Preparing Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles for Ocean Release - Dolphin Quest Oahu
On November 2, 2019, The Kahala Hotel & Resort and Dolphin Quest Oahu held a blessing ceremony to release a pair of five-year-old Hawaiian green sea turtles into the ocean. During a traditional blessing by Kahu Laakea Arista, Kamalani and Kaimana crawled past a crowd as they made their way to their new home. These particular turtles have called Dolphin Quest home since 2016. This is the seventh pair of turtles successfully released by Dolphin Quest Oahu since 1999 as part of the Ocean Ambassador program, an initiative to protect the native turtle species.
The Kahala Hotel & Resort hosts baby Hawaiian green sea turtles on property, where they are cared for by Dolphin Quest and serve as ocean ambassadors to visitors and school children. The Ocean Ambassador program seeks to educate the public about the plight green sea turtles face in the wild and provides a protected environment for the young turtles until they are deemed appropriate for release into the wild. The program also gives visitors the rare opportunity to view this threatened species and learn about conservation efforts.
The growing population of Hawaii Green Sea Turtles remains protected by state and federal law as a threatened species. The Ocean Ambassador partnership between The Kahala Hotel & Resort, Dolphin Quest, Sea Life Park, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) has played an important role in the conservation of these animals in Hawaii.
“Dolphin Quest’s Turtle Ambassador Program at The Kahala Hotel & Resort is helping to raise awareness of the threats green sea turtles face in the wild, inspiring new generations to help protect them, and directly contributing to green sea turtle conservation,” says Michelle Benedict, Aquarist at Dolphin Quest Oahu.
“We were so happy to host Kamalani and Kaimana over the years. As The Kahala celebrates our 55th anniversary, we are thrilled to be a part of their return to the wild,” says Joe Ibarra, General Manager of The Kahala Hotel and Resort.
The public can enjoy a behind-the-scenes look at the care Kamalani and Kaimana received at Dolphin Quest Oahu in the following video:

A Right to Innocence: A legal view of Hawaii's Captive Cetaceans
Published on Jan 10, 2017
Short Documentary: A Right to Innocence - A legal view of animal advocacy
An Interview with Darene Matsuoka
Produced by Nurture Nature Hawaii
Interview by Lorraine Garnier
Camera by Mark Mizusawa
JOUR 270: Intro to Multimedia Storytelling, Fall 2016
Windward Community College
Darene Matsuoka, graduating law student at University of Hawaii, Richardson School of Law takes us through her personal journey of understanding the lack of rights and protections for animals and marine mammals in Hawai'i. Darene initially explores this subject when she came upon a lost dog in her neighborhood. She began exploring animal rights and protections through her work at the Hawaiian Humane Society, volunteering with Hawaiiʻs First Circuit Court, with Hawaiiʻs Prosecuting Attorney’s office of Keith Kaneshiro and her leadership with the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund (SALDF.) As Darene explores this topics further, she comes across the Nonhuman Rights Project, led by Attorney Steven Wise. Wise’s work was able to bring a case recently, against chimpanzee research subjects Hercules and Leo to the United States Supreme Court.
It was at this time she was researching her thesis she came across captive dolphins at the Kahala Hotel and Resort run by Dolphin Quest. By observing the cramped state of surroundings for the current dolphin population there, it was then that Darene decided that she would write her thesis along the similar legal views as Steven Wise.
The Humane Society of the United States - Hawaii Chapter, has placed Darene in a volunteer leader role to monitor legislation and policy efforts relating to animals at the state and federal level.
It has been an immense pleasure to share these important views with the public and we are grateful to Darene Matsuoka in the making of this film.

Big Island Hawaiian Adventures with George and Patty - Dolphin Quest at Waikoloa Village
You get in the water with the only state-sanctioned place on the Big Island to interact with trained Dolphins. The do not want you interacting or feeding wild dolphins, still many go out on the ocean and do it. We highly recommend Dolphin Quest at Waikoloa Village and their fantastic staff for a truly memorable dolphin interaction. Mahalo
Fireworks at Kahala Dolphin Quest, Hawaii
Kahala Dolphin Quest has captive dolphins living in small lagoons on the southeast coast of Oahu, Hawaii. Dolphins are extremely sensitive to sound, like the loud noise and vibrations from these fireworks. In the wild, dolphin and whale reaction is to flee, yet they cannot. The dolphins were acting aggressive and clearly fearful, so we came here to protest this cruel circus that Kahala Dolphin Quest claims to be a conservational and educational show. There is nothing educational about captivity!

Swimming With Wild Dolphins in Oahu Hawaii
It is an experience I will never forget! Our Airbnb host told us to go to this secluded beach on the west side of Oahu early and see if we could swim with dolphins. Makua Beach is known for being able to see dolphins early in the morning. We decided to try and go out and meet them and boy did it not disappoint. We got to actually swim with wild dolphins in the ocean. Swimming with dolphins is extremely humbly and beautiful as you are up close and personal with nature in its natural habitat. If you can head over to Makua Beach early and see if you can go swim with some dolphins yourself! Give us a big like on this video and comment below if you have ever swam with dolphins. Make sure to hit that subscribe button as well!
