Doubtful Sound Cruise – New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand

-- About this video --
Today we are going from Te Anau to Lake Manapouri which is the start of our Doubtful Sound Tour! We are going to be cruising on the less popular fiord of the Fiordland National Park. However, it’s 3X larger than Milford Sound meaning that just the Doubtful Sound cruise is 3 hours. On top of that, it’s a whole adventure to get to Doubtful Sound, starting at the shores of Lake Manapouri.
We join the team from Real Journeys for a cruise across Lake Manapouri, a stunning lake and entrance to the Fiordland National Park. The trip is a couple of hours where already we see towering mountains and that famous Fiordland National Park scenery.
Once we are across the waters of Lake Manapouri, we hop onto a bus to take us over Wilmot Pass, New Zealand’s most expensive road to build and the only road completely disconnected by the New Zealand road network. We stop along the way for epic viewpoints of Doubtful Sound and to see some wildlife, the native kea parrot!
We arrive down at Deep Cove where our 3 hour cruise on Doubtful Sound begins. Doubtful Sound makes an awesome alternative to Milford Sound with a lot less boat traffic and chance for the captain to switch the engines off and allow us to hear the wilderness around us. Milford Sound may be called the 8th wonder of the world, but Doubtful Sound has that same impressive mountains carved by glaciers, waterfalls, dark reflective waters, and not to mention the wildlife as we see dolphins, penguins and seals on this trip. If you were only to do one New Zealand cruise, consider this one!
So what do you think of this cruise in Fiordland National Park? Would you add going to Doubtful sound to your New Zealand bucket list? LUK in the comments!

Milford Sound or Doubtful Sound, that is the question... // Trip to Fiordland, New Zealand
Jump to 11:48 to hear my conclusion and tips on both Sounds! Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound in Fiordland National Park are both unbelievably gorgeous but if you only have time/money to visit only one, then there was one clear winner in my mind.
If you want to have the perfect Milford Sound experience, then I recommend cruise with the coach service from Queenstown/Te Anau They have small groups and personal approach! Our coach driver from Fiordland Tours was just the best :)
Our Doubtful Sound tour provider was Real Journeys Adventures ( they were good, too. They are the cheapest but be warned - the buses, boats and groups are big so it can feel quite crowded.
WHY IS IT CALLED SOUND?
Both Doubtful and Milford Sound are actually a fjords and it's wrongly named because the first Europeans discovering New Zealand who named them didn't know really the difference between a sound and a fjord (well, neither did I...). A sound is a result of the sea’s invasion on a river valley to form an extended inlet characterized by sloping valley hillsides which sink to current sea level and deeper under water. A fjord is a narrow steep-sided valley filled with seawater. It is formed by a glacier which washes away the bedrock of an area as it tumbles down. Smarter every day, eh! ????

Doubtful Sound Wilderness Cruises - Real Journeys, New Zealand
Doubtful Sound in the south island of New Zealand, is an unspoilt and remote wilderness of many moods. One minute clear, blue and sun-drenched, the next mysterious and mist shrouded.
Cruise across beautiful Lake Manapouri and coach over Wilmot Pass to Deep Cove where you will board our catamaran for a three hour cruise taking in the dramatic scenery of Doubtful Sound.
Our nature guides are always on hand to point out the highlights and wildlife sightings are common (dolphins, seals, penguins).
Coach connections from Te Anau and Queenstown available.
Te Anau and Milford Sound | Day Trip | New Zealand (HD)
Te Anau is a town on the South Island of New Zealand (172 KM from Queenstown). It’s known as a gateway to Fiordland National Park and Milford Sound. Te Anau Caves feature a limestone grotto of Glowworms and an underground waterfall (Real Journeys run 1 hour tour to Glow-warm cave).
Milford Sound is an inlet (sound) in the southwest of New Zealand’s South Island (285 KM from Queenstown and 118 KM from Te Anau). The drive from Te Anau to Milford Sound is very beautiful. Eglington Valley, Mirror Lake, The Divide, Monkey Creek, Homer Tunnel are few of the attractions on the way to Milford Sound. Beautiful mountain ranges with glacier at the peak are both side of the road.
The beauty of Milford Sound doesn’t have any word. This is my little afford to showcase the trip from Queenstown to Milford Sound via Te Anau.

I went on a family holiday last year with my parents from Perth & my sister from Adelaide (me from Brisbane) and we met in New Zealand. The photos are from an overnight boat trip on Doubtful Sound on the South Island. Most of the video footage is from a promotional DVD of the area called 'Ata Whenua' or 'Shadowland' . Road Tripping New Zealand, Episode 3: Te Anau, Doubtful Sound, & Mt. Cook
The final episode in the 3-part series takes us to beautiful Te Anau for a cruise on Doubtful Sound, a less-crowded and more remote version of Milford Sound, as well us up towards Milford Sound to see the Mirror Lakes. We then head to Twizel to go hike the Hooker Valley Track at the base of Mt. Cook. On the way back to Christchurch we pass the beautiful Rakaia Gorge, and then sadly have to fly home! Enjoy the 80s music on this one :-).

-- About this video --
Today we are finally leaving Te Anau and taking the Milford Sound road to Milford Sound. We’re taking a whole day to do this because there are so many awesome things to do on the Milford Road along the way!
We hit State Highway 94, the Milford Road between Te Anau and Milford Sound. First stop for us is the Eglinton Valley – a 2km wide valley with unreal scenery. There’s plenty of space to park up safely and embrace! Next, we stop at the Mirror Lakes, a short walk to a super reflective lake.
There are many safe viewing areas and lookouts to pull up to along the Milford Sound Road to see the Hollyford Valley and array of waterfalls on a rainy day like today.
Next we stop at the famous Homer Tunnel carved right through the granite of the Darren Mountains. It took around 20 years to build and is the start of our descent into Milford Sound. We arrive in an amazing valley of glacier-carved mountains and Fiordland National Park forest. This has to be one of the best roads in New Zealand.
Tonight we are staying in one of the only accommodation in Milford Sound, The Milford Sound Loge.
So what do you think of the Road to Milford Sound? Do you think it’s worth taking your time on? LUK in the comments!

MILFORD SOUND, NEW ZEALAND: WHAT TO SEE ON THE WAY TO FIORDLAND (2018) /// THESTYLEJUNGLE VLOG #10
Milford Sound is the most visited and the most stunning tourist attraction in New Zealand. It is located on the NZ South Island within Fiordland National Park. When going to Milford Sound, most tourists drive from Queenstown via Te Anau which is probably the most picturesque road in New Zealand or even in the world. Although Milford Sound itself is absolutely stunning, there are a lot more amazing spots on the way to Fiordland National Park. You can see the Mirror Lakes, the Eglinton Valley, The Homer Tunnel and much more! Check out our guide to Milford Sound, New Zealand and what to see on the way to Fiordland National Park to plan stops on your way from Queenstown via Te Anau.
