Danube Cycle Path - Cycling from Passau to Vienna along the River Danube

Danube Bike Trail Passau - Vienna
Europe's oldest long distance bike trail leads from the lower Bavarian City of Three Rivers, Passau, to the Austrian capital, Vienna, for 350 kilometers along the Danube.
We tested this trail and caught the impressions with our camera. Starting in Passau, we experienced the natural sight, Schlögener Schlinge, where the Danube winds through the hills in two 180 degree sinuosities.
The Upper Austrian capital, Linz -- the European Capital of Culture in 2009 -- with its new spectacular opera house and the museums, Lentos, and ARS Electronica Center is worth seeing.
The mighty baroque abbey of Melk is throning on a hill at the passage to the World Cultural Heritage area of Wachau with its vineyards at the banks of the Danube. We were delighted by the friendly inns with great cuisine and wine selections.
Our family friendly travels ended in the Austrian capital, Vienna, with its historic buildings from the times of the Monarchy, like Schönbrunn castle, the Hofburg or St. Stephan's cathedral, Vienna's landmark in the city center.
We were impressed by the perfect organization of our one week bike holiday through Donau Touristik in Linz, who specializes in bike travels, Prime hotels, baggage transportation, maps and the return transfer from Vienna back to Passau -- we only had to take our bikes (provided by Donau Touristik) and pedal through the beautiful countryside and enjoy the sights. Highly recommended!

May-2014 I began my bicycle tour in Munich and cycled up to here to Passau, Lower Bavaria, then took the Danube river cycling to LInz, Vienna, Bratislava, Budapeste. I then turned back to Prague, Czech Republic, Germany, Holland. Intense river and beautiful bicycle paths.

Cycling from Passau to Vienna | #2
The Austrian Danube is possibly the most famous cycle route in Europe. Most of its travelers cycle downstream, starting in or near Passau and ending their bike tour in Vienna. Some go even further to Bratislava (Slovakia) as it is only 35 miles away down the river. Just to avoid any confusion, Passau is in Germany. From here to a point 17 miles down the river, the Danube represents the natural border between Germany and Austria.
Approximately 38,000 bike the route every year between Passau and Vienna. Assuming that the majority cycles between May and September, that's about 300 people per day. If you cycle the Danube downstream, you will face a fraction of those only. You will be able to relax way more compared with an upstream itinerary.

Per conoscere Passavia è consigliata una passeggiata lungo le rive di Inn (per la Innpromenade proseguendo per il Innkai) fino all'estremo della penisola dove l'Inn confluisce con il Danubio, per poi scendere dall'altra parte lungo la riva del Danubio fino al vecchio municipio. Da lì potete inoltrarvi nel centro storico per esplorare le piazze (soprattutto la Domplatz e la Residenzplatz), i palazzi e la chiese (da non perdere il duomo di Santo Stefano). Un'altro modo interessante e panoramico per conoscere Passavia è offerta dai battelli passeggeri che fanno il giro dei tre fiumi.
Negli ultimi anni sempre più navi da crociera che percorrono il Danubio si fermano a Passavia e il numero di turisti che arrivano in questo modo in città, anche se solo per poche ore, è in continuo aumento.
Sebbene abbia una lunga storia, Passavia è una città molto giovane. Ciò è dovuto all'alto numero di studenti che frequentano la sua università (12.000 studenti su 50.000 abitanti). La città è anche una tappa importante del Donauradweg, una pista ciclabile lungo il Danubio, che va dalle sorgenti del fiume in Germania fino al Mar Nero. La parte più bella e più frequentata di questa pista ciclabile va da Passavia a Vienna e molti ciclisti iniziano questa avventura proprio qui, a Passavia.
To get to know Passau we recommend a walk along the banks of the Inn (for the Innpromenade continuing to the Innkai) to the end of the peninsula where the Inn merges with the Danube, and then descends the other side along the shore of the Danube to the old town hall. From there you can enter the historic center to explore the squares (especially the Domplatz and the Residenzplatz), the palaces and the churches (don't miss St. Stephen's Cathedral). Another interesting and panoramic way to get to know Passau is offered by the passenger boats that go around the three rivers.
In recent years, more and more cruise ships that travel the Danube stop in Passau and the number of tourists arriving in this way in the city, even if only for a few hours, is constantly increasing.
Although it has a long history, Passau is a very young city. This is due to the high number of students attending his university (12,000 students out of 50,000 inhabitants). The city is also an important stop on the Donauradweg, a bike path along the Danube, which runs from the river sources in Germany to the Black Sea. The most beautiful and most visited part of this cycle path runs from Passau to Vienna and many cyclists start this adventure right here in Passau.
