Donegal Town & Donegal Castle, County Donegal in Ulster, Ireland
DONEGAL CASTLE - Milltown, Co. Donegal, Ireland
Red Hugh O’Donnell (Red Hugh I), wealthy chief of the O’Donnell clan, built the castle in 1474. The castle fell in ruin and later rebuilt in the 17th Century. The ruins of Donegal Castle dominate the town of Donegal and as the seat of the power of the O'Donnell Chieftains, it is entwined with the history of the county and the province of Ulster.
Standing on a rocky outcrop in the center of Donegal Town, the 17th Century castle is linked to the powerful dynasties of Ulster and a fine surviving example of a Scots Planter fortified home. Donegal Castle was once the principle residence of the O'Donnells one of the leading Gaelic Clans who trace their ancestry back to Niall of the Nine Hostages of the 5th Century. With this as their center of power the O'Donnells ruled the area of Tir Connell, much of Donegal and were renowned mariners and fishermen. However following their defeat in the Battle of Kinsale by the English in the early 17th Century, the O'Donnells left Ireland along with the O'Neills and other Gaelic chiefs, in what is known as the Flight of the Earls.
Donegal Castle was then granted to an English Captain, Basil Brooke, who rebuilt the previous medieval castle into a more comfortable residence in the 17th Century style with a fortified tower, Jacobean Manor house and curtain wall. However the Brookes weren't to stay for long and after Cromwell's rout of Ireland the castle was left to fall into ruin. The Tower House of the castle has been carefully restored to its former glory.

The best locations around Ireland / Northern Ireland and further afield. A travel blog/vlog of the hidden treasures that are on our doorstep.
Killybegs is a fantastic town in County Donegal in Ireland with a population of around 1,236 as of 2016.
It's the largest fishing port in the country located on the south coast of the county, north of Donegal Bay.
Situated along the coast of the Wild Atlantic Way down Ireland's west coast, it is a popular stop along this stunning route. Famous for its fish, Killybegs is a must see stop along the Wild Atlantic Way for any food lover.
Killybegs is a short drive from the beautiful Fintra beach, a popular family holiday spot and also situated close to Slieve League sea cliffs which are among the largest sea cliffs in Europe with their highest drop of 609m.
Fintra beach is considered one of the safest beaches in Ireland, it is registered blue flag and life guarded throughout the summer season and is popular with day trippers and families.
For any touring family, group or couple travelling the Wild Atlantic Way, Killybegs offers so much things to do and see in terms of spectacular scenery and beautiful food. We highly recommend you stop and breathe the fresh sea air and take in the sights!
The town is situated at the head of a scenic harbour and at the base of a vast mountainous tract. In the summer, there is a street festival celebrating the fish catches and incorporating the traditional Blessing of the Boats which we would really recommend.
When visiting the town, there are lots of great pubs, restaurants and hotels to try. If you fancy some amazing locally caught fish, you need to try the Killybegs Seafood Shack and you won't regret it!

Donegal Town Stopover - Places to Visit in Donegal, Ireland
Donegal Town, Ireland - Through the digging that we have been doing throughout Ireland and Northern Ireland to bring those historical famous places as well as those hidden gems which not all people know about, we have come to Donegal Town in Ireland and the stopover we have made.
Donegal town is a town in county Donegal in Ulster, Ireland, and which is found at the mouth of the River Eske and Donegal Bay and overshadowed by the Blue Stack Mountains. The center of this small town is called the Diamond and it is the place for music, poetic, and cultural gatherings in the area.
This was a quick visit to Donegal town - we didn't get deeper into the place to know what could be visited inside and what are the places one could stay at - but we got the chance to reach the Donegal Friary. The Donegal Friary is located on the outskirts of the town where the River Eske joins the Donegal Bay. This friary which was damaged during the war that took place after was considered one of the most influential Franciscan houses in Ireland but which is now nothing but the fragments of the church and the cloister arcade. Visiting this friary is considered beneficial because it will reveal a lot about the history of the place.
We reached Donegal town, got the chance to get inside the friary, walked through the ruins, and enjoyed the scene that combines the old ruins, the water, as well as the birds in one thing; it was really a different experience and a quick visit to a historical place that dates back to the seventeenth century which those visiting Donegal should do.
The Donegal friary is now considered some ruins and remains scattered around the area and these ruins are actually divided into rooms. There is the nave, the tower, the chancel, the aisle, the transept, the chapel, the cloister Garth, the cloister walk, the sacristy, the east range, the north range, the west range, and the Red Hugh O'Donnell.
In addition to visiting the Donegal friary, there are other things one could do in Donegal Town ( and which are beneficial for those who will be staying there for a couple of days to know more about. Those willing to make a tour in Donegal should visit Donegal Castle - which has been believed that there is a tunnel found linking between it and the friary - which is located in the centre of Donegal town. Walking the Blue Stack Way which is a 47 km long from Donegal town to Ardara. There is also the Donegal Railway Heritage Center which will provide the tourists with information about how it used to be like to travel on the narrow gauge railways of county Donegal.
Never visit a place by just looking on those historical monuments and ruins, you should also give yourself the chance to visit those new places which might be worth it as well as be part of the activities that might be taking place in the town or city you are visiting; these things usually make the trip more unforgettable and filled with more fun.
So in addition to those things we have suggested about visiting Donegal town in Ireland, there are also some things which tourists should never forget about doing, such as getting on the Donegal Bay Waterbus which offers daily 75 to 80 minutes tours of Donegal Bay with its many different islands and wildlife. There is also the walking tour which one could bring a guided tour to walk through the hills and mountains of Donegal or the one hour walking tour that takes place in the historical part of Donegal city.
There are always different things one could do in every single city or town he/she is visiting even if the place is not much historical - which should never be the case because why would you be there in the first place? - all what the person will need to do is search, ask those who might have been in the city or town before, and go exploring themselves to come out with the best outcomes at the end.
There are different things to do and different places to visit in Ireland and that is the main reason behind helping you out with those places which we have been to and enjoyed our times - for the adults as well as the kids.
We have done a quick visit to Donegal and managed to come across the Donegal friary only but we will never deny the excitement we had while visiting a place that dates back to the seventeenth century.
There are different things to see in Ireland, such as the Trinity College Dublin which was found in 1592 ( you could also take a tour around Dublin city by buying a ticket to the hop-on hop-off bus tour ( as well as other places which you might be more creative to find, settle on, and eventually visit :-)
Have you ever been to Donegal town in Ireland? Have you visited any of the historical places found there? If you have already been there then share your experience with us, if not then once you take the decision, tell us more about how it goes eventually.

A Walk Around Donegal Castle and Town on a sunny day in July 2011
This is a video we made walking around Dongal castle and town on a lovely summers day in July of 2011.
Donegal town is situated in the north west of Ireland. The castle is in the center of the town. It was built by the O'Donnell chieftain in the 15th century, beside the River Eske, the Castle has extensive 17th century additions by Sir Basil Brooke. The Castle is furnished throughout and includes Persian rugs and French tapestries. Information panels chronicle the history of the Castle owners from the O'Donnell chieftains to the Brooke family.

Donegal Castle
AKA O'Donnell's Castle
In the centre of Donegal town on a bend of the River Eske is this beautifully restored 15th Century castle. The name Donegal comes from the Irish Dhun na nGall, translated as Fort of the Foreigner, and is believed to have come from a Viking fort at this location. Sadly, no archaeological evidence of the fort remains. The fortified castle keep, built by the wealthy chief of the O'Donnell clan and stronghold for this ruling family, was widely regarded as one of the finest Gaelic castles in Ireland. Before he fled Hugh Roe O'Donnell was forced to set fire to his tower before it fell into English hands

Walking down the mountain towards Lough Eske Castle in Donegal Town, Ireland
So here’s the last video from our time in Donegal Town and Lough Eske Castle. This was taken by Jimmy, and it’s our walk back down the road from the plateau. It’s not the whole walk (he figured that would be too much, so he stopped a little past half way), but it will give you a flavor of what we experienced and saw – and it will be a precursor to a later video about the roads in Ireland. This was very typical of what we drove on between towns throughout the trip: narrow; two-way, but barely one-car wide; with all sorts of stuff along the edges that scraped the car as you went past.
