Donegal Designer Makers

Donegal’s stunning scenery may well only be matched by the county’s amazing artistic talent and some of the very best of that talent is brought together under the brand of Donegal Designer Makers.

Founded in 2009 it has been dedicated to showcasing the work of the current exponents of a long tradition of excellence in craft and design in Donegal.

Jewellery maker Hannah McGuinness is the group’s current chairperson and says that Local Enterprise Office Donegal have been long time supporters of craft industries in the county and hugely important in helping establish the craft collective.

The Donegal network includes the work of acclaimed and established makers alongside the work of new and emerging designer makers and members come from all over the county.

In 2010 they took the step of establishing a pop up shop in Ardara over the Summer months and that has developed with a shop now open full-time selling only goods that have been made in Donegal.

The logistics involved to get to that stage were daunting for the group, but thanks to mentoring and support from Local Enterprise Office Donegal they overcame the hurdles to get their store open for business.

With ongoing support and assistance, Hannah says Donegal’s talented Designer Makers are optimistic that the shop can become a real success and a well-known hub for the craft collective in the county.

Weaving (1940-1949)

Card Loom - women demonstrate simple weaving techniques on a card loom. A comb is used to press the threads into place. The finished sample is shown to the camera. Downings beach is popular for walking, swimming, wind surfing, paddle boarding and kite flying. Tramore Strand is just 2km from the holiday home. This fabulous and totally unspoilt beach runs along the Rosapenna Golf Club. It faces out onto Sheephaven Bay and is an ideal venue for a bracing walk. For those who prefer their beaches a little quieter there are numerous beaches dotted along the length of the renowned Atlantic Drive

The holiday home is an ideal base for the keen golfer. The Rosapenna Golf Resort is 2km from the front door. It features two superb natural links courses -- Sandy Hills and the Old Tom Morris Course. There is also a driving range and pitch and putt course. The top class Portsalon links course is 22km away via the Mulroy Bridge and Dunfanaghy Golf Club is a similar distance to the west.

Ideal Walking and Cycling Terrain

There are plenty of opportunities for ramblers and hill walkers in this beautiful part of Donegal -- coastal walks around the spectacular Rosguill Peninsula, woodland walks in the enchanting Ards Forest Park near Cresslough and hill walking in the North Donegal Highlands. The Harry Blaney Bridge across Mulroy Bay provides easy access to the Fanad Peninsula whose terrain is also ideal for walking and cycling .

The magnificent Glenveagh National Park is just over 25km from the holiday home. This park has over 16,000 hectares (40,000 acres) of mountains, lakes, glens and woods, with a herd of red deer and the recently reintroduced Golden Eagle. A quaint castle is surrounded by one of the best gardens in Ireland, which contrasts sharply with the rugged surroundings.
