Keys highway is the only All-American Road in Florida. It's the highest recognition possible under the National Scenic Byways program established by the U.S. Congress in 1991. Only 30 other roadways in the nation have earned the prestigious title.
Originally completed in 1938, the Overseas Highway incorporates 42 bridges over the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Florida Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. They include the Seven Mile Bridge at Marathon, which stretches 6.79 miles across open water and was referred to on its completion as the eighth wonder of the world.
Under the Federal Highway Administrations National Scenic Byways program, roads can be recognized as National Scenic Byways or All-American Roads based on their archeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational and scenic qualities.
To earn All-American Road status, a thoroughfare must possess characteristics of national significance and features that don't exist elsewhere, making it a visitor destination in itself.
The Overseas Highway follows a trail originally blazed in 1912 when Standard Oil millionaire Henry Flagler completed the extension of his Florida East Coast Railroad from Miami to Key West. Construction of the highway began after the railroad ceased following a 1935 hurricane.
In 1982, 37 of the original bridges including the Seven Mile Bridge were replaced with wider spans. Most of the historic bridges still stand alongside the newer ones and now serve as fishing piers for anglers.
Save OTAGO from DEEP SEA OIL DRILLING - ANADARKO OUT! v2.0
In October 2012, the United States based Anadarko Petroleum Corporation in partnership with Australian based Origin Energy intend to start deep-sea oil-drilling in the Canterbury Basin (exploration permit PEP 38262), about 60 km off the coast of Dunedin.
Anadarko had a 25% share in the project that caused the Deepwater Horizon (BP) oil spill, Gulf of Mexico in 2010, spilling over 600,000 tonnes of oil into the sea.
Deep-sea oil-drilling is of major concern in the Otago region (and New Zealand) because of the alarming environmental and economic risks that face our people, land and sea. Global oil giants are not welcome to drill in our coastal waters. There are currently no adequate protection measures in place to protect our environment from a deep sea oil disaster. New Zealand will lose 95% of the profits gained from drilling our seabed, yet we will bear 100% of the cost when something goes wrong. History tells us that it is only a matter of time before we pay the price. Surely it's not worth taking such a risk?
What do we risk by allowing these oil companies to drill thousands of kilometers into our seabed?
1) Our wildlife - The Otago marine environment includes many unique and fragile ecosystems, and is home to many species, including seabirds, shorebirds, whales, dolphins, fur seals and sea lions. A deep sea oil disaster will leave our local marine flora and fauna vulnerable to the toxic effects of oil.
2) Our fishing industry - Commercial seafood exports consistently rank as New Zealand's fourth or fifth largest export earner, while recreational fishing is one New Zealand's most popular activities. A deep sea oil disaster will directly impact our local fisheries resulting in both the loss of valuable fish stocks and the loss of industry jobs.
3) Our tourism industry - The pristine coastlines and unique wildlife of Otago attract tens of thousands of international tourists annually, injecting an economic boost into the region. A deep sea oil disaster will have a pivotal role in tourists' decisions to visit the Otago region.
4) Our recreational water sports - Otago offers unparalleled opportunities for ocean sports such as surfing, kayaking, wind surfing, jet skiing, diving and boating. A deep sea oil disaster will invariably impact many local businesses, organisations, and individuals who enjoy Otago's waters.
5) Our assets - We should be protecting our national assets, not selling them off to be exploited by foreign corporations, or endangering them by oil drilling without adequate safety measures.
6) Our climate - The climate change impacts of fossil fuels are disastrous. New Zealand should be investing in clean energy solutions instead of investing in extracting the last drops of oil from the ends of the earth. We should be climate pioneers not fossil fools.
7) Our coastal way of life - This is a fundamental part of being a kiwi, and we must protect it for ourselves, and for generations to come.

The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) is a collegiate athletic conference in the United States in which its fifteen member universities compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA's) Division I, with its football teams competing in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), the highest levels for athletic competition in US-based collegiate sports. The ACC sponsors competition in twenty-five sports with many of its member institutions' athletic programs held in high regard nationally. ACC teams and athletes have claimed dozens of national championships in multiple sports throughout the conference's history. Generally, the ACC's top athletes and teams in any particular sport in a given year are considered to be among the top collegiate competitors in the nation. The ACC is considered to be one of the six collegiate power conferences, all of which enjoy extensive media coverage and automatic qualifying for their football champion into the Bowl Championship Series (BCS). With the advent of the College Football Playoff in 2014, the ACC will be one of five conferences with a contractual tie-in to an access bowl, the successors to the BCS.
Founded in 1953 in Greensboro, North Carolina, by seven universities located in the South Atlantic States, the conference added additional members in late 1953, 1979, 1991, 2004, and 2013. The 2004 and 2013 additions extended the conference's footprint into the Northeast and Midwest. The most recent expansion in 2013 saw the additions of the University of Notre Dame, the University of Pittsburgh, and Syracuse University. In 2012, the University of Maryland's Board of Regents voted to withdraw from the ACC to join the Big Ten Conference. On November 28, 2012, the ACC's Council of Presidents voted unanimously to invite the University of Louisville as a full member, replacing Maryland.

Walt Disney World - Red Flag Motor Cruiser - Wilderness Lodge to the Magic Kingdom (2019)
Sailing on the Red Flag Motor Cruiser from Wilderness Lodge Resort to the Magic Kingdom.
Sailing on the Blue Flag Motor Launch from Wilderness Lodge to Fort Wilderness and the Contemporary Resort Hotel.
The resort also maintains a fleet of watercraft providing additional access between various Disney resorts and parks. These ferries are also free to ride. While some route duplication does take place (for instance, the Disney Springs water taxis to the Disney Springs Resort Area duplicate buses to these same resorts), the watercraft provide an alternative way to travel from one location to another.
Strollers can be transported aboard all of the boats, and the ferries, motor cruisers, Friendship Boats, and water taxis are ADA-accessible when water conditions are favorable. Motor launches cannot accept motorized wheelchairs or unfolded wheelchairs.
The boats with the highest capacities are the large ferries that traverse the Seven Seas Lagoon between the TTC and the Magic Kingdom. The three ferries are clad in different trim colors and are named for past Disney executives: the General Joe Potter (blue), the Richard F. Irvine (red) and the Admiral Joe Fowler (green).
Motor launches and cruisers link several places in the Seven Seas Lagoon, using colored flags to indicate the route. Launches link the Magic Kingdom to the Grand Floridian and Polynesian Resorts via the Seven Seas Lagoon, using the Gold Route. These launches also connect the Magic Kingdom to Bay Lake via a water bridge to reach Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground, using the Green Route. There is also a Blue Route motor launch between the Wilderness Lodge and the Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground, via the Contemporary Resort. A Red Route motor launch/cruiser travels from Magic Kingdom directly to the Wilderness Lodge.
Water taxis, which also have colored flags as route indicators link Port Orleans – French Quarter/Riverside (blue), Old Key West (green), and Saratoga Springs (yellow) to Disney Springs along the Sassagoula River. A fourth route, the red-flag route, ferries passengers around Disney Springs.
Friendship Boats also connect the International Gateway entrance of Epcot to the BoardWalk Resort; the Yacht and Beach Club Resorts; the Swan and Dolphin Resorts; and Disney's Hollywood Studios. They also connect Epcot's Future World to Morocco in the World Showcase.
The Walt Disney World Resort, also called Walt Disney World and Disney World, is an entertainment complex in Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista, Florida, in the United States, near the cities Orlando and Kissimmee. Opened on October 1, 1971, the resort is owned and operated by Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, a division of The Walt Disney Company. It was first operated by Walt Disney World Company. The property, which covers nearly 25,000 acres (39 sq mi; 101 km2), only half of which has been used, comprises four theme parks (consisting of Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Epcot, and Disney's Hollywood Studios), two water parks, twenty-seven themed resort hotels, nine non-Disney hotels, several golf courses, a camping resort, and other entertainment venues, including the outdoor shopping center Disney Springs.
