[TV ZONE] Embracing the Landscape, Byeongsanseowon Confucian Academy
On August 1 2010, Hahoe Village and Byeongsanseowon Confucian Academy of Andong were registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Byeongsanseowon Confucian Academy - where the ancestral tablet of Ryu Seong-ryong, a renowned Confucian scholar of the Joseon dynasty, is enshrined - was the most prestigious private educational institute in Andong. Especially the building construction of the academy is regarded as an architectural gem. The building are surprisingly well configured, and the beautiful surroundings create a picturesque setting. We present the beauty of Byeongsanseowon Confucian Academy adorned with blossoming zinnia flowers.
100 Icons of Korean Culture Ep53C01 Toegye Yi Hwang
Toegye Yi Hwang
Yi Hwang. He was Chosun Dynasty's greatest thinker who aspired to live in accordance with the nature through training his body and mind. And in his last days of life, Plum blossom trees and Dosan Seowon stood by his side. Dosan Seowon's plum blossom trees are in full bloom this spring of 2011, and now it is time to ponder about the significance of Yi Hwang's message to today's modern society.
In 1549, Yi Hwang, who was a famous Chosun scholar, left behind all his glory and returned to his hometown Andong. He aimed to find the way to become a sage through self-discipline and established Dosan Seowon in order to rectify the corrupted educational institutions of that time. And what kept by his side through all his efforts were plum blossom trees. They were white and clean, characters which Yi Hwang aspired to take after to become like the nature. Dosan Seowon is still visited today by those who wish to learn about Sunbi(scholar) mind. Through Yi Hwang's ideals symbolized by plum blossom trees and Dosan Seowon, let's take a look at his philosophy on humankind.

A Santuary of Well-rounded Education
There is probably no other country in human history that has been as deeply influenced by Confucianism than Joseon.
The present economic success enjoyed by Korea has been achieved through a strong emphasis on education and pursuit of knowledge throughout society. This culture began during the Joseon Dynasty.
During the Joseon Era, scholars pursued knowledge as a way to become ethical and act in virtuous ways in contrast to present times in which Koreans seek to acquire professional knowledge and skills to accrue wealth and higher status. Literature, history and philosophy were the main focus among Joseon scholars. This was mainly due to the need to maintain an ethical and stable society in that era.
Seowon (Confucian school) was the place where knowledge was acquired and expanded in the Joseon Era. The effort to expand knowledge among scholars led to closer clanship, more prestige, and political gain.
But there was more to it than this.
- Foundation philosophy of Cheoninhabil (The heavens and humans are one) underlies Confucian perspective of nature.
- Establishment of private institution for a whole-rounded education offered to the ruling class
- Political base camp for local Seowon schools
- Offered services akin to a local cultural center
Thus, the Seowon was a reservoir of diverse cultural content. Due to turbulent times that engulfed the Joseon kingdom at the turn of the 20th century, it was difficult for Seowon schools to maintain their institutional capabilities. Despite this, Seowon schools created intangible and tangible value that humankind should try to share and pursue today.
The history of Seowon schools that began 500 years ago has been reinterpreted in a modern perspective. The value created by Seowon schools are still applicable in present times, and it has been translated for viewers to convey its essence.
