Montepulciano Cathedral, Montepulciano, Siena, Tuscany, Italy, Europe
The Cathedral of Montepulciano is the main place of Catholic worship in Montepulciano, in the province of Siena, cathedral of the diocese of Montepulciano-Chiusi-Pienza. The cathedral was built between 1586 and 1680 on a design by the Orvieto Ippolito Scalza; the building was built in place of the ancient parish church of Santa Maria, whose plebeian rights, acquired around the year 1000, derived from an ancient church located outside the castle walls, where the church of San Biagio is today. The church was solemnly consecrated June 19, 1712 by Francesco Maria Arrighi, bishop of Montepulciano. The only surviving structure of the ancient parish is the massive bell tower in ashlars of travertine and bricks, built in the third quarter of the fifteenth century by Iacomo and Checco di Meo da Settignano. The apical part, denoted by the slender bell-shaped mullioned windows, was never completed. The salient façade is also unfinished, while the sides, terminated by brick and travertine ashlars, are enlivened by Tuscan pilasters between which round arches are inserted. Inside, the architectural warp, clearly of Florentine ancestry, is austere and elegant due to the sharpness of the plaster surfaces that alternate with the stone facing walls. The plan is a Latin cross divided into three naves by powerful pillars supporting round arches. In the central nave, in the transepts and in the apsidal scarsella, reported entablatures support a barrel vault; at the intersection of the two orthogonal bodies the angular plumes support the drum (architecture) on which the dome is set. The aisles are covered by cross vaults; on the walls, in correspondence of each bay, there are barrel-vaulted chapels. The pulpit supported by ionic columns is placed against a right-hand pillar.

This is San Biagio church, just below Montepulciano, Italy. The dome and the travertine exterior dramatically rise from the trees and umber soil and looks out to the setting Tuscan sun in the west.

Italy Road Trip: Florence to Bologna (Montepulciano & San Marino)
My Italy Road Trip begins in Florence, Italy where I spend a relaxing day in Firenze before meeting up with friend and fellow travel blogger Clint of TripHackr.com.
We need to be in Venice in four days, so this is part one of the Italian Road Trip adventure to get there!
We rent a car in Florence and drive south to Montepulciano for lunch. Montepulciano is an incredible medieval hilltop town right in the middle of the Tuscany wine region.
Next, we drove back north to the Republic of San Marino for sunset, and onward to Bologna for dinner.
It was a great first day on our Italy Road Trip!

Places to see in ( Montepulciano - Italy ) Tempio di San Biagio
Places to see in ( Montepulciano - Italy ) Tempio di San Biagio
San Biagio is a church outside Montepulciano, Tuscany, central Italy. The church, an example of Renaissance Greek cross central plan, was designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder, who was inspired by the Basilica of Santa Maria delle Carceri in Prato, which had been designed years before by his brother Giuliano da Sangallo. The same plan, taken from Filippo Brunelleschi's works, was used for the original design by Bramante and Michelangelo for St. Peter's Basilica, as well as for the church of Santa Maria della Consolazione in Todi, of uncertain paternity.
The late Renaissance building was constructed on the site of a pre-existing Palaeochristian pieve dedicated to St. Mary and subsequently to St. Blaise. In the early 16th century only remains existed of the pieve, including a wall with a fresco of Madonna with Child and St. Francis, from a 14th-century Sienese painter. The project was supported by Pope Leo X, who had studied under Angelo Poliziano, a native of Montepulciano. The construction lasted until 1580 and, after Sangallo's death, was directed by other superintendents.
The church is a Greek cross plan, with a central dome supported by a drum. The side opposite to the entrance has a semi-circular apse. The main façade, whose scheme is repeated (with some minor changes) on the two side ones, is divided into two sectors by a large entablature featuring a frieze with triglyphs and metopes which runs for the whole perimeter of the edifice. The lower sector houses the portal, on which is the foundation date. Above it is a window, in turn surmounted by a triangular pediment with, in the middle, a circular oculus. All the exterior is formed by travertine slabs.

Endlessly spreading green meadows! It is a picture of Tuscany. The green light of Tuscany attracts tourists. I arrived in Tuscany, Montepulciano. This is a place where I was filming a new vampire romance film. Since the filming, tourists have become an endless destination. Despite the rainy weather, the streets are full of tourists. I shot an important scene of the film 'New Moon' on this square. Bella arrives on that road, jumping as she makes her way between the crowd. And I rush over the fountain in the middle of the square to Edward in the big door. They hug each other and go inside. Many people found to see the traces of the protagonist in the movie. Reminds me of a wonderful character ~ I remember beautiful scenes ~ To memorize movies together! It becomes the protagonist of the scene in the movie. It is said that the number of young tourists who visit Montepulciano has increased a lot since the cinematography has been successful and the film has been well received. I found a store with a movie storyboard. When I saw the storyboard, I was really seeing a movie scene, a scene ... I asked why this is here. Because we used our hostel, we ended up filming and gave the storyboard of the movie as a gift. Did the actors enjoy something? Actors and producers will miss the wine of Montepulciano

Tuscany, Italy: The First Tuscans
More info on travel to Tuscany: Tuscany is named after the Etruscan people who lived here centuries before the region was conquered by ancient Rome. Over 2500 years ago, long before anybody had heard of Julius Caesar, and back when Rome was just a small town, the Etruscan civilization flourished in this part of Italy. What little we know about the Etruscans we've learned mostly from their fresco-covered tombs. MONTEPULCIANO - TOSCANA
MONTEPULCIANO
FILM MUSICALE! Montepulciano hegygerincen fekszik, Firenzétől 125 km-re, délre. A 14 ezer lakosú városka jórészt reneszánsz jellegű. Legtöbb még ma is álló épületét firenzei mesterek építették 1511 után, amikor a város a Firenzei birodalomhoz csatlakozott. Az utcák felfelé kapaszkodnak a város központjában lévő Piazza Grande felé. A tér egyik szépsége a Palazzo Communale, a firenzei Palazzo Vecchio XIV. századi mása, tornyából csodálatos a kilátás, Sienáig is ellátni. A XVII. századi Duomonak nincs homlokzata, mert építésekor a város kifogyott a pénzből, belső tere viszont meglepően elegáns. A városka már régóta fogalom a borszakértők számára, itt termelik Toscana legnemesebb borát, a Vino Nobile-t. Montepulciano környékén még sok-sok csodálatosan szép látnivaló található.

Sweet Little Tuscan Church Boasts Some Big Acoustics
The proud little church of San Biagio, just outside the Tuscan hill town of Montepulciano, is a celebration of the humanism of the Renaissance period 500 years ago. While medieval churches were designed in the shape of a Latin cross (reminding us of Christ’s crucifixion), Renaissance churches were generally done in a Greek cross design (with arms of equal length, like a plus sign). The Greek cross can be contained perfectly in a circle and reminds us of God’s perfection — and how cool it is that we are made in His image. And the acoustics are irresistible.
