A Day In Doñana & El Rocío Western Andalusia Road Trip Day 8
Travel Spain - Exploring the Hermitage of El Rocio
Take a tour of Hermitage of El Rocio in El Rocio, Spain -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
In the quiet village of El Rocio in Andalusia Spain is a newly constructed hermitage built on a sacred location.
The area was deemed an official hermitage site around 1270 by King Alfonso the Wise in honor of the Virgin Mary.
The elaborate cross topping this pristine structure comes from the 17th century and previously belonged to the revered Barrio Santacruz.
The gleaming white structure was constructed in the mid 20th century by two Spanish architects over two decades.
Millions of pilgrims flock to the hermitage on the second day of the Pentecost, a seven week celebration after Easter Sunday.
Most people come from far away to celebrate El Rocio and camp among the crowded streets.
When the annual pilgrimage occurs, the city comes to life with magnificent, ethereal decorations, singing, and dancing.

Visiting El Rocio, in Huelva Spain!
A little journey to El Rocio in Spain. It's known for its yearly pilgrimage called Romería de El Rocío. This year 2017 the Romeria del Rocio will happen in June 2017. El Rocio and Huelva are both very well worth visiting. I haven't been to Romeria del Rocio yet, but maybe in 2017 or maybe 2018 I'll finally partake!

▶ Spanish video:
The lynx is not the only hunter at the preserve. The Mongoose wanders through the thicket during the day in search of small mammals, fowl, reptiles and amphibians and even some invertebrates.
It is the only mangoose on the European continent. Its distribution in North Africa and the lack of remains of this species in European quaternary beds have led to the conclusion that it might have been brought to the Iberian Peninsula by the Arabs as a domestic animal.
The extremely well-developed senses of Mongoose make them efficient hunters. Perhaps for this reason, Arabs use them as pets to keep snakes, mice and rates under control.
Two hundred different species of vertebrates inhabit Doñana and the number of individuals is in the millions. Of the fifty-three protected species which reproduce on the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, thirty of them do so in Doñana and five along in the Park and bordering areas. Of the other twenty-three which do not reproduce here, at least ten visit the area regularly.
The high productivity of the bogs and the marshes can be considered one of the highest rates in the world.
Its location between the African and European continents is a decisive influencing factor. When Europe is hit with a cold wave, Doñana receives the fowl which might have been living in intermediate waters. Likewise, when there are extreme draughts in Africa, Doñana is the first point where northward flying birds encounter water.
Between the thicket and the marsh there is a strip known as “the bank”. The large cork trees which mark the boundary are a spectacular congregation point for fowl, which is why these trees have come to be known as the Doñana aviary.
In this noisy birthing colony some 400 spoonbill couples, 100 heron couples, 800 egret couples and more than 2,00 espulgabueyes couples have made their nests.
The nesting species are arranged in hierarchical order. In the highest branches the heron and storks build their nests.
Below them, on the lower branches, the spoonbills make their nests followed by cattle egrets and egrets. Even birds of prey seemed to have called a truce and nest or rest in this disconcerting maternity ward.
For the migratory birds of Europe, Doñana is an indispensable place of rest and sustenance. For scientists and naturalists, a key to European nature. And for the visitor, the placed described by Abel Chapman at the beginning of the century: “The Doñana Preserve has always seemed like a fragment of wild African solitude, uprooted and especially prepared for our personal benefit in this remote corner of Europe... For us, naturalist and lovers of strange savagery, Doñana is nothing short of a paradise on Earth”.

Spain Bird Trip 2019
During my photo trip in Spain last March (from 23 until the 30th), where I saw twenty five different kind of birds and shot over more than 7.000 photos in six days! This photo trip was very special for me due to the made photos of the following raptors: the griffon vulture, black vulture, red and black kite, march harrier, hen harrier and the common buzzard. Next to spectacular photos of the raptors, I also photographed the following bird species: red partridge, raven, stork, Eurasian spoonbill, lesser kestrel, azur-winged magpie, hoopoe, southern grey shrike and little owl.
