Island Hikers at Double River & Sobo Falls
A nature-lover's paradise nested within the valleys of the Northern Range this is the Village of Brasso Seco a place worth visiting. Located sixteen miles north-east of Arima this pristine landscape walled by towering mountains with streams flowing from some of the highest peaks El Cerro Del Aripo (3085 feet) and Mt Bleu (1779 feet) can boast of having eleven waterfalls. The lush verdant forest is a haven for bird-watchers and is home to a variety of hummingbirds, honey-creepers, tanagers, toucans, bell-birds, trogons and manakins.
The name Brasso Seco is patois for Dry-Branch and just like in the early 1900's the village cultivates cocoa, coffee and cash crops. The population is about three hundred and fifty persons, and there is a RC Church, School, Health Centre, Bar and an information Visitor's Facility. The Estate of Brasso Seco was unknown to most people of Trinidad until the June 3rd 1934 plane crash of sports champion and war hero Marvelous Mikey Cipriani.
The hike starts on the Madamas Road situated two miles east from the Visitor's Centre. The walk to Double River Falls is on a wide open trail that will take forty-five minutes. The terrain is flat with some gentle inclines, decorated by beautiful christophene plantations which grow alongside the trail. At the gateway to the falls, the river joins the Sobo Waterfall tributary complimenting to the name Double River. The Falls is a single drop, approximately 89 feet high and at the base there is a shallow pool.
The warm and friendly villagers encourage visitors to come and experience their adventure land, to enjoy the peaceful ambiance, picturesque waterfalls and beautiful countryside. Open daily is The Visitors Facility where fresh juices, delicious pastels, home-made cakes, sweets and ice-cream can be purchased.

Hollis waterfall
A 3- 5-hour hike through the aripo forest, over ridges and down to the dam where the Hollis waterfall located.few people have visited there this is why it is so exclusive.
ARIPO FOREST TO Hollis Reservoir
In the Northern Range, an eye-opening sight is the Hollis Reservoir. This architectural highlight located in a secluded landscape 5 km north of Valencia between the valleys of Aripo and Cumaca. Hollis Reservoir sits in the dense forest amid tropical vegetation of rare flora and fauna. The Dam water supply originates from the Quare River Watershed and pumps 8.2 million gallons to the people of Arouca, Arima, Cleaver Road D’Abadie and Environments. It is the oldest dam in the country built by Colonial Governor Sir Alfred Claud Hollis between the periods 1934 to 1936.
There is a lot of history about Sir Hollis governance (1930-1936), his achievements on the development of the country. He was a visionary and best remembered for his building of waterworks, electricity, Piarco Airport (1931) and harbor construction. He had a keen interest in the welfare of those he governed and recognised the potential of Dr. Eric Williams. He gave him a two-year grant of 50 pounds to further his studies at the Oxford University. Between 1920 -1930 the decline of cocoa caused a downturn in the economy, yet he noticed a population increase along the Spanish Royal Road (now the Eastern Main Road) and the importance to construct a dam. In 1941 under new Colonial leadership his perception paid off. The Americans established a military base at Cumoto, which provided opportunities for local employment. In 1945 at the end of the World War 11, the population of Arima and its nearby towns increased to over ten thousand. In 1946, the new Governor Sir Bede Clifford tried to construct a similar Dam at Caura forcing the residents to leave however this project failed.
If you have a half a day, consider a side trip to the Dam, however, to visit a permit required from WASA. The rural relaxation and picturesque surrounding make it an ideal spot for a family picnic. The lake enclosed by towering mountains attracts a variety of wildlife and birds. However, not permitted is fishing, hunting, and swimming.
The trek to the Dam starts from Mt. Poui Road in Aripo. The first part of the expedition is a 30-minute climb, to the top of the ridge. Cultivated in the Aripo Valley are cacao trees, christophine vineyards, and watercress beds. In this region, there are many caves due to the porous limestone rocks. The path continues along the ridge in an easterly direction through refreshingly green enchanted woodland and then descends onto the outskirts of the dam

Balandra Basins
Balandra Basins and beach ....... Sunday 21st July'13
One of the finest beaches of the north-eastern coast is Balandra. Situated between the villages of Sylbia and Rampanalgas, it is a sheltered bay and a favorite weekend spot for sea bathers. Balandra is a Spanish word when translated means sloop or yacht, and during Spanish rule the tranquil waters may have been a welcoming location for sail boats. The abundant landscape filled with natural resources and the area capitalises on fishing, agriculture and beach resorts.
A short walk into the forest, to locate the river there are two delightful basins to discover. The shallow waters of the first pool are ideal for non- swimmers while lower downstream the second pool is a deep basin. The rocks along the river bank are a welcoming spot to sit and revel in the beautiful, calm surroundings. The crystal clear waters appear brilliant green in the tree-filtered sunlight, and there is an abundance of cray fish that play hide and seek between the rocks.
The Balandra Forest has a net-work of intricate trails that adventurers will find fascinating and to access the basins there are several routes. There is the option to walk from Rio Seco (3 hrs), Tabateau Trace (1 1/2 hrs) and Alcindor Trace.(1 hr)
The hike begins at Alcindor Trace and will take an hour to reach the destination. The trail can be muddy and consist of a few short inclines. An awakening sound in the forest is the echoing call of the boisterous bell bird. The trip is suitable for children and after the hike there is the option to go to the beach. On D Road to Saut Deau Waterfalls
Exploring the secluded Waterfalls on ut D'eau Beach .
The trek to Saut D'eau or Saint Cion Bay is considered to be one of the most challenging, yet in spite of it's difficulty walking through the chive village of Paramin is pleasurable ,exciting and memorable. Some do this hike to test their fitness while others just do it to enjoy the scenery and high altitude breeze. On the east side magnificent views of Moka Golf Course,North Coast Road,Paragrant and Maraval and on the west the Valleys of Mia, Cameron and Diego Martin.
Paraminians are descendants from French Caribbean Immigrants who came to develop the country following the historic Cedula of Population of 1783. Outsiders will be fascinated to see acres of chive, pimento, thyme ,tomato and cabbage growing abundantly on the steep slopes and may wonder how difficult it must be to cultivate crop on these precipices.Only then there is a genuine appreciation for the planter who never fails in getting his crop to the market.Villagers are friendly and there is always a welcoming smile when they see hikers making The Pilgrimage as they call it to Saint Cion.Just like the old days, everyone greets you with a good morning and this is one of the only places in Trinidad you can still hear patois being spoken.
.Paramin culture remains an enclave of both French and Spanish and is known for it's Parang along with the reputation of producing the best seasoning in the country. The religion is mainly Roman Catholic and a place of interest along the way is Our Lady of Guadalupe Church where their is a patois choir and a special patois mass on Carnival Weekend. It takes about an hour and a half to get to the top of the mountain followed by a further hour to descend to the beach. There is a small waterfall cascading from the hills into the sea and the name Saut D'eau is french for water jump .The prominent statue of Saint Cion can be seen as a guardian overlooking the beach and in the minds of each hiker there is the anticipation of the steep return climb to the top.
Sat 1st December'12......Saut D'eau Beach .
Assembly :6.00am Morne Coco Road Gas Station
Note :Trek starts 6.45am
Rating :6 challenging
Estimate hiking time 2 - 2 1/2 hours one-way
