AmaWaterways Excursion to Lisbon, Portugal During River Cruise in Douro Valley, Portugal & Spain
AmaWaterways Excursion to Lisbon, Portugal during a European River Cruise vacation that includes cruising through the beautiful Douro Valley on-board the just launched luxury ship AmaVida and seeing many other parts of Portugal by bus as documented by travel filmmaker Clint Denn. Lisbon is recognised as a global city because of its importance in finance, commerce, media, entertainment, arts, international trade, education, and tourism. It is one of the major economic centres on the continent, with a growing financial sector and the largest/second largest container port on Europe's Atlantic coast. Lisbon Portela Airport serves over 15.3 million passengers annually (2012); the motorway network and the high-speed rail system of (Alfa Pendular) link the main cities of Portugal. It is the tenth richest metropolitan area by GDP on the continent amounting to 110 billion euros and thus €39,375 per capita, 40% higher than the average European Union's GDP per capita. The city occupies 32nd place of highest gross earnings in the world. Most of the headquarters of multinationals in the country are located in the Lisbon area and it is the ninth city in the world in terms of quantity of international conferences. It is also the political centre of the country, as seat of Government and residence of the Head of State
Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world, and the oldest city in Western Europe, predating other modern European capitals such as London, Paris and Rome by hundreds of years. Julius Caesar made it a municipium called Felicitas Julia, adding to the name Olissipo. Ruled by a series of Germanic tribes from the fifth century, it was captured by the Moors in the eighth century. In 1147, the Crusaders under Afonso Henriques reconquered the city and since then it has been a major political, economic, and cultural centre of Portugal. Unlike most capital cities, Lisbon's status as the capital of Portugal has never been granted or confirmed officially -- by statute or in written form. Its position as the capital has formed through constitutional convention, making its position as de facto capital a part of the Constitution of Portugal.

Lisbon (/ˈlɪzbən/; Portuguese: Lisboa, IPA: [liʒˈboɐ]) is the capital and the largest city of Portugal, with a population of 552,700 within its administrative limits in an area of 100.05 km².Its urban area extends beyond the city's administrative limits with a population of around 2.7 million people, being the 11th-most populous urban area in the European Union. About 2.8 million people live in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (which represents approximately 27% of the country's population). It is continental Europe's westernmost capital city and the only one along the Atlantic coast. Lisbon lies in the western Iberian Peninsula on the Atlantic Ocean and the River Tagus. The westernmost areas of its metro area is the westernmost point of Continental Europe.
Lisbon is recognised as a global city because of its importance in finance, commerce, media, entertainment, arts, international trade, education and tourism. It is one of the major economic centres on the continent, with a growing financial sector and one of the largest container ports on Europe's Atlantic coast. Lisbon Portela Airport serves over 20 million passengers annually, as of 2015, and the motorway network and the high-speed rail system of Alfa Pendular link the main cities of Portugal. The city is the 7th-most-visited city in Southern Europe, after Istanbul, Rome, Barcelona, Madrid, Athens and Milan, with 1,740,000 tourists in 2009. The Lisbon region contributes with a higher GDP PPP per capita than any other region in Portugal. It also ranks as the 10th highest GDP of metropolitan areas in the EU amounting to 110 billion euros and thus €39,375 per capita, 40% higher than the average European Union's GDP per capita. The city occupies 32nd place of highest gross earnings in the world. Most of the headquarters of multinationals in the country are located in the Lisbon area. It is also the political centre of the country, as its seat of Government and residence of the Head of State.
Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world, and the oldest in Western Europe, predating other modern European capitals such as London, Paris and Rome by centuries. Julius Caesar made it a municipium called Felicitas Julia, adding to the name Olissipo. Ruled by a series of Germanic tribes from the 5th century, it was captured by the Moors in the 8th century. In 1147, the Crusaders under Afonso Henriques reconquered the city and since then it has been a major political, economic and cultural centre of Portugal. Unlike most capital cities, Lisbon's status as the capital of Portugal has never been granted or confirmed officially – by statute or in written form. Its position as the capital has formed through constitutional convention, making its position as de facto capital a part of the Constitution of Portugal.
Lisbon enjoys a Mediterranean climate. It has the warmest winters of any metropolis in Europe, with average temperatures 15 °C (59 °F) during the day and 8 °C (46 °F) at night from December to February. The typical summer season lasts about six months, from May to October, although also in April temperatures sometimes reach around 25 °C (77.0 °F).
Amazing Sites In Portugal
In this video we show you some of the most amazing sites in Portugal.
Portugal is a republic on the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe. Portugal borders Spain in the north and east and has coast to the Atlantic in the west and south. Also included is the Azores archipelago located in the Atlantic west of mainland Portugal and the island of Madeira which is also in the Atlantic, but southwest of Portugal.
Portugal's capital is Lisbon.
During the 1400s and 1500s, Portugal was one of the world's economic, political and cultural centers, with colonies in South America, Africa and Asia and with several famous explorers such as Bartolomeu Dias, Vasco da Gama, Pedro Álvares Cabral and Magellan. As a result of war with Spain in the 17th century and with both Spain and France in the 19th century, Portugal gradually lost its colonies and influence. After domestic political conflicts and colonial wars in the 1900s, the last colonies gained autonomy in the 1970s, with the exception of Macau who was returned to China in 1999. As a result of Portugal's previously extensive colonies, Portuguese is the sixth largest language in the world. Only a minority of Portuguese speakers live in Portugal.
Portugal's current borders have been largely stable since the middle of the 13th century, but since then they have been in union with Spain (1580-1640) and were also invaded by Napoleon Bonaparte's troops in the early 1800s, which led to the capital of the Portuguese Empire had to be moved to Brazil in 1808-1821. Portugal participated in the First World War on the Allies' side [3], but remained neutral during the Second World War. After a military coup in 1926, the country became an authoritarian military dictatorship until 1974, when a bloody revolution led to the current democratic form of government.
Portugal has been a member of the European Union since 1986 and is one of the nations that founded the military alliance NATO in 1949.
Portugal is one of Europe's hottest countries. In continental Portugal, the annual average temperature is about 15 degrees Celsius in the north and 18 in the south. In spring and summer it is often sunny and temperatures in July and August are between 35 and 40 degrees inland and 30-35 in the north. The temperature can also reach 45 degrees in the southern part of the country.
Autumn and winter are usually rainy and windy, although sunny days also occur. The temperature does not often fall below 5 degrees. The average is 10 degrees, but further inland the temperature can be below zero degrees.
Snow is common in mountainous areas in the north, especially in Serra da Estrela.
Portugal has a Mediterranean climate, especially in the Algarve and Alentejo, although the coast is technically Atlantic.
Portugal is trying to develop a cultural and more multifaceted tourism than the sun and bathing tourism it currently has mainly. The reason is that the more affluent tourists are usually more interested in getting to know the real Portugal. The country's interior has a declining population, but has very good opportunities for greater tourism. The beaches of the Algarve region have been a major attraction for decades, but the area has suffered from mass tourism and the state is trying to return to the 1960s Algarve, by recreating coastal areas and demolishing illegally built residential areas.
Mass tourism has also caused ecological damage in the Algarve, including water shortages. The Lisbon area has in recent years also become a popular tourist destination, thanks in large part to the city's attractions but also thanks to the palaces and castles in the area. There are also hopes for more tourism to Madeira and the Azores.
