於溫王爺神尊前擲茭
必須是擲到聖茭才算數
第一次擲到聖茭時打十下
如果投擲次數太多才擲到聖茭
責打次數會往上攀升

This temple and Donglong Temple in Donggang in Pingtung have joined forces to promote the culture of the gods. Every three years, they hold King Ship Worship and Cut Incense Crermonies, further getting involved with the religious tradition of the coastal Tainan area. The third and fourth floors of Donglong Temple are used as a museum of the gods, a museum of heros in Water Margin, and a museum of objects used in ceremonies so visitors may get a better understanding of the culture.

Donggang, Donglong Temple, and the King Boat Ceremony
Donggang, off the lagoon’s north end, was an important Qing Dynasty port, and today is best-known for two things: as Taiwan’s main center for highly-prized Bluefin tuna (along with mullet), and for the triennial Donggang King Boat Ceremony, staged by its religious heart, Donglong Temple, established in 1706. Climaxing this 8-day, 7-night sacrificial celebration is the burning of a large replica junk, called the King Boat, loaded with sacrificial offerings and effigies of the Plague Gods, important gods in south Taiwan and south coastal China. Traditionally, the boat took plague and disease to sea; today it is burned on land, devotees praying more generally for peace and good fortune.

Burn King Boat - 燒王船出棚
From Taiwan Yearbook 2009: In Taiwan, the name Wang Ye is a generic term denoting some 360 lords of pestilence, whose lives before becoming gods are recounted in hundreds of divergent tales. The lords are generally described as having been people of great merit who, upon dying, were charged by Yu Huang with the task of protecting mankind from evil spirits and epidemics.
Rituals for worship of this celestial legion of protectors differ with locale and time of year. One of the best-known rites for driving away pestilence, usually held in spring and autumn, is called Burning Wang Ye's Boat. As an offering to the lords of pestilence, a life-size wood-and-paper boat is burned along with a sea of spirit money on which it rests and a cargo of more spirit money that it carries.

10 Oct 2015, 5.30am: At long last just before dawn broke, the boat was finally set to burn. The calm that came with the blaze as the sun rose was somewhat humbling, as though a new beginning is in the midst. As you could probably pick up from my voice, I had no energy left to stay longer, but I have been told the boat continued to burn up till midday. Overall it was a truly eye-opening and worthwhile experience.

趕在鬼門開前 東隆宮棒打改運
再過一天就是農曆七月，也就是俗稱的鬼門開的日子，這幾天廟裡的信眾特別多，不少人要搶在鬼門開之前改運，像在屏東的東港東隆宮，就有一套''祭改''的改運儀式，要用棍子打屁股和手心，傳說這樣可以驅邪解厄；另外在台南的一間廟宇也拍到發爐，火焰燃燒時，就像神明伸手比讚的有趣畫面。
