Dover is a coastal town in England’s southeastern county of Kent. It’s a major port for ferries to Calais, in France. Built to repel invasions from across the English Channel, medieval Dover Castle overlooks the town and houses the extensive Secret Wartime Tunnels. The iconic White Cliffs of Dover are symbolic safeguards at Britain’s closest point to continental Europe.
Dover is a town and major ferry port in the home county of Kent, in South East England. It faces France across the strait of Dover, the narrowest part of the English Channel, and lies south-east of Canterbury; east of Kent's county town Maidstone; and north-east along the coastline from Dungeness and Hastings. The town is the administrative centre of the Dover District and home of the Dover Calais ferry through the Port of Dover. The surrounding chalk cliffs are known as the White Cliffs of Dover.
Dover strategic position has been evident throughout its history: archaeological finds have revealed that the area has always been a focus for peoples entering and leaving Britain. The name of the town derives from the name of the river that flows through it, the River Dour. The town has been inhabited since the Stone Age according to archaeological finds, and Dover is one of only a few places in Britain – London, Edinburgh, and Cornwall being other examples – to have a corresponding name in the French language, Douvres.
There was a military barracks in Dover, which was closed in 2007. Although many of the former ferry services have declined, services related to the Port of Dover provide a great deal of the town’s employment, as does tourism. The prospect of privatising the sale of the Port of Dover to create increased cash flow for the government was given a recent ironic twist due to the rejection of a possible bid from the town of Calais in France after opposition in Dover against any sale forced the government to withdraw the Port from the market. Local residents had clubbed together to propose buying it for the community, more than 12,000 people have bought a £10 share in the People's Port Trust.
Dover is near the extreme south-east corner of Britain between Deal and Folkestone. At South Foreland, the nearest point to the continent, Cap Gris Nez near Calais is 34 kilometres (21 mi) away, across the Strait of Dover - because of this, the town is strongly associated with France
Dover’s main communications artery, the A2 road replicates two former routes, connecting the town with Canterbury. The railway reached Dover from two directions: the South Eastern Railway's main line connected with Folkestone in 1844, and the London, Chatham and Dover Railway opened its line from Canterbury in 1861. Trains run from Dover Priory to London Charing Cross, London Victoria or London St Pancras International stations in London, and Ramsgate or Sandwich in Kent. Trains from Dover Priory are run by Southeastern (train operating company). Dover has two long distance footpaths: the Saxon Shore Way and the North Downs Way. Two National Cycle Network routes begin their journey at the town. The Port of Dover is a 20 minute walk from Dover Priory railway station.

Dover Castle is a medieval castle in Dover, Kent. It was founded in the 11th century and has been described as the Key to England due to its defensive significance throughout history. Dover Castle is the largest castle in England.
Massive rebuilding took place at the end of the 18th century during the Napoleonic Wars. William Twiss, the Commanding Engineer of the Southern District, as part of his brief to improve the town's defences, completed the remodelling of the outer defences of Dover Castle adding the huge Horseshoe, Hudson's, East Arrow and East Demi-Bastions to provide extra gun positions on the eastern side, and constructing the Constable's Bastion for additional protection on the west.
Dover Castle is a Scheduled Monument, which means it is a nationally important historic building and archaeological site that has been given protection against unauthorised change. Dover Castle is also a Grade I listed building, and recognised as an internationally important structure. The Dover Castle , secret tunnels, and surrounding land are now owned by English Heritage and the site is a major tourist attraction. The Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports is officially head of the castle, in his conjoint position of Constable of Dover Castle, and the Deputy Constable has his residence in Constable's Gate. The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment Museum is located in the Dover Castle.

Dover Backpackers Hostel, Dover, England
Tour of the Dover Backpackers Hostel in Dover, England. Most travellers will do Dover as a day trip in and out from London on the many daily trains. If you happen to be making a stop in dover to hike the white cliffs, wander the castle, or take a ferry to or from Calais the Dover Backpackers is there to offer a cheap bed and a cold pint. The rooms were a bit dirty but think they get cleaned a few times a week. When i was there in mid-november it was pretty quiet with just one other person in the 6 bed dorm. Rooms were £15 and a basic breakfast was included. there is no typical reception desk and you check in at the bar so make sure you arrive during pub hours or make prior arrangements. Easy walking distance from bus stop, train station, and dover castle.

UK: QUEEN MOTHER VISITS DOVER
English/Nat
XFA
The Queen Mother has been flown into Dover by helicopter to receive a special gift, three weeks before her 100th birthday.
She arrived to receive birthday wishes and a scroll from the Confederation of Cinque Ports.
The helicopter touched down at The Duke of York's Military School where the school's band played Happy Birthday.
Few centenarians have the chance or perhaps the inclination to travel by helicopter, but for the Queen Mother this is not an unusual way of getting about.
With her birthday now exactly three weeks away, students from Dover's Royal Military school made sure the official welcome had a celebratory tone.
In the centre of town hundreds of people were waiting to see her.
The Queen Mother comes here each year in her role as Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports -- an ancient confederation of local towns.
And this year all the mayors were there to greet her and present her with a scroll to mark not only her birthday but her long tenure as Lord Warden.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
She is held in such affection by the people of the Cinque Ports for all that she does.
SUPER CAPTION: Vox Pop
But for some it is more than that it - it's the Queen Mother's strong character that's won their admiration.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I think she has been a right moo (?) but, I do, and good for her. Every mother should be head of the family.
SUPER CAPTION: Vox Pop
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I think she is well respected throughout the country and all over the world as well.
SUPER CAPTION: Vox Pop
The Queen Mother will be staying here over the weekend before returning to London for more birthday celebrations.
