Dorchester Square (officially in French: square Dorchester is a large urban square in downtown Montreal. Together with Place du Canada, the area is just over 21,000 m2 (230,000 sq ft) or 2.1 ha of manicured and protected urban parkland bordered by René Lévesque Boulevard to the south, Peel Street to the west, Metcalfe Street to the east and Dorchester Square Street to the north.
This downtown plaza was recently renamed in honor of Lord Dorchester, the governor of British North America in the late 1700s.

At 7h pm last night dozens of protesters gathered at Phillips Square at the corner of Ste-Catherine St and Union Ave in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. They held speeches and brandish flags before taking the street to march for the annual May Day demonstration. Every year at this date protesters and anarchists join their presence to disrupt the peace for various causes. When the group starting marching, police used a PA system mounted on a pickup truck to order the participants not to engage on Ste-Catherine Street. After about half an hour, the group walked north on Peel Street in direction of Ste-Catherine Street where numerous riot officers were seen deploying in the distance. The crowd then made a sharp right turn east on Square Dorchester Street. Police then quickly deployed at the corner of Square Dorchester and Metcalf to prevent the mass of people to make a left turn to eventually reach Ste-Catherine. At this time, all hell broke loose and a chaotic scene of clashes between protesters and riot police officers erupted under the eyes of shocked bystanders. The culprits initially charged in direction of the officers who then replied using an arsenal of tools to push back. Among others, tear gas canisters were launched into the air, producing a cloud of irritating smoke designed to disperse unruly crowds. Police also used batons to strike defiant protesters, pulling and ripping apart their anarchist flags in the process. In a matter of seconds the reminiscent of scared off demonstrators were seen running away in the distance before disappearing behind buildings. Only a few were left on the ground surrounded by SPVM officers who took them in custody. A total of five arrests were reported during the entire day of protest that mobilized member of the GTI as well as the SQ.
À 19h hier soir une cinquantaine de démonstrateurs se sont rejoins au Square Phillips à Montréal pour la manifestation annuelle du May Day. Ils ont tenu des discours avant de prendre d'assault les rues du centre ville. Au départ de la marche annuelle, les policiers du SPVM ont ordonné aux manifestants de ne pas emprunter la rue Ste-Catherine. Après environ 30 minutes de marche, la masse s'est dirrigé sur Peel en direction nord vers Ste Catherine. Au loin, plusieurs agents de police anti-émeute ont été déployé dans l'éventualité ou l'ordre ne serait pas respecté. Le groupe a soudainement effectué un virage à droite sur la rue du Square Dorchester. Des policiers ont rapidement été déployés à l'intersection de Metcalf pour les empêcher de se rendre jusqu'à Ste-Catherine. À ce moment précis les manifestants ont tenté de percer la défence policière et une scène de chaos s'en est suivit. Les policiers anti-émeute ont utilisé plusieurs moyens de dispersion afin de contrer les manifestants. Des bombes de gaz lacrimogène ont été tirées dans les airs, provocant un nuage de gaz irritant et difficile à respirer. Les policiers du GTI ont aussi utilisé des matraques dans le but de disperser les voyous en leur arrachants des drapeaux anarchiques. La troupe de manifestants s'est rapidement dispersée, laissant la fumé des gaz irritants se dissipper et exosant les restes de la scène de bataille. Quelques manifestants sont tombés sout les mains des agents de la paix et ont été arrêtés. En tout, on dénombre environ cinq arrestations dans le cadre de la manifestation qui ont mobilisés les unités du SPVM ainsi que de la SQ.
