CNC-milled house dome inspired by Bucky Fuller's tensegrity
In 1960 American architect/designer/futurist Buckminster Fuller envisioned building a dome over Manhattan to regulate weather and air pollution. A half century later, a Danish construction company built a Bucky Fuller-inspired “geodesic” dome in the center of one of Copenhagen’s largest plazas as an experiment in future living: single family home and mini urban farm included.
“So the thinking of the dome itself and that was also Buckminster Fuller’s idea was: could you live inside a greenhouse,” explains the Dome of Visions founder Martin Manthorpe (of NCC Construction). The Danish dome, designed by architects Kristoffer Tejlgaard and Benny Jepsen, is also meant as a challenge to our conventional ideas on housing: “to explore the idea of the greenhouse as a third space that is both inside and outside at once”.
At a time of increasingly strict regulations for for home energy performance, Manthorpe sees the design as an alternative to ultra-thick walls; instead, the greenhouse serves as the “outside” of the wall and the actual wall of the house is “inside”.
The greenhouse was built with overlapping CNC-cut polycarbonate fish scales. The home inside the greenhouse was designed for a family of 4 and since it’s protected from wind and rain it’s created with a minimum amount of resources and no glue or chemicals.
The geodesic, or “omnitriangulated”, design popularized (and patented) by Fuller is inherently minimalist. It relies on Fuller’s concept of tensegrity, using tensional integrity (compression and tension) to make an extremely efficient structure that is strong while requiring little material. The Dome of Visions was inspired by the C60 molecule, AKA the “Buckminsterfullerene” or “bucky-ball” (a molecule discovered after Fuller’s death).
Manthorpe sees the Dome of Visions as not only a model for future housing for single families, but on a larger scale, perhaps over a multi-family community or a city block. “When you look back in time in Buckminster Fuller’s era, in the sixties, I think that the dome was kind of equal to hippies and I think when that culture or whatever developed I think people forgot the dome and even didn’t think of that as a new way of living. I think it comes up now because we need to think differently when we think about construction and urban and city development.”

AARHUS BESØGER DOME OF VISIONS FEBRUAR 2017
DOME OF VISIONS
The Dome of Visions project is about putting action into words and following through on new ideas in construction and urban thinking and planing. The dome is intended specially to inspire and to challenge regarding the solutions for the climate challenges to come.
This page contains information in compressed form. If you want to know more, go to our international site containing information on the concept and the Dome of Visions communities in both Denmark and Sweden.
MINIMALIST CONSTRUCTION
The Dome of Visions is based on the ideas conceived in the 1940s by the American futurist and architect Buckminster Fuller.
The dome principle builds on studies of, among other things, minimalist structures whose surface tension creates the basis for the supporting framework and facade.
The Dome of Visions was constructed by NCC in close cooperation with architects Kristoffer Tejlgaard and Benny Jepsen. It is 10,5 meters in height and has a diameter of 21 meters. The Dome is aimed at challenging the construction industry and construction material manufacturers. How can we create buildings that are both sustainable in the broadest sense and simultaneously energy-optimized? How can we develop cities if we must balance both daily life and ambitious climate goals?
/ AARHUS 2017
Aarhus and the 18 other municipalities in Central Denmark Region celebrate our year as European Capital of Culture in 2017.
The title European Capital of Culture (ECOC) represents one of the most prestigious and prominent cultural events in Europe.
Every year, two EU countries are appointed as host countries for the European Capital of Culture. In 2017 Pafos in Cyprus has also been nominated as ECOC. Copenhagen was the first Danish city to host the European Capital of Culture in 1996, and it will be many years before a Danish city can boast the title again.
European Capital of Culture Aarhus 2017 is deeply rooted in strong regional cooperation across the entire region.
Frederiksbjerg is a borough in Aarhus, Denmark. It is located just south of the historical city centre, separated from it by a broad railway yard and connected by three bridges. Despite being part of the inner city, Frederiksbjerg has its own charm and character and express some of the first large scale attempts to plan the development of Aarhus as a city. With around 20,000 inhabitants, it is basically a residential area, but with three large shopping streets; Bruunsgade, Jægergårdsgade, and Frederiks Allé.
History
Frederiksbjerg was annexed by Aarhus in 1874, when the city limits was moved south from the railway yard. The city was at bursting point for expansion, due to the accelerating industrialization and population growth, and new building sites were desperately needed. From 1870-75 Frederiksbjergs population rose from just 300 to 2000 citizens and with the building of the new bridge of Bruuns Bro, the admission accelerated further. This development inspired the City Council to adopt a strategy of large scale city planning, something hitherto unheard of in Aarhus and Denmark in general. Several plans was proposed and worked out, but the architect Hack Kampmann and city engineer to Copenhagen Charles Ambt's innovative plan from 1898, ended up as the most influential. Frederiksbjerg was soon fully developed and populated thereafter.
AARHUS BESØGER DOME OF VISIONS JANUAR 2017
/ Dome of Visions
Dome of Visions er handling frem for snak.

Dome of Visions has opened its doors to an updated and redesigned dome after the last visit in Aarhus in 2013. The dome is launched in collaboration between the City of Aarhus, NCC and Dome of Visions-crew and will forward to 2018 could be seen at Aarhus Harbour, Pier 2
CITY SPACE Domen is open to all - an updated community center that provides a concrete idea of how the city's squares and spaces can be supplied with a vibrating life.
Dome of Visions is action rather than talk. The experiment will reap new experience when it comes to alternative designs, materials, urban development and cooperation. Domen must simultaneously pave the way for new visions by providing a framework for conferences and debates on the future of sustainable cities and buildings.
Dome of Visions 3.0 at Aarhus Harbour, Pier 2, designed by architect Kristoffer Tejlgaard (Atelier Kristoffer Tejlgaard) and builds on the experience gained through the work with the first two domes.

Awesome indietronica band from Denmark. Her (Anna's) voice is just wonderful, and I also liked quite a lot the drummer, he did really original drum patterns. Really cool location as well.

AARHUS BESØGER DOME OF VISIONS JANUAR MARTS 2017
Aarhus is notable for its musical history. In the 1950s many jazz clubs sprang up around the city, fuelled by the young population. By the 1960s, the music scene diversified into rock and other genres. In the 1970s and 1980s, Aarhus became the centre for Denmark's rock music fostering many iconic bands such as Arosia, Botha Christensen, Blue Sun, Holger Laumann, Tears, Allan Mortensen, MIchael Learns to Rock, Daisy, Kliche, Kim Kixx, Tina Dickow, Poul Krebs, Bamses Venner, Anne Linnet Jepsen, De Nattergale, Jacob Haugaard, Punkt 22, Per Møller, Uffe Steen, Warm Guns, Birgit Lystager, Henning Stærk, Løse Ris, Booze Brothers, Østjydsk Musikforsyning, The Stuff, Thunderbirds, Aarhus Jazz Orchestra, Birthe Kjær, Shaking Phantoms, Thomas Helmig, Lis Sørensen, Carpark North, Go go Berlin, Lars H.U.G., Velvet Volume, Shit & Chanel, Nephew, Boom, Box 72, Sko og Torp, Rama, Roger&Over, McPsens, Shades of Blue, På Slaget 12, Nice Little Penquins, L.O.C., Medina, Mek Pek, Lars Muhl, TV-2 and Gnags.
