Czechs Exhibit Donetsk Art: Show charts fate of former cultural center in occupied region
Kicking over a house of cards, depicting the leadership of militant groups in Donetsk, eastern Ukraine. And at the bottom, a face, immediately recognizable – that of President Vladimir Putin as the joker.
It's a symbolic piece of art - showcased at a new avant-garde gallery in the Czech Republic. The show was arranged to document the fate of the Izolyatsia cultural centre from the now occupied Ukrainian city – seized and looted by armed bandits loyal to Russia in June 2014.

Yellow Line: Revitalizing Museum in Ukraine's Donbas
Yellow caution tape is used to draw attention to potential danger. Beyond this fragile boundary one may see a hole in the ground or a crumbling wall mosaic or some other public hazard.
Yellow Line is a series of exhibitions in the Donetsk region aimed at drawing attention to local historical monuments, architecture, and monumental art at risk of being lost. Its organizers include Olha Honchar, director of the Territory of Terror museum in Lviv. She and her team have been traveling to eastern Ukraine since 2015 to help local museums bring their working methods and formats up to date.
Visiting five cities on the Ukrainian side of the contact line in five days, the cultural activists observed how local landmarks are being maintained and asked local residents whether they were ready to preserve these historic monuments. They left five public display boards in each city, reminding residents of their local heritage.
Each city has a unique cultural history, interwoven with both the Soviet and European past. For example, Druzhkivka was once a center for ceramic production. Its porcelain tea sets were common in apartments all over the Soviet Union. Meanwhile, Kostiantynivka is known for its glass industry, established by Belgian entrepreneurs in the 19th century.
In Pokrovsk the museum welcomes young volunteers and is open to experimentation, whereas Sloviansk is inclined toward preservation, especially of its public outdoor mosaics. And the coal-mining town Dobropillia has no local museum. Yet projects like Yellow Line are organized expressly to facilitate the creation and development of local museums.
Hromadske attended the openings of the Yellow Line project’s five exhibitions last winter to see how cultural activists from Ukraine’s west and east are cooperating to highlight local cultural heritage.

SOT, Elena, local resident (in Russian): I’ve lived here in this flat for 42 years and it was never as bad as it is now. Why are they at war with their brothers? I understand, politics is politics but why do you shoot residents and set their houses on fire? They know very well that there are electronics in these houses. Why do you shoot residential areas, kindergartens?

The Coup In Luhansk, Explained
What happens in Luhansk doesn’t stay in Luhansk. And if you happen to be a self-proclaimed leader of the unrecognized Luhansk People’s Republic (LPR) you might find yourself ejected into a different country any day.
That’s what happened to Igor Plotnitsky, the Russia-backed separatist leader in Ukraine’s occupied Luhansk region. On November 21, armed men in unmarked uniforms occupied the Luhansk city center, taking control of government buildings. Two days after the coup began, Plotnitsky fled to Moscow. Then, on November 24, he reportedly resigned.
Hromadske spoke with Luhansk journalist Andriy Dikhtyarenko to get the the inside story about the Luhansk coup, its consequences, and whether Plotnitsky is likely to return to the LPR.
This video was originally published on November 27th, 2017.

Miguel Francis-Santiago. Donetsk - an american glance. Donbass, Ukraine situation first-hand
RTD with Miguel Francis Santiago, the author of “Crimea for Dummies”, go to Donetsk where a bloody conflict is in full swing. With contradictory information coming from the region, witnessing the situation first-hand is the only way to find out what’s really happening there. RTD crew and Miguel Francis Santiago set off to Donetsk, where shots are still being fired and shells exploding, with a camera as their only weapon. So is there a Russian army in the Donbass? Author of the film could not find it. They want to see what the situation there is like with their own eyes. They go to the Donbass Opera House that also serves as a bomb shelter for locals and visit the city’s devastated airport. On their way, they talk to anti-government fighters to learn why they took up arms, as well as common citizens who are trying to go on with their lives and preserve a sense of normality in these dire circumstances.
First OSCE Observer, US Citizen, Was Killed in the Occupied Luhansk.

A Ukrainian Foreign Ministry official confirmed the fatality to RFE/RL and said the person killed in the blast was an American paramedic.
In its statement released late on April 23, the State Department said it was shocked and deeply saddened by the death of the American citizen when his vehicle struck an explosive in separatist-controlled territory.
