DONKEY SANCTUARY OF CANADA near Guelph, ON - Let's Discover ON
The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada is a refuge for animals that have been abused/neglected. The donkey is considered the 'forgotten equine' because they don't get the same attention as an 'elegant horse' or the 'exotic zebra'. But this place does, and it's open to the public. We learned a lot about donkeys, and had some laughs too.
Please Note: This video was filmed this video 2 years ago and we found out the sanctuary no longer hosts 'Donkey Days', which was a big event and open house. They are however still open to visitors on Sundays in the summer months and select other days. You can always check their FB or website thedonkeysanctuary.ca for the most up to date information. As an attraction, the Sanctuary may have adjusted and changed access and rules while on the farm.

Donkey Sanctuary of Canada
From our 2015 visit to the Donkey Sanctuary of Canada in Guelph.
The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada
Everyone loves donkeys. So it was wonderful to spend the afternoon at the Donkey Sanctuary of Canada in Guelph, Ontario--just an hour's drive from Toronto.
The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada is a wonderful place. These donkeys found a home here when their owners couldn't take care of them or when the donkeys were neglected or abused. They have a happy life and are extremely well cared for. The staff and volunteers at the Donkey Sanctuary of Canada do an amazing job in taking care of these gentle an affectionate animals.
I had thought that I'd have the chance to scratch the ears of a donkey or two over a fence. Instead I found many of the donkeys walking around freely enjoying affectionate greetings from the visitors. I highly recommend a visit to the Donkey Sanctuary of Canada.

Today, Dawn Vincent at The Donkey Sanctuary, had the privilege of meeting and spending time with Kim Hayes, the new Operations Manager from The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada, which is based near Toronto. She's been here in Sidmouth all week on a fact finding trip and told me that she felt the scope of The Donkey Sanctuary is just mind boggling.

the Donkey Sanctuary of Canada, July 11, 2010
Since this video was made in 2010 there has been exciting growth at the DSC. The land on which the Sanctuary stands is now owned, no longer leased, by the DSC! A new donkey barn is under construction providing more room and a drier, well drained ground grade. Improvements in diet has many of the donkeys losing weight. Leaner donkeys mean less chance of metabolism problems. The DSC is run by dedicated amazing people who help animals in need. Please consider donating. Les Sasaki, Aug 2011. thedonkeysanctuary.ca/

The donkeys having brunch at the Donkey Sanctuary of Canada
The food bin is in a little area for donkeys only. This lets donkeys eat in peace, and also protects visitors from getting kicked if they approach a donkey from behind!
