Dornoch is a town and seaside resort, and former Royal burgh in the Highlands of Scotland. It lies on the north shore of the Dornoch Firth, near to where it opens into the Moray Firth to the east. The town is within the Highland local government council area, and within the county of Sutherland.
The name 'Dornoch' is derived from the Gaelic for 'pebbly place', suggesting that the area contained pebbles the size of a fist (dorn) which could therefore be used as weapons. Dornoch has the thirteenth-century Dornoch Cathedral, the Old Town Jail, and the previous Bishop's Palace which is now the well-known hotel, Dornoch Castle and a notable golf course, the Royal Dornoch Golf Club, named the 5th best golf course outside the United States in 2005 by Golf Digest magazine.
It is also notable as the last place a witch was burnt in Scotland. Her name was Janet Horne; she was tried and condemned to death in 1727. There is a stone, the Witch's Stone, commemorating her death, inscribed with the year 1722. The golf course designer Donald Ross began his career as a greenkeeper on the Royal Dornoch links. The golf course is next to the award-winning blue flag beach.
Dornoch used to be connected to the main railway network at The Mound via a light railway. The railway was opened on 2 June 1902. Stations on the line were Dornoch, Embo, Skelbo, Cambusavie Halt and The Mound Junction. The stations were shut on 13 June 1960. Dornoch was a parliamentary burgh, combined with Dingwall, Kirkwall, Tain and Wick in the Northern Burghs constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of Great Britain from 1708 to 1801 and of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1801 to 1918. Cromarty was added to the list in 1832.

UNITED KINGDOM: MADONNA WRAP

Madonna and British film director Guy Ritchie arrived on Monday at the romantic Skibo Castle in Dornoch, in the Scottish Highlands, where they are to marry on Friday.
They flew in earlier in the day to Inverness airport en-route to the fairy tale castle.
The couple stepped from a private jet into a Range Rover with blacked windows.
Two other vehicles were on hand to carry luggage and the couple's entourage.
More than 100 journalists, camera crew and photographers, along with a handful of fans had made their way to the airport to greet the famous pair.
As they landed they received a traditional Scottish welcome from a lone bag pipe player, who alternated between Scotland the Brave and Madonna's huge 80's hit, Like a Virgin.
The 19th century castle where they'll marry is also a hotel, where rooms go for about US $1,000 per night.
42-year-old Madonna and 32-year-old Ritchie left their London home on Monday morning to start their trip.
This will be the singer's second marriage.
In 1985, she married Hollywood star Sean Penn, but the relationship failed and the couple divorced four years later.
Madonna and Ritchie met in 1998 at a dinner party hosted by Sting's wife Trudie Styler.
Despite living on different continents, romance blossomed and before long the gossip columns were flooded with news of their flourishing relationship.
Ritchie has enjoyed two incredibly successful years.
In 1998, he took the movie world by storm with his first feature film, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
The gangster flick was a big hit a the box office.
His follow up, Snatch, about a diamond heist also enjoyed phenomenal success.
In August Madonna gave birth to Ritchie's first child, her second.
They named their son Rocco.
He's expected to be christened at the Dornoch Cathedral on the eve of the wedding.
Madonna's daughter, Lourdes, by Carlos Leon, was born in 1996.

Dornoch to Embo
The little village of Embo lies just a few miles north of Dornoch on the road to Loch Fleet. There has been a settlement at this location since at least the Bronze Age - a fine example of a burial cairn can be seen in the centre of the village at the entrance to the caravan park.
Embo was formerly a fishing village, as can be seen from the lanes and rows of little cottages that run in parallel down to the beach. However, nowadays the village is a centre for tourism with families attracted by the long, clean, sandy beaches.
