Douglas (Manx: Doolish) is the capital and largest town of the Isle of Man, with a population of 27,938 (2011). It is located at the mouth of the River Douglas, and on a sweeping bay of two miles. The River Douglas forms part of the town's harbour and main commercial port.
Douglas was a small settlement until it grew rapidly as a result of links with the English port of Liverpool in the 18th century. Further population growth came in the following century, resulting during the 1860s in a staged transfer of the High Courts, the Lieutenant Governor's residence, and finally the seat of the legislature, Tynwald, to Douglas from the ancient capital, Castletown.
The town is the Island's main hub for business, finance, legal services, shipping, transport, shopping, and entertainment. The annual Isle of Man TT motorcycle races start and finish in Douglas.
The Isle of Man is located in the middle of the northern Irish Sea, almost equidistant from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland (closest), and Wales (farthest). It is 52 kilometres (32 mi) long and, at its widest point, 22 kilometres (14 mi) wide. It has an area of around 572 square kilometres (221 sq mi). Besides the island of Mann itself, the political unit of the Isle of Man includes some nearby small islands: the seasonally inhabited Calf of Man, Chicken Rock on which stands an unmanned lighthouse, St Patrick's Isle and St Michael's Isle. The last two of these are connected to the main island by permanent roads/causeways.
Ranges of hills in the north and south are separated by a central valley. The northern plain, by contrast, is relatively flat, consisting mainly of deposits from glacial advances from western Scotland during colder times. There are more recently deposited shingle beaches at the northernmost point, the Point of Ayre. The island has one mountain higher than 600 metres (2,000 ft), Snaefell, with a height of 620 metres (2,034 ft). According to an old saying, from the summit one can see six kingdoms: those of Mann, Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales, and Heaven. Some versions add a seventh kingdom, that of the sea, or Neptune

Douglas is the capital and largest town of the Isle of Man . Douglas is located at the mouth of the River Douglas, and on a sweeping bay of two miles. The River Douglas forms part of the town's harbour and main commercial port. The town is the Island's main hub for business, finance, legal services, shipping, transport, shopping, and entertainment. Further population growth came in the following century, resulting during the 1860s in a staged transfer of the High Courts, the Lieutenant Governor's residence, and finally the seat of the legislature, Tynwald, to Douglas from the ancient capital, Castletown.
Douglas is on the east of the island near the confluence of the two rivers Dhoo and Glass forming the Douglas. At Douglas, the river flows through the quay and into Douglas Bay. A gently sloping valley runs inland. Hills lie to the north-west and south-east. The town is surrounded by several other smaller towns and villages, most notably Onchan to the north (which forms a conurbation with Douglas) and Union Mills to the west.
Douglas is the hub of the island's bus network, with regular services to Port Erin, Peel and Ramsey, as well as various local bus services. The town also has the termini of the two main railway lines on the island: the steam railway to Port Erin and the electric tramway to Ramsey. It is also the home of the ferry terminal, from where the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company operate regular services to Heysham, Dublin, Belfast and Liverpool.
Douglas has a number of attractions and items of interest:
The Tower of Refuge is a small castle-like shelter built upon Conister Rock in Douglas Bay as a sanctuary for shipwrecked sailors. Construction was instigated by Sir William Hillary, founder of the RNLI.
Douglas Head is home to the Grand Union Camera Obscura which has recently undergone restoration and is open to the public during the summer months. Other artefacts and remnants of Victorian Tourism can still be found on walks around the area.
The horse-drawn trams that run along the promenade from the Sea Terminal to the Manx Electric Railway station from spring to early autumn.
Steam trains run 15 miles from Douglas railway station to Port Erin in the south of the Island.
The Grandstand on Glencrutchery Road marks the start and finish of the annual TT Races and various other motorsports.
The Gaiety Theatre and the Villa Marina are popular venues for all manner of stage acts: from rock music to comedy to drama to ballet. The Gaiety Theatre is one of the best surviving examples of the work of Frank Matcham and dates from 1900. Both venues have recently undergone extensive renovations.
The award-winning Manx Museum in Kingswood Grove contains many of the most important cultural artefacts relating to the Manx nation. Highlights include the Calf of Man Crucifixion Stone, the Pagan Lady's necklace from the Viking excavations at Peel Castle, and the largest collection of Archibald Knox materials. It also houses the National Art Collection, and the National Archives.
The Jubilee clock is a street clock built in 1887 to mark the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria's reign. It is located at the foot of Victoria Street and Loch Promenade. The location also marked the lower terminus of the Upper Douglas Cable Tramway
Other buildings of interest include Isola restaurant, in John Street, and the Douglas Hotel, on the North Quay, both merchants' houses from the mid-18th century; the Castle Mona (formerly the Quality Hotel), a seaside mansion built by John Murray, 4th Duke of Atholl in 1804, currently awaiting refurbishment; and the Loch Promenade, a curving terrace of former boarding houses dating from the 1870s.

ISLE OF MAN TT 2016, RED ARROWS, 360° View LOCH PROMENADE DOUGLAS
ISLE OF MAN TT 2016, RED ARROWS, LOCH PROMENADE DOUGLAS 360° View
The Isle of Man TT for many years was the most prestigious motor-cycle race in the world and also seen as the ultimate test for competitors and machines alike.
Thousands of Bikers and Spectators from around the world are gathered to watch the Red Arrow Show by the Prom. While waiting, I took a 360° view of the Douglas Promenade viewing the rides stationed along quay, the motor racing happening on the other end of the beach, the boats on the sea, Ferry docked by the Sea Terminal etc. Would have been good if the weather was better but it turned out to be a little bit hazy. I apologize in advance that the video is a little bit shaky as I was feeling cold, trying to steady my camera is difficult.
PAUL KIRNER at the VILLA MARINA, DOUGLAS, Isle of Man - QUICKSTEP Medley HAMMOND C3 - Summer 1974
More Seaside Memories - PAUL KIRNER playing a Quickstep Medley
in the ROYAL HALL at the VILLA MARINA, DOUGLAS, ISLE OF MAN
on his HAMMOND C3 with two PR40's and two LESLIE 122 cabinets.
The first two weeks of the season were spent at the PORT SODERICK HOTEL
presenting a cabaret style show with HAZEL ADAMS and magician UNCLE MAC,
while new seating was fitted at the Villa Marina.
My full season lasted nearly four months, early June to late September 1974,
and for the main summer months I was joined by The PAUL GOLD SET
who played both the Bandstand in the afternoons and Royal Hall for evening shows and dancing.
We had an interesting outing to the PALACE BALLROOM, just down the promenade,
for the annual international OLD TIME DANCE FESTIVAL for two weeks!
Never a dull moment! PAUL KIRNER is available for Concert Dates anywhere in the UK.
HAZEL had many and various supporting spots in the Variety Shows at the Villa
with acts KEN DODD, HYLDA BAKER, RONNIE COLLIS and many others.
Enjoyed many a cup of coffee and a chat with TV wrestling star GIANT HAYSTACKS,
a true Gentle Giant and a real gentleman.
My main work consisted of playing my Hammond C3 in the mornings
on the Bandstand, and evenings playing the band breaks in the Royal Hall,
and solo organ for dancing in the then new Garden Room.
Organists in earlier years included Southend's BILLY DUNCAN and KEITH HURFORD.
Interestingly, the Villa had provision for a Wurlitzer Pipe Organ installation
which never happened. An ideal hall for a Wurlitzer Theatre Organ!
Available to entertain the holiday makers daily!
Chambers were provided to the left of the stage
and a pit for the console lift in the centre of the stage as at Blackpool Tower!
But the Hammond came along and was the New Kid on the Block!
The Quickstep Titles are:-

CLAP HANDS! HERE COMES CHARLEY

The amazing town of Douglas on the Isle of Man
Let's explore the world through Google Street View.
Today we are visiting Douglas in the Isle of Man. What an amazing old city! I was so impressed by the architecture all around the city. It's a small city but it has a lot going for it. Cute shops and restaurants, a great seafront with historic hotels, an electric train, and so much more. I would looove to visit here some day.
Here you can check out where we have been on Google Maps.
Thanks to Google for Street View.
