Mussenden Temple, Downhill
This is a rough edit from some footage taken around the beautiful Mussenden Temple in September 2016. Mussenden Temple is a small circular building located on cliffs near Castlerock in County Londonderry, high above the Atlantic Ocean on the north-western coast of Northern Ireland. It was built in 1785 and forms part of the Downhill Demesne. The demesne was formerly part of the estate of Frederick, 4th Earl of Bristol, who served as the Church of Ireland Lord Bishop of Derry from 1768 until 1803. It was Lord Bristol - popularly known as 'the Earl-Bishop' - who had the 'temple' built. Constructed as a library and modelled from the Temple of Vesta in the Forum Romanum in Rome, it is dedicated to the memory of Bishop Lord Bristol's cousin Frideswide Mussenden. Over the years the erosion of the cliff face at Downhill has brought Mussenden Temple ever closer to the edge, and in 1997 The National Trust carried out cliff stabilisation work to prevent the loss of the building. Castlerock to Mussenden Temple Coastal Walk
We are at Castlerock Co Antrim up on Northern Ireland's north Atlantic coast. Our family group walk is from the excellent Haye's caravan park, to the magnificent Mussendon Temple perched on the clifftop.
This was not a long walk but you dropped down into a valley and then climbed a series of steps back up the other side. I found this a bit challenging because of my bad hip. Holding a video camera in one hand as I tried to keep my balance did not help! The reward was reaching Mussendon Temple, ( actually the Bishop of Londonderry's library ) and the spectacular views and wonderful bird life to be seen along the way.
Mussenden Temple is located in the beautiful surroundings of Downhill Demesne near Castlerock in County Londonderry. It perches dramatically on a 120 ft cliff top, high above the Atlantic Ocean on the north-western coast of Northern Ireland, offering spectacular views westwards over Downhill Strand towards Magilligan Point and County Donegal and to the east Castlerock beach towards Portstewart, Portrush and Fair Head.
History of Mussenden Temple
The temple was built in 1785 and forms part of the estate of Frederick Augustus Hervey, Bishop of Derry and Earl of Bristol (or the Earl Bishop). The temple was built as a summer library and its architecture was inspired by the Temple of Vesta in Tivoli, near Rome. It is dedicated to the memory of Hervey's cousin Frideswide Mussenden.
Both the Temple and the surrounding views are among the most photographed scenes in Ireland. Over the years the Temple itself was under danger of being lost to the sea due to the erosion of the cliff which brought Mussenden Temple ever closer to the edge. In 1997 the National Trust then carried out cliff stabilisation work to prevent the loss of this lovely building.

En fait, il s'agit d'un tronçon de plage qui s'étend sur 11 km dont font également partie les plages de Benone ( et Magilligan. Ces plages sont certifiées Pavillon Bleu.
Derrière cette plage se trouve le Tunnel Brae qui a été érigé dans la falaise pour permettre le passage des trains. D'ailleurs, il existe un belvédère d'où l'on peut apercevoir ce fameux tunnel ((
Lors de notre passage, il pleuvait abondamment. Alors, la vidéo ne rend pas vraiment justice à la beauté de cette plage qui s'avère exceptionnelle en période de beau temps.
Cette plage a été un lieu de tournage pour la série Game of Thrones. Dans cette série, le lieu est désigné comme étant Dragonstone. C'est à cet endroit que les Sept Idoles de Westeros ont été brûlées par la prêtresse rouge Mélisandre.

Queen Elizabeth visits the North Coast on her 90th anniversary tour in a vintage steam train. The train came along the line from Portrush to Coleraine, Castlerock, then Downhill in front of the Downhill Beachhouse.

Highest tides in Downhill
I have lived in Downhill since 1997 and never seen waves come more than a metre past the stone built pillars that support the train bridge which create the entrance onto the Downhill Beach. This was what we saw on the way to school this morning at about 8:38, high tide.

Natasha and I were on our way to Mussenden Temple by bus but we missed our stop (mostly because we had no idea where to get off). We ended up at the bottom of the cliff near Downhill, NI. Since we were there, we stopped at the beach and took a little stroll. You can see the Temple on top of the nearby cliff - and yes, we climbed all the way back up there. The wind was crazy this day; the sea was pretty rough because of it. We had great timing. The tide came in after we made it to the Temple!
