UK PM leaves Downing Street for US trip
(26 Jan 2017) British Prime Minister Theresa May left 10 Downing Street on Thursday morning, heading to Washington to become the first foreign leader to meet US President Donald Trump.
May's staff worked feverishly to secure the two-day trip, which includes a meeting with the president at the White House on Friday.
British officials hope it will help cement the UK's place as a pre-eminent American ally and provide proof of what Britons - more often than Americans - call the trans-Atlantic special relationship.
But May faces the challenge of persuading a president who has vowed to put America first of the benefits of free trade with Britain and the vital role of the 28-nation NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) military alliance.
And she must build a working relationship with a populist president whose protectionist outlook and loose way with facts have alarmed many European politicians, including some of May's own allies.
May insists she's up to the task of being America's steadfast, but plain-speaking friend, telling British lawmakers on Wednesday that she was not afraid to speak frankly to a president of the United States.
In a speech to Republican legislators in Philadelphia on Thursday, May plans to say the trans-Atlantic relationship made the modern world and built the institutions that have underpinned the global order since the end of World War II.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson welcomed US Vice President Mike Pence to 10 Downing Street in London on Thursday.
Media reports indicate that Pence reiterated his governments support for Johnson's efforts to deliver Brexit and expressed his governments keenness to negotiate a trade deal with the UK.
Johnsons meeting with Pence comes shortly after meeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who came to London for a snap visit.
Johnson's meetings are taking place two days after his loss of his parliamentary majority, when UK MPs voted to take control of parliamentary business to pass legislation aimed at preventing a no-deal Brexit against his wishes.

Larry the Downing Street cat’s best moments
THE most famous feline in Downing Street, who now has Boris Johnson as his new flatmate, is Larry the Cat.
Larry the Cat took up his position as Chief Mouser of Number 10 Downing Street in February 2011 - a year after the Camerons moved in.
The 12 year old tabby is the first cat at No10 to be given the official title of Chief Mouser.
As such, his day-to-day duties include finding a solution to the mouse occupancy of the house.
Larry says this is still in tactical planning stage, despite being in the job for over eight years.

Britain PM Johnson Meets Egypt's President El Sissi at 10 Downing Street in London
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi, at 10 Downing Street Tuesday, January 21.
—————————
READ MORE: Sissi, the Chairperson of the African Union, was in London to attend Britain’s investment summit for African leaders in London Monday.
Johnson vowed to invite African leaders to the Britain regularly after the investment summit. He said Britain will put “people before passports” as he pledged a fairer migration system.
Britain wants to strike trade new deals with fast-growing economies in Africa and beyond after it officially leaves the European Union on January 31. Prime Minister Johnson wooed African leaders with his now familiar message: Britain is going global after Brexit.
More than half the world's fastest, 15 fastest growing economies are in Africa,” Johnson told delegates at the conference. “Two-thirds of African economies are expanding faster than the global average. Africa is the future and the UK has a huge and active role to play in that future.”
Britain has some catching up to do. Annual two-way trade with Africa is around $46 billion, less than a quarter that of China, the continent’s biggest trading partner. Prime Minister Johnson acknowledged the competition. (VOA/AP)

UK: LONDON: NETANYAHU ARRIVES AT 10 DOWNING STREET UPDATE
English/Nat
The Israelis say a breakthrough is unlikely as Middle East peace talks in London drag into a second, unscheduled day.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met British Premier Tony Blair on Tuesday morning following the meeting Netahyahu said he was committed to furthering the peace process.
But Netanyahu's spokesman is pessimistic of any real progress before the London talks break up.
The Israeli leader began the day seeing British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who is playing a supporting role in trying to end a 14-month stalemate in negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.
As he left Netanyahu was noncommittal about the chances of a breakthrough.
UPSOUND:
We're working on it.
Q: Is there any chance of any movement in Israel's position on the land issue today?
A:We're working to move the process forward. Everyone's committed to doing that, moving forward.
SUPER CAPTION: Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli Prime Minister
Later, however, Netanyahu's spokesman spelt it out: a settlement today was unlikely.
SOUNDBITE:
We've been warning throughout that one should not expect a dramatic breakthrough here nor the collapse of the talks. They'll probably continue. We are dealing with very important, very difficult and very sensitive issues. So it will take time and there will be many impasses like this one which will probably be resolved in the near future.
SUPER CAPTION: David Bar-Illan, senior adviser to Netanyahu
Further meetings are scheduled throughout the day, with U-S Secretary of State Madeleine Albright playing the key role of mediator between the Israelis and Palestinians.

UK: LONDON: JOHN MAJOR MOVES OUT OF 10 DOWNING STREET
English/Nat
As Britain wakes to a new Labour Government, removalists are already at Number 10 Downing Street - the official Prime Minister's residence in London.
By Friday morning Britain's new Prime Minister Tony Blair will be inside, ready to start a new Government.
Out with the old - in with the new.
The police on the door of Number 10 Downing Street might be the same but everything else in Britain has changed overnight.
Dawn had barely risen above the rooftops of the official Prime Minister's residence before removalists came in to make way for Britain's new Prime Minister, Tony Blair.
Around the back a large truck waited to be filled with John Major's belongings.
Mr Major has been Prime Minister since he toppled Margaret Thatcher in a leadership contest in 1991 and subsequently won the general election the following year.
They share something in common however.
Both used the same removal firm.
By midday Friday, Downing Street will have a new occupant - Labour leader Tony Blair, elected Prime Minister in a Labour landslide.
