Donaghmore Round Tower
An excellent example of an Irish Round Tower on the outskirts of Navan, Meath. These towers were built in the 9th or 10th centuries to hide from the raiding Vikings.
Also a quick look at the river Boyne by the village of Slane
Donaghmore Round Tower
Driving past Navan, Co.Meath Ireland, I stopped to take a look at this curious tower and old cemetery. The caretaker was there and agreed to let me take a few aerial shots of the ancient ruins and tower up close.
Donaghmore Co Meath, 11th Century Round Tower
We were down at Trim Co Meath for a few days break. Trim is a great base to visit the many ancient ecclesiastical/military/ burial sites/ and passage tombs, dotted round this whole area. On the way home driving north past Navan we spot a round tower in an old cemetery and so we unexpectedly stumble upon Donaghmore Round Tower. ( Apologies for the poor sound. I hadn't realized just how hard the wind was blowing. )
Donaghmore Round Tower
It is believed a monastery was founded here by St Patrick in the 5th century and he then placed it in the care of his disciple St Cassan. The round tower which dates to the 11th century is the oldest of the remaining features at this site. The tower which is built of undressed limestone stands at around 26 metres tall, The tripartite arched doorway has rounded mouldings. It has a head on either side above the jambs. On the keystone of the arch is a crucified Christ. One unusual feature of the tower is that there are no windows in the bell storey, which normally has four windows each facing the four cardinal points. It is assumed that they were omitted during some restoration work by a previous owner in 1841. Also on site are the remains of a 16th century church which has a carved head from an earlier church built in the south wall.
Brilliant. In Ireland both north and south you literally do not know what you are going to find just around the next corner.

I'm from Kells in County Meath. It's a heritage town, and is the home to the Book of Kells, a monastery, high crosses, and lots of GRAVES. Last time we were there to see my family, I made this video! Give the video a thumbs up if you liked it, or a thumbs down if you didn't!
Please leave a comment. If it's good, we'll read it during one of the live streams or videos!

Bective Abbey
Another impressive and well kept abbey ruin, situated by the river Boyne in Meath, Ireland
Foxcab Dublin Feile final 2014 1
Description
----On Location at Bective Abbey, Trim, Ireland 12th Century site!!----
Bective Abbey was a cistercian abbey dating back to 1147AD. The site has since been changed and after the dissolution of the church during Henry the VIII a manor house was built on the site which can be seen on the video. The site is in ruins. You can make out the alterations that were made when the manor house was constructed. It later fell into dissuse and was bought by the office of public works who now maintain the site.
Located in close to Trim Castle. The abbey is closely linked to Mellifont Abbey which we will see soon. Bective at it height include 1530 acres of land.
Mellifont would of been the main abbey connected to the order.
Thank you for watching. Please like, comment and subscribe.
See you all soon...
Cheers
