LEAD IN:
China is developing yet another industry that promises to supply markets around the world in the coming years - flowers.
In the poorer south-west province of Yunnan, the area of land being cultivated for blooms has increased a thousand fold since the 1990's - and much of the produce is headed overseas for export.
STORYLINE:
Yin Shucang is a flower grower in Yunnan Province, tending his blooms to supply a new demand for cut flowers.
For 30 years, Communist China considered flowers an extravagance - fit only for those once dubbed class enemies.
Farmers grew rice and vegetables, everyday staples, luxury items likes flowers were frowned upon.
But in 1988, after a few locals from Yunnan Province witnessed what city folk near the wealthier coastal cities would pay for flowers, they decided to turn their fields over and establish a new industry in South West China.
It's been a steep learning curve for the flower growers and their staff in what is still one of China's poorest regions: how to treat the soil, sow the seeds, know what to cut and what to save.
Yin gave up growing food on his family's 500 square metre plot a decade ago - and joined the growing band of farmers in rural Dounan that switched to cultivating flowers.
Much of the business is conducted at Dounan's noisy, bustling market where 10,000 growers and wholesalers from throughout Yunnan Province gather daily.

Kenya exploits flower market in China
Kenya flower producers are optimistic about the export of flowers to China. Significantly, the huge population in China is expected to grow the export of flowers with their growing demand. Jane Ngige, The CEO of Kenya Flower Council (KFL) told CNC that there has been significant growth of flower exports to the Asia economic giant in the last 2 to 3 years.
Although currently reports show that over 70% of Kenya's cut flowers are exported to Europe. However Jane says this is likely to change in the near future, as demands rises in the East.
