Doneraile Court and Estate (PART ONE)
A Norman family who first established connections with the Province of Munster in the mid 16th century, family members holding official positions in Munster from this time. Arthur St. lever of Doneraile was created Viscount Doneraile in 1703 and this title dies out in 1785. This title fell into abeyance in 1956.
Sir William St. Leger purchased much of Doneraile estate from Sylvanus Spencer, son of the poet - Edmund Spencer, in the early 17th century. The Buttevant estate, the other large property held by the family in County Cork, was acquired in the 1820's when Sir John Anderson went bankrupt.
In the 1870's - the County Cork estate amounted to 8,374 acres and the County Waterford Estate to 6,584 acres.
Demesne lands amounting to 360 acres were sold to the Irish Land Commission in 1943 and the Doneraile Court in 1969.

Doneraile Park Heritage Tour 2013
As part of Heritage Week 2013, Michael O'Sullivan conducted free guided heritage tours around Doneraile Park in County Cork, traversing 400 years of Munster's elite gardening history. Michael provides some fascinating insights on the influential Saint Leger family, revealing the latest ongoing research, which indicates that Doneraile shares strong links between Versailles and London's Kew Gardens. Doneraile House was also the site of initiation for the first female Freemason in recorded history.

Doneraille, Donneraille or Doneraile?
AFTER playing detective into the area’s past, Tiniroto schoolchildren believe they can now correct a series of spelling mistakes on road signs. For the past two weeks pupils at Tiniroto School have been researching the history of Doneraille Park after Riley Car Club member Rod Clague noticed different spellings of the name on signposts during a car tour.
School principal Jenny Bennett said Mr Clague phoned the school to tell them about the discrepancies, which fitted perfectly within the school’s term 1 inquiry, entitled “Envision — our Past, Present and Future”. “We went on an Amazing Race around the Tiniroto Area. Children had to solve clues, make puzzles and translate Maori to English to work out where to go next. During the day we had a task card and one of their tasks was for them to find and photograph as many different spellings as they could for Doneraille Park. “The children found at least three different spellings — two on signposts right next to one another. “So far our research has pointed to the name being from Lord Doneraile from Ireland and there is a wildlife park there. We suspect that is the correct spelling.” Miss Bennett said the school’s 14 pupils, aged 5 to 12, were not only interested in the correct spelling but also became interested in who Doneraile was and what his history in the district had been. “The children now want to find out the answers to the above and are doing so during their inquiry times. They would like to see the correct spelling on the signage. “We are continuing our research by asking locals what they think and what they know, and researching using the internet. They are enjoying being detectives in their community and hope to have the correct spelling soon.” Tairawhiti Roads journey manager Helen Harris said the discrepancy between the signposted spellings would be addressed. “It appears the origin of the name was Doneraile but our research has highlighted that the legally gazetted name from 1956 has an extra ‘l’. “While it does appear that the legally-correct name is Doneraille, we’re seeking some further advice before deciding on corrective action.” Until a decision is made, the unique nature of the name, however spelt, is expected to create minimal confusion for visitors in the meantime.
