Irish Country Living Editor Mairead Lavery recorded this Cuckcoo in full song in her garden at Ballyanne, in Shanagolden in Limerick, last Sunday (May 19th). According to Birdwatch Ireland, the Cuckoo's song is one of the most recognisable and well-known of all Irish bird species. The male Cuckoo gives a distinctive wuck-oo, while the female makes a pupupupu call. The song period of the bird is from late April to late June.

Focus on Otters
Clew Bay is a unique island archipelago on the west coast of Ireland. The islands once had a thriving island community, now only two islands are lived on all year round. Cattle and sheep are grazed on many of the islands. Seen from the air, potato ridges from past islanders' labours cover most islands. It is a highly scenic area and attractive for sailing, sea angling and tourism.
Clew Bay in County Mayo is a Special Area of Conservation(SAC). SACs are prime wildlife conservation areas for threatened habitats and species. Clew Bay was designated in 2001 as an SAC for its are shallow inlets and bays, coastal lagoons, dunes, mudflats and sand flats, the Vertigo whorled snail, Common seals and Otters. Ireland and its citizens have an obligation to maintain SACs at a favourable conservations status (FCS). FCS is maintained by ensuring that the population and the natural range of the species is not being reduced nor is likely to be reduced for the foreseeable future.
Clew Bays unique island archipelago has over 70 small islands formed by glacial action, called drumlins. Clew Bay has no management plan to minimize the impact of some human activities. The islands seashores are home to several seaweed species which serve as nursery areas for crustaceans (like crab, shrimp and lobster) and over 36 fish species. Coastal otters live from the fish found in the intertidal seaweed habitat among the islands. Industrial seaweed harvesting is set to expand but is currently unregulated and unlicensed by the State. Extensive seaweed harvesting will decrease fish biodiversity and habitat, upon which otters depend on for survival. Prior to licensing, threats to habitats and strictly protected species must be assessed under Article 6(3) of the Habitats Directive.
