Local KHASI FOOD in Cherrapunjee + Double Decker LIVING ROOT Bridge | Sohra, Meghalaya, India
In March of 2019, I traveled to the Indian states of Assam and Meghalaya to experience the people, culture, history, and food of northeast India. I was blown away by what I found there. This area of the country has a completely different look and feel to other parts of India. The culture is very unique and the food is unlike any I’ve had anywhere else. I’m excited to share my adventures there with you. Come along with me as I explore Assam and Meghalaya!

After making the 2.5 hour drive from Shillong to Cherrapunjee, my friend Paul and I headed to a local market to explore have an incredible Khasi lunch. There were fruits and vegetables as far as the eye could see! There were vendors selling fish, massive bottles of raw honey, and so much more.
I tried some nuts that a local woman gave me. They were really good! Most of the things from the market come from outside the Cherrapunjee, or Sohra, area. There were so many things to see on our way to the meat market, including breads, samosas, and a huge amount of tobacco!
The meat market is a sensory overload. There are so many smells and sounds. It’s a little raw and intense to watch the vendors butcher the pork, but it’s real and is a part of everyday life here. You can get every part of the pig here: the heart, liver, ribs, intestines, pork belly, and much more. The abundance of pork here is part of what makes Meghalaya so different from other Indian states.
Because there aren’t many Hindu locals in this part of India, they also eat beef here. Most of the people are Christians or Catholics. Then we passed through the fish market, where I saw an interesting-looking eel, and the beef and poultry market. Everything was super fresh! Nothing here really frozen.
We saw lots of beef cattle on our way to Cherrapunjee, so the beef in the market is local and is raised in the area. It looked phenomenal! It was starting to rain, so Paul showed me a traditional rain cover as well as some locally-made bamboo mats.
I was starving, so we went to get some food next! It all looked amazing! The open-air restaurant was small and charming and I got several different things.
I started with some dense pork liver with a light sauce on it and followed it with jadoh snam, a rice and pork dish that’s cooked in blood. I couldn’t taste the blood, but it was juicy and fatty and I loved it! The pork fritter was super dense and crispy and tasty. Then I went with the pork fat, which was dense and gelatinous and had a flavorful curry on it. It reminded me of pork belly!
The pork salad was phenomenal, as was the fermented fish chutney. Then I went with the potatoes, green beans, and onions, which was incredible. Then I tried a chili and got some more liver! I capped off the meal with some minty red tea. This was one of my favorite meals of my life! The pork was so fresh and flavorful and blows American pork dishes out of the water. And it only cost 90 rupees/$1.29 U.S.
Back in the market, we saw a stall selling lots of biscuits and other breads. Then we left the market and drove 45 minutes away to see the famous living root bridges of Meghalaya! After you get there, you have to hike another 45 minutes to see them.
We rode down a windy, rocky road through a canyon and finally arrived there. We bought sticks for 20 rupees each to help us down the path. I ran down the path’s stairs to cut down the time.
We crossed a scary suspension bridge and still had so much more to go! We crossed a second bridge and finally reached the living root bridge! It’s made of intertwined tree roots and is gorgeous! We passed through the village and made our way to the double-decker root bridge. It’s made of the roots of a huge banyan tree. It’s unbelievable! You can’t see this anywhere else in the world!
I hope you enjoyed coming along with me for my Khasi lunch and to see the living root bridges! If you did, please give it a thumbs up and leave me a comment. Also please subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss out on any of my upcoming travel/food adventures!

A place of solitude amidst the beauty of nature in abundance...4000 stairs up and 4000 stairs down...Crossing shaky wire bridges twice...with a 1.5 year old baby...So many people tried to stop us from doing this trek but we listened to our heart...It was tough, very tough, with such a small baby...But we told each other that we must give it a try and lets just see how far we can go...And we did it...Winning over the FEAR...

3700 STEPS TO DOUBLE DECKER ROOT BRIDGE IN NONGRIAT | MEGHALAYA EP - 10
After covering a distance of approx 15 kms the first day, Joern and I decided to trek to Nongriat in Sohra. Joern had no clue how adventurous this trip could turn out as he didn't expect I'd be doing most of this trip on foot before signing up for this journey. I had read this trek consists of close to 3500 steep steps while some articles said it had 3000 steps. It appears this trek covers 3700 steps from what one of the locals informed us. We took close to 3 hours to reach Nongriat and we checked in to serene homestay before exploring the double decker root bridge and then one of the many natural swimming pools we found on the way. We couldn't cover the raibbow falls that was another 1 hour of trek away from the root bridge. However, there's no regrets for not covering it as I now have a reason to visit Meghalaya again.

Living Root Bridges and other Structures - Engineering and Design Overview
One of the wonders of North-East India is the technique developed by villagers to construct bridges and other structures out of living aerial roots of rubber (Ficus Elastica) trees. This film contains three parts:
Part 1 - 00:00 Introduction and quick tour.

Video description:
In this video we show you the spectacular waterfalls & living root bridges that Cherrapunji is so famous for. Cherrapunji, located in Meghalaya state, North-East India, is easily a contender for the most inspiring and incredible places we've visited in Asia so far.
Cherrapunji is the second wettest place on Earth. All this rain does have its perks though because without it, you wouldn't see the incredible waterfalls that Cherrapunji is famous for. In this video we show you the waterfalls cascading down from the Eco Tourism Park, the Nohsngithiang Falls (Seven Sisters Falls), Nohkhalikai Falls (340m, tallest plunge waterfall in India) and Rainbow Falls (incredibly beautiful remote jungle waterfall). Many of these waterfalls (except for Rainbow falls) are view-able from viewpoints near the town of Sohra (Cherrapunji town).
Cherrapunji is also known for the unique and fascinating living root bridges. These all natural bridges are hand-made by the tribal Khasi & Jaintia people, from the aerial roots of the rubber fig tree (ficus elastica). The aerial roots are interwoven across rivers to form incredibly strong and durable bridges, allowing the people to traverse the river even during heavy floods.
To see the living root bridges, we trek from the small village of Tyrna to the remote tribal village of Nongriat. In Nongriat you can find a homestay and stay there a few nights to experience the famous double decker living root bridge, which is found in the village itself.
You can also make daily treks into the surrounding wilderness, using Nongriat as a base, to see more amazing living root bridges and the incredibly beautiful rainbow waterfall.

Meghalaya is a state in Northeast India. The name means the abode of clouds in Sanskrit. The population of Meghalaya as of 2016 is estimated to be 3,211,474.
The state is the wettest region of India, recording an average of 12,000 mm (470 in) of rain a year. About 70% of the state is forested. The Meghalaya subtropical forests ecoregion encompasses the state; its mountain forests are distinct from the lowland tropical forests to the north and south. The forests are notable for their biodiversity of mammals, birds, and plants.

Double Decker Living Root Bridge in Cherrapunji | Shillong to Sohra Meghalaya North East India
The legendary double-decker root bridge at Nongriat village near Cherrapunji, in northeast India's Meghalaya state, beckons outdoor enthusiasts with the opportunity to see a 150+ year old man-made natural wonder that's not only unique but astounding. While there are many single root bridges in the area, this is the only one that has two levels. Apparently, local Khasi tribe members grew the second level after an unprecedented wet monsoon season caused water to reach the first level. A third level is planned, but only to capitalize on the bridge's tourism potential.
#doubledeckerlivingroorbridge #livingrootbridge #livingrootbridgemeghalaya
Visiting the double-decker root bridge is not easy. The trek there is long and tiring. It's worth it though, for an out-of-this-world experience that's guaranteed to be a highlight of your travels.
The path to the double-decker root bridge is three kilometers (nearly two miles) long. It has approximately 3,500 stairs and descends 2,400 feet.
The trek to the double-decker root bridge starts at Tyrna village, around 30 minutes past Cherrapunji. It can be comfortably done on a day trip from Shillong, like us. From Shillong, it takes approximately two and a half hours to drive to Tyrna, and costs about 3,000 rupees return. A reliable taxi driver, who's based in Shillong and knows the area, is Mr Kripesh. Phone: 9436533792
Taxi fare (Shillong to Tyrna Village, and return) : Rs. 3000
You can also opt for Night stay as many home stay options are available at on-the-route villages, Rs. 400 per person as home stay owners told us.
